Hold the Phone, Grab the Book!

I'm a "closet" introvert, which means I can interact well with others, even getting on stage or teaching isn't a problem for me, but I often prefer isolation and have to work at being outgoing in group settings. I have to say much in this book resonated with me right off the bat. Especially one part about feeling like every phone call seeming to be like an interruption. That sounds exactly like me!

In Confident You, Steve and Rebecca help you identify which of 8 different introverted personalities you may have... then showcase 15 different challenges you likely experience based on your introverted personality. But they don't stop there. For each challenge you get specific, actionable advice in an easy, short read to help you master those areas of your life.

What I really appreciate most about this book is the authors don't try to change you. Instead, they take who you are and help you make the most of your existing personality. Every introvert can benefit from a read of this work!

A PROVEN SYSTEM FOR SUCCEEDING AS AN INTROVERT!

I've read most books by Steve Scott, especially the Habit books, mostly because I love the topic of habits. But this book was different. As an introvert struggling in a world that values online relationships, joining groups, and staying active to maintain popularity, I find myself time and again constantly struggling to keep up with looking like I'm "social". "Confident You" is the book I had to read; as I started to skim the first few pages, it became a necessity. If you are an introvert like I am [and Steve Scott, an introvert? Had no idea] then this is the book you need to read. Forget about being entertained; this book will change the way you feel about YOU.

It was such a relief to be told from the very beginning that is okay to be an introvert; and that the aim of the authors is not to change you, but to help us introverts to adapt and function with confidence in a world that praises and rewards extroverts. Scott and Livermore also state that "You can't magically transform into an extrovert since introversion is part of your makeup. Introversion isn't a type of illness you need to be cured from." That's great to know.

In reading this book, it is obvious that Steven and Rebecca, in addition to drawing on their own emotions and experience of being introverts, did the deep research to cover the topic in depth. As I was reading this I found myself shaking my head saying, "Yes, that is exactly it." or "They just described how I feel 90% of the time."

The book is organized in a very clear, easy-to-follow format where the authors describe the challenge faced by introverts, and then they provide the solution to it. The result is a book with very clear steps that defines the problem, and then presents the solution. I believe that all introverts, or people who struggle with insecurity, social problems, or shyness will gain a tremendous amount of help by reading this. You can apply the action steps right away and come away with some great results and lasting change.

Written for directors, brilliant for writers

While Mark Travis's book is written for directors, it's an unsurpassed tool for screenwriters as well. It's a wonderful glimpse into the mind of a director, literally revealing the tricks directors use to communicate with-- and even "manipulate"-- writers and performers. As a tool for writers, it not only clues you in on what directors are thinking, what they need from scenes and performers, etc. but it's a straightforward director-writer dictionary. Thus, you can not only help make your communications director-proof... but you can make your scripts director-proof as well. By approaching and rewriting with the eye of a director, you'll not only make the story and the writing stronger, you'll ensure you tell the story YOU want to tell... not a story vulnerable to tweaking and twisting by others down the road.

This is a "Must Have" book!

This was such a well written book with amazingly logical insights. I own (and have read) many books on the subject of Directing. I occasionally find myself "in mental arguments" with advice being given for working with actors, but Mr. Travis clearly has a very long background working with talent. His suggestions are now in my own "Bag Of Tricks!"

Extraordinary!

This is insightful, useful, and well written. If you have any interest in making movies , this is a remarkable piece of work. The title makes it sound more trivial than it is. More accurately it could be called Film Directing Techniques, but I doubt that would sell many copies. As how-to books go, this is one of the best I've ever read.

A Q&A with Sarah Kay

Question: How old were you when you started writing poetry?

Sarah Kay: I’ve been making poems since I could string words together. Before I knew how to write, I used to follow my mother around the house and yell, "Poem!" until she found a pen and paper to write down my dictation. I think that’s why she taught me how to write early on, so I would stop making her do it for me.

Question: Are your parents poets? Did they influence your interest in poetry?

Sarah Kay: From kindergarten through fourth grade I brought my lunch to school with me every day. And every day for those five years, one of my parents wrote me a poem and tucked it in my lunchbox. It was usually on a colored piece of paper, folded in half. They were short poems that were sort of Dr. Seuss-y or Shel Silverstein-esque. They made poetry something to look forward to. Each note was a story, a message, a secret, a rhyme; each note made me stop whatever I was doing and surrender to the surprise inside. I don’t think either one of them considers themselves poets, but they definitely gave me a hunger (wink!) for poetry.

Question: Did you always perform your poetry?

Sarah Kay: Absolutely not. All of my early poetry was strictly journal poetry. I had terrible stage fright and never wanted to be in the spotlight. It wasn’t until I was 14 that I discovered Spoken Word Poetry at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City. I was adopted by a wonderful community of poets and even though my stage fright didn’t disappear, the reward of being part of such an amazing group of people was enough to drown out the fear.

Question: What did your mother say when she first heard your poem, "B"?

Sarah Kay: I had a really hard time writing that poem. When I finally finished it, I called my mother on the phone from my freshman dorm at college and read the entire thing to her. I was really emotional by the end of it. When I finished the last line, I waited to hear what she would say. After a long pause she said, "That’s nice, Missy. Can you read me the beginning again? I think I heard a grammatical error." That’s why I love her. She’s very practical.

Question: What’s the coolest thing that’s ever happened to you on stage?

Sarah Kay: I travel around the country performing and teaching Spoken Word Poetry in schools with Phil Kaye and Project V.O.I.C.E. It’s exhausting and exhilarating, and I count my blessings every day that I get to do what I do. A lot of really cool things happen on stage. The coolest? A couple of years ago we performed at a middle school in Southern California. It was the first time we had ever performed there and it was the first time anyone in the school had ever seen Spoken Word. We were nervous about it, because it was a pretty conservative school, but everyone really enjoyed themselves. The next year, we were invited back to the same school. Halfway through our performance, we asked if anybody in the audience had a poem they wanted to share and a little boy came bolting up onto the stage. He didn’t even raise his hand. When he got up there he said, "I wrote this poem the day after you left last year. I’ve been waiting all year for a chance to perform it for you." That was the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me on stage. Second place would probably be getting a standing ovation at the TED conference. Although at the time I didn’t think it was cool. I was just freaking out. I was worried that the audience was clapping for too long and was terrified that they were taking up too much time. TED is very strict about time limits. I was convinced I would be pulled off stage.

Question: Who is Sophia Janowitz? And why illustrations?

Sarah Kay: Sophia Janowitz is my oldest friend. When we were three months old, we had our first playdate in the park in our neighborhood. We’ve been friends ever since. When we were little, we used to make art projects together. I would tell Sophia stories and Sophia would make amazing art out of whatever random material was around. When we graduated college, we moved into an apartment together in Brooklyn and returned to our childhood practice of project-making. When I decided to make "B" into a book, I wanted it to be more than just a transcript of the poem. I really wanted it to be its own object, with its own personality. I knew Sophia was the woman for the job. Thank goodness she said yes.

Question: Last question. What color rain boots do you have?

Sarah Kay: My last pair was black with white polka dots. My mother found them for me at one of the stores at Union Square in New York City. But they have sprung a few leaks. Maybe I need a new pair.

About the Author
Born and raised in New York, Sarah Kay is an alum of Brown University where she received a Master's degree in the Art of Teaching Secondary English. After co-founding Project V.O.I.C.E. in high school and becoming the youngest poet to compete at the National Poetry Slam in 2006, Kay went on to become a featured poet at events and venues such as HBO's Def Poetry Jam, the Lincoln Center, the Tribeca Film Festival, and the United Nations. This culminated into Kay receiving a standing ovation at the TED 2011 Conference where she performed B. An education advocate and keynote speaker for educational organizations such as NAIS, ECIS, AISA, NBTA, and IBO, Kay continues to perform her spoken word poetry to a wide array of audiences spanning several continents.

I am a huge fan of Sarah Kay. She is a beautiful poet, she is amazing with words and just touches my heart. I love listening to her and reading her poems to my campers. My campers definitely know how much I love this poem and I am so happy to have a copy of it. This poem has always been one of my favorites, but i am so happy I own a hard copy of it now. I officially do not have to look up the words online to read it for chapel to my lovely ladies. They definitely enjoy it and the illustrations are awesome. I am very happy to have bought this book and it is definitely worth the buy. I would buy it again if I loss this one (knock on wood I don't lose it). If you have not read this yet, please do, you will absolutely love it. I love her incredibly and would love to see her live. She is amazing and I actually saw her on ted talks. Ted talks are awesome and Sarah Kay should get 83789473208 awards for being so stinking awesome. Love love love love love her! Buy this book and you will not be disappointed. The book is a bit small though. It is about the size of your hand completely spread out. even though it is small, I am very pleased. Thank you sarah kay for being amazing.

Inspiration from Parent to Daughter

Great words which are inspirational for a kid. The pictures are lacking for a child, as there is no color.

I first heard this poem performed quite awhile ago. I was just starting to listen to spoken word poetry through the IndieFeed: Performance Poetry podcast, and from that I was searching youtube for various poets and videos. I came across Sarah Kay and fell in love with what I heard.

The performance I listened to was from the TED conference, referenced in the description. It became one of my favorite poems to listen to. This is why I was happy to find out that the poem was available in print. I hadn't read a spoken word poem before. I didn't know what to expect. Would the emotions, the power, or the essence Sarah Kay brought to this poem through speaking it out translate to the page and move me? Well it did.

I'm one to enjoy seeing words on a page. I like to see how they are placed on that page; how the poet wishes his or her words to be visualized on the page. For B, there may not be many lines and there may not be many words, but B holds the beauty Kay's performance in how it's presented. There are illustrations to go along with the text and I think that makes the experience that much better.

The reader is able to slowly soak in the poem over roughly 50 pages, when a less creative and resourceful poet may only have used 2 or 3 pages for a poem the same length. At first I had at hard time justifying paying for one poem that I knew only takes the poet a few minutes to read, but I'm glad I didn't let that stop me from trying it out.

I'm happy to have B and Sarah Kay on my shelf. This has become one of my favorite books of poetry. I'm happy to have it in my collection.
