About the Author
John Coburn grew up in the Hawaiian Islands, the seventh of sixteen children. He received his Associate of Arts degree in 1977 from Windward Community College, where he graduated with honors. In 1979 he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Hawaii. After being lured into the business world for five years, he returned to his first love, accepting a teaching position in high school mathematics where he was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1987. Soon afterward, the decision was made to seek a Masters Degree, which he received two years later from the University of Oklahoma. For the last fifteen years, he has been teaching mathematics at the Florissant Valley campus of St. Louis Community College, where he is now a full professor. During his tenure there he has received numerous nominations as an outstanding teacher by the local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, two nominations to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and was recognized as Teacher of the year in 2004 by the Mathematics Educators of Greater St. Louis (MEGSL). He has made numerous presentations and local, state and national conferences on a wide variety of topics. His other loves include his family, music, athletics, games and all things beautiful, and hopes this love of life comes through in his writing, and serves to make the learning experience an interesting and engaging one for all students.

Skips logical steps

I'm writing this review as an adjunct professor who got stuck teaching Precalculus (with little formal training). My knowledge of Precalculus is quite dated, as a result, I've been forced to relearn this material in order to teach it. I think that this background puts me in a great place to review a math text. I can decipher the material with some work each lesson. That's fine, as it usually helps me understand it better. However, this book's examples are not always step by step. They often skip a logical step and leave the reader to figure out what it is that they did. Perhaps that's how some people like their textbooks, or people with a Math degree may not even notice. However, as a person who must use the book and only the book to figure out the math, it can be quite painful to try and make the connections that the authors left out.

I will say that the book seems to be comprehensive and covers most of the information I need. I can not however, recommend this book to a student who is trying to learn the information without the aid of a professor who can bridge for them, the gaps in logic.

Ten years later still worth the reading. An excellent complement to the sustainable urban transport discussion

The book was written by a highly reputed scholar, one of the few in the academic world who has managed to master the inner workings and the complex interrelationships of both urban transport and land use. Unfortunately in the real world these two dimensions of our modern mobility problem are dealt with separately. Even though the book's main audiences are academics, graduate students and practitioners, the good writing style and the limited use of technical jargon make the book accessible to the general public. I read this book ten years ago and decided to revisit it in light of the renewed interest in sustainable transport and clear energy fueled by the recent peak in oil prices and climate change concerns, as some of the old ideas and lessons are reemerging. Undoubtedly still worth the reading.

Part One presents the conceptual framework for the transit metropolis as a paradigm for sustainable regional development. The first chapters present a concise discussion of all the negative impacts deriving from the automobile-center society and its sister, urban sprawl, and how they have resulted in the ever weakening of public transportation, particularly in the US. He briefly discusses the myriad of negative impacts resulting from this auto-dependent model, including traffic congestion, traffic accidents, air pollution, energy consumption and oil dependency, social equity, and other environmental impacts, including climate change, already a concern circa 1997.

The book makes quite a convincing case for the lack of sustainability of the auto-centric culture. Despite the greatly appreciated benefits of personal mobility freedom, he shows that the main problem with automobile travel is that it is often grossly underpriced, producing ever growing auto use and becoming an additional incentive for more urban sprawl, spiraling in a vicious circle than deepens the world in its oil dependency and the other negative impacts. He recognizes that underpriced car use is a concept grasped only by academics, transportation economists, engineers and planners, and a cadre of environmentalists, but the strategies to set the price right, such as congestion pricing and variable parking pricing, are highly resisted by the public, and feared by most politicians, as they think that embracing road pricing is political suicide and staying in office is their chief priority. As a lively example, just check out the latest decisions by London's new mayor, Ben Johnson, who is slowly dismantling the now renowned 2003 London congestion charge. First he scraped the pollution charges that were going into effect in October 2008 for high polluting vehicles, and now he will pull back the 2007 western extension by 2010.

Cervero's central thesis is that mass transit when harmonically integrated to the urban form is a sustainable solution for our car-dependent world. And to illustrate his thesis, he presents a dozen cases of islands of excellence located throughout the world, where the marriage between transport and land use has worked in the long term. The Second part presents these successful cases: Stockholm, Copenhagen, Singapore, Tokyo, Munich, Ottawa, Curitiba, Z�rich, Melbourne, Karlsruhe, Adelaide, and Mexico City. These chapters illustrate practical solutions to the chicken-and-egg dilemma between transport and land use. I particularly found very instructive the remarkable cases of Stockholm, Curitiba (Brazil), and Singapore. A common element in all of them is political vision and will, and integrated transportation and land use planning for the long term. Because this is quite a voluminous book (460+ pages), I recommend you read Part One and they go hopping from case to case, beginning with the three cases above mentioned.

Though published some 10 years ago, the book is not outdated yet, and it is only missing the new congestion pricing schemes that recently were implemented in London, Stockholm, and Milan. Also missing is the global embrace of Curitiba's transit model, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), now implemented throughout Brazil and in several countries, including the US and China, and recently upgraded to the next level by TransMilenio, in Bogota, Colombia. Anyway, there are few textbooks available today discussing these recent developments, particularly congestion pricing, and only mentioned briefly in recent publications. For the time being, you might find reasonable summaries on the existing and proposed congestion pricing schemes at Wikipedia.

I highly recommend Cervero's book for those interested in urban transport sustainability. For a book covering the complementary part of the sustainability equation, clean fuels and alternative and advanced fuel vehicles, I recommend the recently published Two Billion Cars: Driving Toward Sustainability, a book dealing very comprehensively with the analysis and mid to long term policies, technologies and expectations regarding conventional oil, low-carbon fuels and alternative fuel vehicles, particularly hybrids, electric and fuel cell vehicles using hydrogen. This book is also very helpful to understand why the US was left behind by Europe and other countries in terms of transport sustainability and more efficient and clean vehicle technology.

Tough slog to read

This was assigned to me in a Urban Transportation class in the Geography Department at a university. The teacher thought it was wonderful, but the rest of the class hated it. Too dry, too dense, very boring. I object to the author's thesis of buses being the solution to transportation problems. The author loved buses, the teacher loved buses. I hate buses. I believe the solution is intra-urban railways and additional elevated freeways for cars. I am old-fashioned enough to believe cars are solution to getting around until someone invents the flying car. No buses. The prose is bureaucratic, academic and a tough slog to get through. And the fact that a bunch of undergraduate geography majors hated it (not just me) shows some evidence of it not being a successful book.

Landmark work, summative of its time

In writing the Transit Metropolis, Robert Cervero did a great job of stating and providing examples for the proposition that transit, land use and urban planning must be coordinated and share the same goals in order to be successful. The definition of success is a publicly accessible (as distinct from publicly owned), useful, and integrated transit system that both is a response to and a determinant of the built environment.
After laying out his proposition, he provides a rich set of examples; case studies from cities around the world where a successful transit metropolis has emerged, either through a transit system adapted to its environment, a built environment adapted to its transit system, or by adaptations of both transit and the environment. He also takes as separate examples of success those metropolises where a strong central core city has been both the focus of transit development and the benefactor of transit as a factor in the center city's revitalization.
The book is optimistic about the future of transit metropolises built on the basis of careful planning as desirable, attractive places to live, even though they imply higher population densities than most of us in the US associate with gracious living. Follow the plan, have patience and visionary leadership, and the future need not be degraded by slavish reliance on the automobile.
It is now 12 years since the book's publication. In that time, the world of the new millennium has unfolded as no one expected in 1998. Public suspicion of planning and political institutions, especially land use planning, is much stronger than it was two presidential administrations ago. Economic slowing has left most governmental bodies with crushing debt instead of developmental funding. Though this may impact the further development of automobile facilities, it has a particular impact on the kind of comprehensive regional planning the author sees as a critical component of success. It's unclear whether cities, at least here in the US, presently have the political will to act on such a scale in the absence of an immediate crisis. Still, the book provides a clear set of guidelines for implementing an integrated transit metropolis, based on detailed analysis of successes from around the world. It's still worth reading.

Check out some other books first.

It is not as easy to read as the description would have you believe. There are some equations an a lot of schematic diagrams that take an engineering degree to decipher, or at least a decent understanding of pneumatic diagramming. You do get instruction, but I would rather see the part being discussed as well as the diagram as it shows on the cover. That's not so much the case between the covers. This is the impression of someone familiar with electronic diagrams, but hasn't worked with pneumatics before.

Dianetics 55

In my life time of 40 plus, I have spent 19 of it in schooling. I have attended 3 major universities and have read a lot about many subjects, but I have to confess that my enlightenment came toward the end of my formal education when I discovered the works of L. Ron Hubbard. I learned about a lot of things when I was in and out of college, but mostly in general sense that had very little aplicability. Hubbard's very straight forward and common sense approach raises one's eye brows with a new level of understanding of truth. I picked up this book 3 summers ago and went to the beach for a weekend. I received a sever sun burn from the 2 days I spent reading this book under the sun. I could not put it down once I began reading it. If you ever had trouble communicating to either make yourself understood or understanding someone else, you should read this book. If you want to know when and how we begin reading into a situation and with all it's potential how we actively make it work against us instead of for us, read this book. Learn about the fundamentals of the most essential part of our daily living which is to communicate properly. But remember, I did not say you had to be incredibly intelligent, but you have to care and be willing to learn what works. You will agree with what you read

Very enlightening and useful knowledge for everybody

In short I can only say that after reading this book I have understood things and changed conditions in my life in areas that I never dreamed was possible. It has to do with very basic principles in life and existence - I am sure it will touch some basic issues in everybody - if they dare to look at themselves and their surroundings.

A Powerful Tool

I decided I ought to write a review to let people know a) this is a great book, and b) they really ought to read Fundamentals of Thought first. But I see that another reviewer has already pointed that out.

What I WOULD like to stress is that this is a book that puts a very powerful tool in the hands of anyone who is honest enough to use it without having some other axe to grind. The communication principles outlined by Mr. Hubbard can be used (easily!) to analyze and improve every area your life, and to remedy many common problems.

Are there areas in which you are waiting anxiously for someone else to communicate something or to do something you want? Are you hoping for some sort of acknowledgement that you're not likely to get? Do you have unanswered letters around, or things you've wanted to do or agreed to do but haven't yet found time for? Is there someone around who keeps talking to you or directing some other communication your way, and it's driving you nuts? Are there people around you who just don't seem to listen?

If the answer to any of these questions is "yes" (and this is not by any means a complete list--I just took these off the top of my head), or if you're having any OTHER kind of problem in life, YOU NEED TO READ AND APPLY THIS BOOK.

About the Author
A life-long martial artist and bibliophile, Ben "Casper" Bradak has been focusing on the martial arts of medieval/Renaissance Europe for about 10 years. He functioned as a senior instructor in the Association for Renaissance Martial Arts and developed its historical unarmed combatives curricula. He has been instructing in the martial arts for about 16 years; consulted for both film and print; authored articles; run regular classes, seminars, and workshops on both traditional European combative methods and modern self-defense; and instructed combatives to the U.S. Army. Brandon Heslop has been dabbling in the martial arts for the last couple of decades but has solely focused on the Renaissance martial arts since he discovered them eight years ago. In his training in the European sword, he focuses primarily on the longsword, but he has an abiding interest in sword and buckler, dagger, and spear as well. Along with Ben Bradak, he cofounded of the Dragons Tail School of Defense.

At the risk of drawing criticism from the authors, I feel potential readers should know where this book fails to live up to its claims. The book says that it contains a "Full transcription and translations of the three texts" but this is misleading. The authors have not transcribed these texts, they have used transcriptions from previous published sources. Those sources have their own problems and are unsafe starting points for a detailed re-construction. MS Harley is copied, with silent alterations, from the 1901 edition prepared by Alfred Hutton. The transcription of MS Additional is from Russ Mitchell and it is incomplete (those who own the book may have noticed that the 'J Ledall' which gives Additional its common name, does not actually appear in the transcription. That attribution, and three more of the lessons, are missing from Mitchell's transcription which he made from low resolution photocopies made from microfilm). The text from Cotton Titus is more reliable, having come from a PhD student's transcription of the original manuscript in 2003 but it's not perfect and the authors falsely state that the manuscript is in Corpus Christi College Cambridge. The authors have not seen the manuscripts themselves, so they can't be sure that their source texts are accurate, which further undermines the quality of the 'translations.' Those translations are made with very little support from other linguistic sources, and this is extra troubling because many of the terms in these texts only appear, in these texts, in this particular context. For example, the OED definition for a 'hauk' as a type of blow, is based entirely on the appearance of the word in Harley. You can't use your own source as its own definition.

There are other misstatements in fact, perhaps superficial, but still indicative of a lack of care on the part of the authors. George Silver is incorrectly described as a member of the London Masters of Defence (p. 21, note #8). For some reason the photo credits appear to be the BL license numbers instead of the titles and pages of the reproduced works.There is more, but readers may think I'm being pedantic. Although readers of this book should wonder how exactly the authors manage to turn what appear to be one-sided instructions into sequences for an active and patient agent. There are far too many assumptions at work, and often undeclared, in the reconstructions.

If one ignores the tenuous historical basis for the conclusions, the demonstrations and descriptions of the system are clear and intuitive. Readers should have little trouble following the instructions in the system. Heslop and Bradak have certainly spent a great deal of time and effort in building a style that they believe contains a particular 'English' spirit. However, it remains to be proven that this system actually represents the constant of the three manuscripts at the centre of this book.

For readers interested only in the mechanics of a slightly different system of long-sword and staff combat, then this book will please you. If you have any serious interest in the historical roots of these systems, or the peculiar English texts of martial instruction, this book is too problematic a source for anything other than as an example of what not to do with manuscripts.

Sword lovers

I bought this book for my husband who is seriously into swords and fencing. I thought it would be a great book to broaden his knowledge base from traditional German and Italian fencing styles. My husband loved it. He said it was well laid out and easy to follow. Plus, it had great visual aids in it. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is into fencing and wants to learn more about it.

Extremely well written book!!!

As a novice to sword fighting or most combative arts I found the book to be extremely informative. In the first chapter of the book named Breaking the Code, one of the things that stuck with me throughout reading it is that the applications used were tested with martial practicality. Being a person who has been raised with martial arts surrounding me daily as a child and one who practices it now, I felt this was a strong point in the authors favor. Chapter 1 to 3 of the book is excellent for those who have never picked up a sword before or has no prior training. The detail given throughout these chapters were very easy to follow and the visual pictures help the reader immensely. Stances and foot maneuvers are one of the hardest aspects for any beginner to understand with any type of martial arts. I was very pleased to see the visual pictures that clearly show the type of stance that would be needed for a strong base, with a detailed explanation given where the feet are in alignment to the body, and why this stance is important when fighting. There are many more aspects of the book I could list such as the full explanations of the three texts, Manuscript 39564, Cottonian Titus A XXV, And Harleian MS 3542 with detailed insights and the visual techniques shown. Since I am unfamiliar with the background of sword fighting, I will not say much about that aspect, but to me it looks like the book is very comprehensive and gives detailed instructions of how to strike an opponent and why these strikes are effective. It is obvious to anyone that reads this book that the authors are dedicated and passionate about this subject. It is evident that they are life long students and masters of combative martial arts. I would recommend this book as a must read for those who have a desire and passion to learn another avenue of combative arts or if you are just interested in sword fighting. An amazing read.

Many dishes are familiar versions of Southern and Cajun-Creole cuisine, but enough lie sufficiently off the well-beaten path to offer a sense of freshness and discovery. Where necessary, American substitutes for African ingredients and implements are provided. Recipes for chicken curry, fish soup or pickled green beans are not likely to quicken many American pulses, but Moroccan lamb sauced with butter, onions and raisins, Burkina Fasoan fish cooked with okra, hot peppers and sweet potato greens, Ghanian palm-nut soup, Tanzanian mango snow and Liberian plantain gingerbread make for enticing departures from daily fare. The cookbook was originally published privately by the Africa News, an educational news agency based in North Carolina. Illustrations.
