Black Ice is a thoughtful and poignant memoir

Beautifully written but

Beautifully written but, for this reader, ultimately unsatisfying, look at a black girl's years at a prestigious prep school in New Hampshire. Lorene Cary leaves a middle class life in Philadelphia in her HS sophomore year to attend St. Paul High School, circa 1972. While she feels some degree of "other-ness" she becomes amazingly assimilated into this world of prestige and money. She arrives wanting to "turn it out!" and, in the end, graduates with a respectable (if not stellar) academic career and winning the prestigious "Rector's Award." Along the way, she loses her virginity (in a most unromantic way), is challenged to study harder and learn more than she ever thought possible (Calculus remains her nemesis), deals with plebian summer jobs back in Phily. This reader was never sure if she "liked" St Paul's, or not. Her subsequent career brought her back to teach there and with all the detail she devotes to the various traditions, it would seem that she does. Leaving one to wonder: Did she sell out? Did she "drink the kool aid"? If so, is this okay? This reader was left wanting more and feeling somewhat cheated of the "real" story.

Good Subject for a Memoir, but Fails to Explore Deep Enough

I wanted to like this book. I really did. I had heard Lorene Cary speak at a conference, and she was incredibly inspiring. The way she spoke, she sounded like an amazing writer, and so I was excited to pick up this book, the first work by Cary that I have had a chance to read. It simply did not live up to my expectations.

Cary does do some great things with language in this memoir. Many descriptions are beautifully poetic, and the metaphor of black ice is one that will stick with me. But there were also many flaws in this book, the greatest being that I feel as though she did not do enough to let the reader in. Perhaps I expect more from memoirs, but one of the reasons I enjoy reading them so much is for the insights writers share when they look back on the experiences they choose to write about. Memoir can allow for great intimacy between writer and reader, and Cary just does not do that here. Perhaps distancing herself was intentional, but it was not a tactic that worked for me. She does a good job describing the black female experience in a world that was previously all-white, all-male, but I feel like she could have gone deeper, as far as how she personally felt about the particular aspects of her life that she chose to share. Coming-of-age stories are ones I naturally gravitate to, as there is so much emotion to explore in that adolescent experience, and in my opinion, Cary only skimmed the surface. She couldn't break through the black ice the book is named for, so the experiences she writes about seem a bit watered-down.

I also had a hard time keeping track of some of the characters. Many of her schoolmates in particular appeared so fleetingly, and weren't developed enough, so that I found myself paging backwards to remind myself who some of them were. Her family members were a bit more memorable, and I thought the stories about her grandparents were particularly of interest, but I would have liked to have known even more about her relationships with them. There were just too many missed opportunities, and so while this book is a quick read, and is valuable for the perspective of a young black female that Cary shares with us, in the end I can only rate this book as average.

The 2013 reprint is of poorer quality

The 2013 reprint is of poorer quality, printed in South Korea whilst the prior was printed in Japan. The photos are darker & more grainy & so its harder to see smaller detail like hand positions.
Excellent book, unfortunately the publishers have not done it justice.

Brilliant!!

Just what you would come to expect from one of the all time greats in Japanese Shotokan karate, a large (hard back) 240 page book packed with hundreds of small black & white detailed photos & explanations of all the 26 kata in the Shotokan canon.

Each move & many of the intermediate moves are explained in full detail under the pictures.

One nice little surprise for ALL Shotokan Karate-ka is a new (for me anyway - it's actually very old) kata called Koryu Gankaku or (Gankaku-Sho).

Each of the katas movements are highlighted with easy to read symbols to help you with speed, breathing & kime etc.

Bunkai (application of kata) is shown at the end of each kata as well as a glossary of karate terms.

Quite simply a great book to complete Kanazawa Sensei's bookshelf of books including: Black Belt Karate, Karate Fighting Techniques: The Complete Kumite, Karate My Life

At least in this book you may find all the Shotokan Kata in one place, whereas before you had to buy two books which are now becoming quite hard to get a hold of: Shotokan Karate International Kata: Volume 1 & Shotokan Karate International Kata: Volume 2

Great resource, but wait for the reprint.

I've used this book at the dojo where my family trains, and was looking to purchase a copy for home. This is a wonderful resource for Shotokan karateka, but the current prices listed by third party sellers here are extortion. The most recent printing appears to be sold out nearly everywhere, so if you absolutely, positively must have this book right now, you may be stuck with these ridiculous prices. However, I contacted the publisher about it because it is still listed on their website as a current product, and was told that a new printing has been authorized and is in the works. So, if you can be patient, you should be able to buy a copy in the near future for the list price.

In introducing his seventh hardcover story collection for Tor, Wolfe claims to be in readers' debt. But readers may politely quarrel with this, particularly since Wolfe's command of English makes even the shortest pieces (some short enough to be sent in Christmas cards) avoid slightness. "Calamity Warps" is an agreeable find in the highly felix-centric sf universe: a dog story, and not a shaggy one, either. "Graylord Man's Last Words" is very Dickensian (Wolfe is a Dickens aficionado) though set in the twenty-ninth century (Wolfe is an sf writer, after all). "Has Anybody Seen Junie Moon?" has the flavor of the late R. A. Lafferty (who? Wildside Press is reissuing his work, most recently his 1987 novel Serpent's Egg). "The Fat Magician" features one of Wolfe's ongoing characters, Sam Cooper. "Game in the Pope's Head" has a historical setting--the London of Jack the Ripper. Wolfe probably does demand serious--as in dedicated, not humorless--readers, and his success implies there are enough of them around. Roland Green

As always, an excellent collection!

Wolfe once again provides SF/fantasy stories that range from gentle to horrific to speculative and does a great job on all of them. One story, 'The Boy Who Hooked The Sun' concerns a boy who actually does have the sun on the end of a fishing line and wards off the rest of the villagers by flinging gemstones of Atlantis at them. A near perfect metaphor for this collection with Wolfe the writer merged with Apollo, flinging bright gemstones of stories at the reader. Finding stories like these will make you wealthy beyond your years, so go do it. Go read them. If it's your first encounter with the stories of Gene Wolfe, how I envy you!

Great Stuff

Gene Wolfe is the perfect short story author. His stories are accessible to fans of any genre, but will be especially rewarding to fans of fantasy, s f, or magical realism. The stories in this book, although supposedly "new science fiction stories" really fall into all three of the above categories. I also purchased Wolfe's other fairly recent collection, "Innocents Aboard" and found it to be excellent also. Each book features a good mix of very short (2-3 page) stories, and longer, not quite novella length stories.

Wolfe's settings are diverse, ranging from a far off desert planet to a short story set on the far future "Urth" of his Book of the New Sun Series, to places as seemingly mundane as Houston, TX, or the set of a present dayish reality tv show. Of course, Wolfe's stories are never mundane, and it is in taking a place that holds no magic and twisting our perceptions so that we come away with a sense of wonder that Wolfe really excells.

Short stories that hold my interest

I also own "Strange Travelers," a previous short story collection, and I thought it was very inconsistent. One story would be fascinating, the next would be ho-hum. I'm pleased to report that Starwater Strains is extremely consistent, and almost every story in this thick volume was a joy to read. The topics covered are all nominally "science fiction," but within this grouping Wolfe manages to cover a wide range of topics, and the tone of his stories run the gambit, from more classic-style hard, cold space science fiction, to dreamlike tales that could be set almost anywhere, at any point in history, the future, or the present. As is usually true with Wolfe, there are also tinges of horror throughout - not Steven King style gore, but subtle, horrifying little twists that will burrow into your mind and stay there, rising to the surface every so often, long after you're finished reading.

Many of his stories concern a speculative near future, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that several of these had a strong social or political message about our modern lives, always elegantly included so that without the message the story is still interesting if you don't agree with his stance or don't care for politics in your fiction.

I'll finish by saying that after I received this book for Christmas, I had several mornings at work where I could barely stay awake because I'd been up until 4am the night before, reading "just one more story" over and over again. It's a fine collection.

Wish I had had this book 20 years ago!

I have been providing continuing education to healthcare professionals for more than 20 years. I have invested hundreds of dollars on stacks of books and few have been as helpful as this book. This book gave me clear focus on writing my objectives, organizing my content, determining what media to use, and hitching all of that to my post-test questions.

I've spent most of my career married to Bloom's taxonomy, which Ruth Clark acknowledges and incorporate into her book. But she relies more heavily on the work of Gagne, which I found helpful. All of her recommendations are clear and practical. I could read a chapter and almost instantaneously implement what she was suggesting.

This book helped me to realize the things that I do successfully, and enabled me to do more of those things! It also helped me to do less of the stuff that wasn't useful.

Although the theoretical underpinnings are very clear, the book is not a theory book on instructional design. It is for the real-life teacher or trainer, with plenty of practical implications. The book is highly well-organized, and written with an easy-to-understand approach. Clark gives multiple examples, exercises to reinforce learning, and useful resources in each chapter.

There are only two things I might have wished for that this book did not provide. First, the book is indeed limited to technical training. Since I do continuing education, I often had to make the leap in my own mind between how to teach a task (which this book explains well) and how to manage a healthcare management issue, which is what I teach. But since the title of the book clearly says "technical training", I could not realistically expect it to address my particular concerns. Second, I would have wished for more examples of how to use media and practice exercises, but on the other hand, a thorough treatment of those issues is probably beyond the scope of the book.

Overall, this book is extremely helpful for the expert, but I would say it's not too difficult for the novice to grasp. If the reader cannot make the leap between technical training and professional education, it might be disappointing. Most teacher or trainers are likely to find reinforcement for what they're doing right, and guidance on how to dramatically improve their instructional design.

Recommended for Novice and Intermedicate Technical Training Developers

Overall, I would rate this as a very good purchase, but it is a bit outdated for its time. It was published quite a while ago. I would say it is a very good book if you are not that well versed on Technical Training development. There are some excellent flow charts and information that would help even the most savvy developers.
