About the Author

Sharon M. Ravitch, Ph.D. is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education where she is Research Co-Director at the Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives and a Founding Co-Director of Penn’s Inter-American Educational Leadership Network. She serves as the Principal Investigator of Semillas Digitales (Digital Seeds) a multi-year applied development research initiative in Nicaragua (http://www2.gse.upenn.edu/nicaragua/).

Ravitch’s research integrates across the fields of qualitative research, education, applied development, cultural anthropology, and human development and has four main strands: (1) Practitioner Research as a means to engendering sustainable professional and institutional development and innovation; (2) International applied development research that works from participatory and action research approaches (projects currently in the US, Nicaragua, and India); (3) Ethnographic and participatory evaluation research; and (4) Leader education and professional development.

Ravitch has published three books: Reason and Rigor: How Conceptual Frameworks Guide Research (with Matthew Riggan, Sage Publications, 2012); School Counseling Principles: Diversity and Multiculturalism (American School Counselor Association Press, 2006) and Matters of Interpretation: Reciprocal Transformation in Therapeutic and Developmental Relationships with Youth (with Michael Nakkula, Jossey-Bass, 1998).

Ravitch earned two master’s degrees from Harvard University in Human Development and Psychology and in Education and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in an interdisciplinary program that combined anthropology, sociology, and education.�

Nicole Mittenfelner Carl�is a doctoral candidate in the teaching, learning, and leadership division at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (PennGSE). She is Director of Impact Assessment for the Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives (CSBGL) and is conducting a multi-sited, multi-year participatory evaluation of the Center’s impact. Carl facilitates and teaches Youth Participatory Action Research and researches ways that schools can be more equitable and humane places as a part of her work with CSBGL. Carl is also a graduate research associate at PennGSE, where she is part of a research team that examines ways that teachers and parents can organize and act collectively as a means of educational problem-solving.

Carl has conducted qualitative research for over a decade. She has published articles about new teachers’ experiences with standardized curricula as well as about teacher activism and organizing. Her current research focus includes critical approaches to qualitative research, participatory action research, educational equity, urban education, and teacher education.

Carl is a former middle school language arts and lead teacher in the School District of Philadelphia as well as a former mentor to and supervisor of first-year teachers. Carl’s research interests stem from her experiences as an educator, and she focuses her work on ways that students, parents, and teachers can work together to address educational inequities.�

This book exceeded my expectations. It’s accessible and honest about the intricacies of qualitative design never underestimating its importance in bolstering the research process. The authors are adeptly clear and succinct, particularly when it comes to how to develop a conceptual framework often confounding in other texts I have read. Kenneth Hite holds a MA in International Relations from the University of Chicago. For the last twenty years, he has worked as a full-time writer and role-playing game designer, contributing to many famous games including GURPS, Hero System, Vampire: The Dark Ages, and Savage Worlds. He has written or co-written numerous books on esoteric subjects such as Cthulhu 101 and Where the Deep Ones Are. He is also the designer and writer of the Trail of Cthulhu role-playing system and its supplements.

Kennon Bauman holds degrees in Political Science and History from the University of South Dakota. He is a professional analyst whose writings on weird history, forteana, conspiracy theories, and adventure gaming can be most frequently found at www.theilluminerdy.com. He lives outside Washington, D.C. with his wife, two children, and dog.

Born and raised in Malaysia, Darren Tan grew up drawing spaceships, dinosaurs and the stuff of his imagination, which was fueled by movies and computer games. Inspired by these, he went on to study animation and later graduated as a Computer Animator from Sheridan College, Canada. After a brief stint in 3D animation, he decided to trade in polygons for a wacom tablet. Now he works as a digital concept artist at Imaginary Friends Studios and is enjoying getting paid for his hobby. Love this book. It is very fun and fluffy and a perfect companion for any pen and paper RPG or even miniatures based RPG games.
This book will be a staple in my future game writing plots for the foreseeable future.

An Okay Read

Almost a little too silly for my likes. Having an interest in the genre, and being a fan of most Osprey publications I felt it was worth the cost, but not one I found myself wanting to read from cover to cover. I would have enjoyed it more had they kept it to a specific period rather than trying to cover all of the history of the United Sates, or so it seemed. Personally I think WWI or WWII only would have made it a much better booklet.

Do you have any art school teachings or formal training?

I have a university degree in graphic design. I learn color's theory and the use of the airbrush, but never illustration nor drawing of the human figure. I learn everything of self-taught way. Most of my technique was the result of copy many Sorayama's paintings. I follow the step-by-step way to make paintings, in the end of Sorayama's books.

How long have you been painting?

My mother says that I draw since I was born. I believe in her because she conserves many drawings of me when I was I baby. I start draw nude womens since 9 years old, the very first time I own (rob from my uncle) a playboy magazine. I draw pin-up from 1993 that is the year when I learn to use airbrush.

Were you interested in art when you were growing up as a kid in Mexico? In 1977 I was 8 years old. I don't draw too much in that age. My "principal power" was molding plasticine. I do all the cartoon characters in plasticine. One night my mother take me to the cinema to see one movie called "Star Wars". When we are out of the cinema I was shook of the emotion. I was seen the most impressive movie in my short life. I arrives at my house running and my mother told me go to sleep, but I did not listen to her. I take the plasticine and start doing all the movie characters r2-d2, darth vader, x-wing, death star... I tried to make it fast, I was afraid to forget them all, but I was not quickly enough. So in my desperation I uses my "secondary power" and I start to draw. I draw too fast all night. I don't sleep that night. Star Wars make me the artist who I am now.

Are you the only artist in your family? No, my mother knows how to paint also - not professionally, but she does well. Why do you choose women as your subjects? Woman is the most beautiful thing ever created. Not landscapes, not rainbows, not stars, not flowers. Womens are more beautiful than anything.
