I liked that it does not just give you the basics for the geometry of GMAT, but more additional exercises and formulas, all thoroughly and clearly explained. It is a very targeted book. I would recommended on top of the Official GMAT Guide.

A great book in the Manhattan GMAT prep line up... don't that the test without it.

This is one useful guide to helping you through the GMAT quant section. I've read some math fundamental books leading up to this one and this book did a wonderful job of building towards a more intermediate/advanced explanation. It's a very long book but it's dense and packed with great information. The questions at the end of the chapters are challenging and help you absorb the material in an effective fashion. Highly recommended!

Okay, i haven't finished the book yet, but I'm about half way and I am enjoying the story (for the most part...). For those who want authentic regency romance with innocent foreplay like a true Jane Austen inspired novel, please look elsewhere. The language is very modern, sometimes even slang and innapropriate. It's also glaringly obvious this book did not have a professional editor of any kind. There a spelling mistakes, incorrect word usage ("due" instead of "do") and missing words entirely. There are sentanced that repeat and sometimes I have to stare at a sentance to see what the author actually meant to say (because she forgot a word or used the wrong word). I read the first chapter of this book on Wattpad and, honestly, it should have been the entire book on Wattpad and not published on Kindle, it's not ready yet. Luckily it's cheap so if you can get passed the grammar and spelling errors (and the sex scenes...) Then go for it. Otherwise go back to Wattpad and check out some other (better written and free) books like " Nothing Like the Novels" by FromPastToOpen on Wattpad. I just read that one earlier today and I enjoyed it a lot more than this one (so far).

A Charming & Smexy debut novel!

I have to admit, as someone who mostly reads horror/paranormal YA/NA and not a lot of Jane Austen type stuff, this book charmed the hell out of me. Courtney created refreshing, likeable characters that roped me in immediately. The story follows Beth, a twenty three year old in desperate search of a suitor because society has her rapidly descending into spinsterhood. When she receives an offer of an arranged marriage, her fantasy of how her life should be quickly shatters and reality sets in. (No spoilers, I promise). This story appeals to me because its about choices and the reasons we make them and how sometimes we don't know what we want until we have it. This is very well written for a debut and I admire when an author isn't afraid to add a little sexy to the story to up the stakes and still keep it tasteful. Well done!

About the Author

Prof. Dr. Dietrich Braun was the leader of the German Institute for Synthetic Materials in Darmstadt (Deutsches Kunststoff-Institut (DKI)) until his retirment in 2000. He is the author of numerous textbooks and research books.

Prof. Dr. Harald Cherdron was the director of the Department of Polymer Materials and Central Resarch in H�chst and�Professor at the University Marburg until his retirement in 1994.

Since 1999 Prof. Dr. Matthias Rehahn holds a professorship at the Ernst-Berl-Institute for Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry at the Technical University Darmstadt, and he is the leader of the German Institute for Synthetic Materials in Darmstadt.

Since 2001 Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Helmut Ritter is head of the Institute of Organic Chemistry� and Macromolecular Chemistry at the University D�sseldorf.

Prof. Dr. Brigitte Voit is Managing Director/Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of the "Leibniz-Institut f�r Polymerforschung Dresden e.V." (IPF) and head of the IPF Institute Macromolecular Chemistry.

About the Author
Joanna M. Burkhardt is collection management officer and director of the Narragansett Bay Campus and Providence Campus branch libraries of the University of Rhode Island. Her research has focused on information literacy and instruction, assessment, and collection development. She is lead author of Teaching Information Literacy: 50 Standards-Based Exercises for College Students and Creating a Comprehensive Information

Didactic without Constricting

Didactic texts are usually not appealing to someone like me because I feel the majority to be constricting of one's creative range. I have aspirations of becoming an educator and among many of the issues one must tackle is the ability to communicate in such a way as to have the receiver retain information, if not spark the juices which will create a desire to retain information. Part of the ability to retain information, at the foundation, is the receiver need be or aspire to become "information literate". I was advised to pick this copy up and give it a try to add to my repertoire of the educator's toolbox and it was a page turner from the start. The material is informative, constructive and best of all, though provides structure in ways to help, the structure is not constrictive and is provided in such a way that allows for creativity to build into the structure. My favorite sections are Scholarship as Conversation, Research as Inquiry and (Favorite) Authority. All and all, a very informative and fun text to read. I recommend to aspiring and established educators. 4 stars wonderful!

Practical, proven advice that really works

Individuals and organizations often try to find one major improvement - a "home run," if you will. Someone might say, "I want to lose 50 pounds" or "we need to develop a new product that doubles revenue." Goals like that might be scary... and for good reason, as described in the new book by Robert Maurer, PhD: "The Spirit of Kaizen: Creating Lasting Excellence One Small Step at a Time."

There's one action that can lead to lots of little improvements (and, eventually, to innovation) - the adoption of the "kaizen" mindset.

Robert Maurer is a faculty member in behavioral sciences at UCLA and the University of Washington. I previously reviewed his earlier book "One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way" and did a podcast interview with him about that book, which primarily focused on the application of "kaizen" (Japanese for "good change") style improvement approaches to his patients and their personal lives.

He wrote about how "small steps" in the style of kaizen (as practiced in the industrial world) could help individuals lose weight and change other personal behaviors. Instead of telling an overweight patient to start exercising an hour a day (which would cause the "fight or flight" instinct to kick in because it's a scary request), Dr. Maurer would ask a person to start exercising by just walking in place for the length of 30 seconds. This wasn't as scary, so people would try that small step, building enthusiasm and confidence that would allow them to build up to an hour a day. The success rate from starting small was much higher.

In his latest book, Maurer brings these ideas back to the workplace, with stories about how this same kaizen mindset can be applied to improve quality, boost morale, reduce costs, reduce healthcare expenses, and more. The book is focused more on businesses, hospitals, and organizations, rather than individuals - but the understanding of how change happens is based on our own personal brain chemistry and evolution. Maurer calls kaizen "a doable path to innovation" because we're more likely to have big changes occur when we start small. I wrote about similar thoughts from a Japanese hospital CEO back in November.

Maurer describes how the "reptile brain" (the amygdala) in the more complex human brain can help us, as when it's kicking in the powerful "fight or flight" response that's necessary when we are in real danger. The problem with the reptile brain is that the fight or flight response kicks in even when we merely imagine a dangerous situation or something threatening (such as losing one's job)... and this reptile brain shuts down higher level thought processes and capabilities. So, instead of saying that people shouldn't be afraid of change, we should recognize that large changes (or "radical changes," as he calls them) are scary... it's in our DNA... and we need to work to make changes smaller and, therefore, less scary.

In Chapter 1, Maurer writes of a doctor's office that he taught to use Kaizen. They were, initially, asking for innovation. But Maurer suggested that each person think about "the smallest step possible" that would improve the office. He had two rules:

1) The step couldn't cost anything (resources were tight in the struggling office)
2) The idea had to benefit the customer (the patient)

Maurer cites the American approach of "Training Within Industry" and the teachings of an American, W. Edwards Deming, in laying out the principles that allowed the clinic to dramatically reduce patient no show rates and improve patient satisfaction - lots of little improvements led to a successful practice. These aren't just Japanese practices. They are human practices that work around the world.

The clinic was hesitant to use kaizen, as are many, because the improvements seem trivial and insignificant. Kaizen and continuous improvement approaches aren't sexy or exciting... but they work. Maurer writes:

"These steps are so small that they may seem useless, but that's why they work. If the amygdala is like an alarm system, small steps are like cat burglars.... Your alarm never goes off.... You retain access to your rational, creative thoughts."

"The Spirit of Kaizen" is a short book (I read it on my flight back from Japan and it didn't take the whole trip), but it's full of examples that reinforce the core kaizen principles and our understanding of how people can embrace and initiate change for the betterment of customers (patients), themselves, and their organizations. The main themes are a bit repetitive, but they're solid and they work: start small (the smallest step possible), expect to stumble along the way, and continue striving to get better.

Best Business Book of 2012

This book is a short and useful guide to kaizen, the idea that small changes can produce big results. When we ask for big goals to be met, our brains shut down. They are overwhelmed. but when we ask "what is the one small thing we can do to get to our goal?", the brain does not get worked up and we can think clearly. A hospital wanted to increase the accuracy of the reports of its radiologists, who work alone. So, they showed them photos of patients awaiting their test results. Accuracy increased 46%. The book also highlights the power of questions to make small improvements:What is the one small thing I can do to(insert goal) that will take no more than(5,3,1) minute a day? He applies these techniques to a variety of areas, including reducing health care costs, boosting sales, and improving quality. While worth the time.

Outstanding -Real world approach to implementing permanent change!!

I stumbled on "The spirit of Kaizen" when surfing the audio channel during a long distance Trans-Atlantic flight and could not stop listening. I downloaded the book to my iPad and have bought 10 copies for all my managers.
Robert Maurer adopts a real-world, common sense approach to implementing a quality program without the bells and whistles. The contrasts between the Japanese and American psyches helps the reader bring it home when considering change initiatives particularly in the noisy, competitive and distracted business environments in which we find ourselves today. You should read it together with Chip and Dan Heath's book, "Switch".
Great read.

great book

This is a great book for learning about the whole process. Our 2.5 year old loves it although some parts are a little more complex than I had hoped they would be. We read it often, and he now knows milk comes from cows (and goats) and not just from the store. He will probably make us buy goat milk soon. :)

we love cows

my husband and i are dairy farmers in upstate new york, and this we found to be such a great book. we bought it for our grandkids last year and they never put it down. they ask to hear it every night before bed, and we are so thrilled that they enjoy it so.
