Great to hear a sex-positive voice

Spurred on by recommendations at Amazon, I purchased Carol Queen's book. Ms. Queen sees herself as a sex priestess if not goddess and frankly I'm prepared to give her such a title - sight unseen. To say her experience is vast and varied seems an understatement. I'm so happy to hear from a bona fide "sex positive" that I really enjoyed this book.

I was reading at furious clip and ran into page 84 like it was a stone wall. Ms. Queen repeats the horrible comparison made between circumsion and the erroneously named genital mutilation called "female circumsion". She dismisses the scientific reasons for circumsion as "late breaking theories" and then substitutes the PC-of-the-moment anti-male screed that this is what is what went wrong with so many men. She apparently had never heard that some adult men get circumcised just to improve their sex lifes. Frankly, if a procedure with the same pain and risks would have led to a 10% reduction in tooth decay, I would hope that my parents would go for it.

I have to admit the best parts of this book are when she goes squarely after the MacDworkinites (she doesn't use that word but you know who I mean). She has no problem standing up to those who would rather she kept to a more doctrinaire line. At one point she decides to try prostitution and some former friends refer to speak to her. No matter, this is a very independent woman. I wish I met more like her.

One minor point, this book is a collection of essays that were previously published and that means she sometimes repeats herself (yes, I know you have a Ph.D. in Sexuality) and any chronology is pretty well lost.

A challenge to social-feminist constructs of sexuality.

Queen's book is a very bold discussion of our culturally defined notions of the place of sex and sexuality, for both women and men. Her writing challenges many long-held feminist notions of "deviant" sexual practices as supporitng the suppression and devaluation of women. Instead, Queen shows through her own personal trials and errors with sex, that women can control, guide and determine their own sexuality through myriad experiences, even those deemed "deviant" by more repressed social factions. While Queen mentions the existence of violence in the sex industry, I feel she too easily dismisses the prevelance of such. True, many women such as herself choose their own path as sex workers, but many do not. More could be said as to how to make "politically correct" choices in the use of sex products/services to support those who choose to participate, as opposed to supporting those who force participation. Queen's experience as an author of erotica is evident in this writing. Interestingly enough, this may begin to cause the reader to question just how much they are in tune with their own sexuality, when after completing a narrative passage, the reader suddenly wonders, "Wow, did that just turn me on?" Of course, you have to not be afraid to read it first. Enjoy.

So good it's on back order!

Seriously, this is an excellent book. Carol Queen is one of the grand dames of sex-positivity. Much (okay, all) of the book is autobiographical, and Queen uses her own experiences to further her ideas about radical sexuality. Ms. Queen is or has been all of the things other reviewers mentioned, and has also received a PhD from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality (IASHS) -- in other words, she knows her stuff. Though some of her prose is light, the stories of Queen's life are fascinating, and the theories she puts forth and hypotheses she posits are valid. I've read Real Live Nude Girl (which are, incidentally, the section titles) several times and almost always quote from it in my own essays about radical sexuality. Fun AND smart.

My cookbook is the result of my personal journey as a chef, health practitioner, and food lover. I wrote Paleo Desserts because I wanted to re-create all the classic American desserts that I once craved, in a Paleolithic, or hunt-and-gather version. Any caveperson could make them, that is, if he or she had a food processor!

If you enjoy a special diet, welcome home. Perhaps you've found that gluten, sweets, dairy, or nightshades are not what you need. Maybe you miss your favorite sweets, but know they will not make you healthy and happy.

These recipes give you delicious desserts that are truly nourishing, and extremely low in carbs. They're tastier than my Mom's, because they're made with real food like fresh vegetables, tart fruits, and nuts. All of the recipes are free of gluten, grains, dairy, beans, nightshades, industrial gmo foods like corn, soy, canola, and all sugars. Hooray!

Although I suggest ingredients, I'm not promoting any product. I want you to choose the ingredients that are right for you. The recipes were built around the carefully researched products I suggest, and you are free to take a chance experimenting with your favorite ingredients. The main "flour" is pure shredded coconut (27% carbs) ground in any food processor. The suggested sweetener is Just Like Sugar Table Top natural chicory root sweetener with zero carbs. You are free to substitute your own sweetener cup for cup.

For me - and perhaps for you - this has been an interesting journey of giving up a lot of foods, one at a time. When I saw the luscious photo of Mexican Wedding Cookies, I simply had to make them. They were easy, especially following the video on her site. They tasted rich and delicate - even better than my mom's! Next I made the red velvet cupcakes - they were fabulous, and no red food coloring - just beets and chocolate. I put Cr�me Cheese Frosting on them, made with dairy-free coconut butter and lemon. It tasted exactly like cream cheese to me! With healthy desserts like this, I feel at home in my body again.

I have "suffered" from a sugar craving myself for years, and I am so relieved that I can have a treat now and again and feel good about it - just as my body does. Eating healthy takes time and effort, but what else is more important than what we put in our bodies? Once I picked up all the necessary ingredients, many of which were unfamiliar to me, I was ready to go. And now my cupboard is stocked and I am the more knowledgeable for it.

The ingredients are easy. Some of them weren't at my Whole Foods Market, so I clicked the links on Jane's website to buy them. (JanesHealthyKitchen.com) I was nearly overwhelmed by all the other original recipes there. The non-standard ingredients are the most important ones. That's what makes this Paleo desserts book special. They're low-carb and there's no sugar rush! I found Just Like Sugar Table Top chicory root sweetener in my Whole Foods Market, but all they had was a 4oz container. I asked them to stock the 1# green bag, so it's more economical.

Jane's recipes use pure shredded coconut flakes that are only 27% carbs, ground in a food processor. It has a delicious rich, clean flavor. I've been trying to bake Paleo for months, but when I use coconut flour the baked goods are heavy and flat-tasting. I didn't understand why. Then I found out coconut flour is 71% carbs, about the same as wheat flour. It is processed, de-fatted, and pulverized with the brown hull. No wonder it's a dark color and tasteless. This book has provided me with a real education in healthy eating. Thank you, Jane.

An amazing discovery in the book is the flaky pie crust that rolls out perfectly. We all know how challenging pie crusts can be . . . Great for Paleo Pumpkin Pie - another gorgeous photo! How did she invent so many original recipes? I've been eating mostly low-carb and organic for years. But these are the very first desserts that taste delicious and are healthy too. I wish the book had a spiral binding so I could open it and prop it upright on the counter. Too bad it's going to get really messy over the holidays, because I'm gong to use it a lot!

Desserts for joyous health

I'm a health practitioner with decades of experience treating almost every disease known to man, from cancer to diabetes, obesity, metabolic disorder, hyper-tension, celiac disease, MS, and just plain stress. My observation is that most every one of my clients could benefit from a diet that is free of gluten and sugars. To feel wonderful after eating chocolate cake with filling and delicious frosting an indulgence which made with wheat flour and sugar left me feeling sluggish and with Jane's recipe I feel light and energtic.

Jane has invented recipes that re-create traditional favorite desserts in a truly low carb form, so they taste even better than the original. She uses simple Pale olithic ingredients, like coconut, chicory root, tart fruits and vegetables. After years of waiting I'm so excited to finally have a recipe book I can recommend to my clients. People deserve to have their favorite sweets. This book allows everyone to enjoy Yellow Birthday Cake, Fudgy Brownies, and Pumpkin Pie, all made with natural zero carb chicory root sweetener, which doesn't raise the blood sugar one bit. Not Just Like Sugar

The book is well written and the recipes look good. However, all of the recipes call for a sugar substitute called "Just Like Sugar." I find "Just Like Sugar" to be nothing like sugar. I made the chocolate chip cookies and followed the recipe to the letter. The finished product had a chemical taste with a metallic after taste. I had several testers and they all agreed that "Just Like Sugar" leaves a bad after taste. I am disappointed because I follow the Paleo diet. I was looking forward to some "sweets." As they say, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

About the Author
Athol Kay is an innovative thinker, humorist and family man with a one track mind. He is a "Mixed Marital Artist" combining a variety of relationship approaches from evolutionary psychology, Pickup Artist "Game", sociology, biology, life experience, romance novels, crappy women's magazines, far too many books, blogging, behavior modification and cheap porn. He has distilled all this research into a few outstandingly effective tactics for gaining happiness and sex in marriage.

Athol was born in New Zealand and met Jennifer nine days before he was due to fly home after working on a summer camp in Maryland in 1991. Long distance for three years, they finally married in 1994. Married for 16 years, they have two daughters and live in Connecticut. They have a carefully balanced relationship where Athol dreams up all kinds of weird stuff, and Jennifer doesn't leave him.

The author is also aware that has painted himself into a corner by writing a book on monogamy. At around 112,500 words, it is the longest chastity belt in existence. It only chafes a little.

Wives - You want that giddy feeling you used to have for your hubby? Buy this book for your husbands!

Coming from a woman's perspective, this book hit RIGHT ON with the problems I was having being attracted to my husband. It actually tells men how to make their wives want them. It's written by a man, for men, and I appreciated that because the author gave examples with his own relationship with his wife on his daily interactions that work to help her lust after him. It made it much more concrete and real-life to us as the readers.

Not only does the book talk about why I was feeling less attracted to my very physically fit, tall, extremely athletic, highly intelligent, well-maintained, loving husband, but it gave specific steps for him to take in order to make me go crazy for him again. I had no idea it was as easy as him becoming more of an alpha-male at home with me. I knew I wanted him to be more assertive in the bedroom and generally in our married life together by making more or most of the decisions such as where we're going to eat or what we're going to do this weekend, but no matter how many times and ways I tried to tell him this, it didn't seem to compute because he's so polite with me and that's how he showed me love. This book not only explains to a man why and how to be assertive with women, but also has anecdotes of the author's personal relationship with his wife on little playful interactions and flirtation that a lot of men like my husband didn't do and didn't think to do. The author was able to put into words and communicate to my husband in a fun, comical way, what I could not, in explaining what I really wanted and needed in a man.

Be forewarned, the author sort of blames women for their unhappiness in the marriage and points the finger at women for helping to "create" men they won't desire. It wasn't until I read further, that I had to agree with him. I am one of those women who thought that by "training" my husband to do more chores around the house and by getting him to be more domesticated, nurturing and sensitive in our relationship, I'd be happier. Even though it's clear the book is meant for men to read, I couldn't help but read most of it myself. I decided to stop reading about 80 pages from the end because I didn't want to know, in advance, what alpha "sex moves" my husband may try on me. I love surprises! I must also say that just the act of reading the book turned me on to my husband more before he even attempted the new improved alpha-male with me.

This book concentrates on telling you the truth and giving you common sense, logical solutions to the problems. It may not be what appeals to some women's sensitivities and feminist-minded viewpoints. In other words, it's not politically correct, but I liked that! I've read those types of books and nothing helped my situation. I truly believe my husband needed to be "de-programmed" from the feminist mindset he was raised in and made to understand that his instincts about how to take the lead and give a few orders as the head of the family with our kids as well as with me, while also showing me his love (which he already knew very well how to do, are natural and good for our relationship. Don't get the wrong impression. The author isn't condoning any kind of abuse or jerk mentality, he's just stating the facts - that most women want and need to be dominated in their sexual relationships in order to be truly content and turned on sexually.

I plan on recommending this book to any and all of my friends complaining about their relationships / marriages. It really was a life-saver!

Fantastic Book

This is one of the most liberating books I have ever read. Pop culture would have males believe that speaking up for themselves and being a leader is somehow demeaning to women.

The feminist movement has for too long purported that the sensitive male is what women really want. They do. Everyone needs emotional closeness. But women also want men to be men. Women want men to lead. Testosterone is not the evil that the pop psychologists would have you believe. Being a man is not about demeaning or dominating or abusing your mate. It is about being a leader.

My wife is an immensely talented highly valuable career woman. Yet she wants me to be the leader at home.

The book gives married men good advice on being a better leader at home.

May have saved my marriage.

I don't remember exactly how I cam across this book, I think I found Athol's blog and ordered the book from there, but I know that my wife and I have been having ongoing problems for years and I was ready to get out.

Enter the Married Man Sex Life Primer 2011. I blasted through the book in two days, Athol's style is informal and accessible (most of the content is modified from the blog) that makes this book an easy read despite a ton of content.

After reading the book I realize that being the "nice guy" husband isn't enough to get my needs met in the marriage and have started the "plan" to bettering myself. My wife responded positively almost immediately, but was confused at how abrupt the change was. I'm in a constant battle with myself right now, trying to undo years worth of self-defeating behaviors that I thought would help. Trust me, it's worth it.

Guys, I can not recommend this book highly enough. Athol provides a fresh new way of looking at your relationship and gives biological, evolutionary, and otherwise completely rational explanations for how relationships work.

If your wife has shut down on you and you're feeling trapped, the problem may not be that you just aren't doing enough housework, like I've seen other books recommend, but that you aren't giving your wife a man that is worth being attracted to.

In sum, if you're willing to put forth some effort, this book works. If you aren't getting what you want out of the marriage, try this first. It will save you a ton of money that you'll be spending on hookers or lawyers.

About the Author
Edward M. Corrado is director of library technology at Binghamton University, Binghamton, New York. He has written articles and presented at multiple national and international conferences on various library technology topics, including digital preservation and cloud computing. His other research interests include open source software in libraries, social software in libraries, and the role of libraries in Democracy 2.0.

Heather Lea Moulaison is assistant professor at the iSchool at the University of Missouri. Her research interests include metadata, digital libraries, cloud computing, international librarianship, web technologies, and information organization and access.

As a senior practitioner in the field, I find this volume invaluable as a guide to procuring all levels of support for our preservation efforts. Well written and researched, the authors expertly explain how and why preservation programs must be organized and financed in terms understandable to administrators and executives otherwise unfamiliar with our practices. We purchased multiple copies to distribute to our digitization team and I heartily recommend you do the same.

I have added this book to my "Amazon wish list." A very helpful review was published in the Metropolitan Archivist by Julia Kim, National Digital Stewardship Resident, NYU Libraries, where she says on page 9, "Corrado and Moulaison emphasize that digital preservation is 'mostly a management issue,' rather than a purely technical issue (13). It is also a financial issue. As Corrado and Moulaison point out, there has been scant attention paid to 'how we can ensure that digital preservation activities survive beyond the current availability of soft-money funding' (77). They argue that concepts such as 'return on investment' are critical for sustainability and must be a part of our discourse. At this stage in the development of this quickly emerging field, institutions clearly can no longer rush to digitize at-risk content without a better understanding of the cost and values over the very long term." Pleasantly surprised, but needs an editor

I picked up this book during the free promotion, and honestly, I didn't want to like it. I think I've read everything Alison has written, and the obvious lack of editing in all of her books has gotten really tiresome to me. But I keep reading Alison because she has a unique voice - no, a unique soul. There are other copycat writers, but with Alison you really get the feeling that she is genuine. I expected The Art of HomeMaking to be old and tired, but it is not. Broken out into 30 days of thoughtful "homework" for the homemaker, it feels do-able and fresh even to those of us who have read approximately a zillion books on the subject.

The lack of structure made this book impossible to follow. Lines and even pages repeating and pages beginning with lines that obviously belonged somewhere else made for confusion. I hope my homecaring is not so careless as the editing of this book.

Feel Good Read

I like Alison's books due to the feel good, cozy factor in all her ideas. I very often put them into practice and my home is better for it. I did not give it the full 5 marks due to the cutesy talk and over use of the word scrumptious which really grates on you after a while. If she cleaned up that habit it would be a full 5 stars from me : )

About the Author
David Freedman received his B.Sc. from McGill and his Ph.D. from Princeton. He has worked as a consultant for the City of San Francisco, the County of Los Angeles, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Department of Justice. He has written several previous books and numerous technical papers. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and teaches at the University of California, Berkeley.

Robert Pisani received his B.A. and Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests include probability models of market-price behavior and the statistical valuation of financial instruments.

Roger Purves received his B.A. at the University of British Columbia and his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, where he currently teaches. His research interests are in the mathematical foundations of probability theory.

A CLASSIC.....BUT...

I used the first edition of this book in a class I took at Berkeley back in 1989. I again turned to it for a self-study refresher recently and found it's intuitive style quite refreshing and even kinda fun. This book teaches the concepts without all the noise and distraction of more recent books that try to throw in every new technique and software application they can think of. This book is a classic in the field, on a level with Sylvanus Thompson's Calculus Made Easy. No, it won't be the last stats book you ever buy but it will get you up to speed fast and allow you to work much faster through more advanced texts and with a deeper understanding for the theory.

I do have one complaint. I like math and at a few points I wanted to tell the authors to quit teasing me and just give me the equation already. For example, they take several sections of text to introduce correlation and linear regression before finally introducing the actual linear equation. Maybe it's better to introduce it that way, I'm not a teacher. Others have mentioned the lack of standard nomenclature in this book but I can't see how that would be more than a minor inconvenience moving to a more advanced text. Another reviewer mentioned Statistics Unplugged by Sally Caldwell. I also have that book and though it has more standard nomenclature, I found it to be "wordy" and not as intuitive as the book in this review.

Superlative, Witty, Literate Introductory Statistics Text

I'm not a "math person," and was compelled to take an Introductory Statistics course as the final math class toward my BA. I approached the course with preconceptions after hearing horror stories from other humanities folks about failure, shipwreck, plagues of locusts, and thoughts of suicide.

This is one of the top half-dozen texts of my entire college career.

Not only do the authors make statistics accessible and even fun, they do so in a consistently smart style that simultaneously simplifies statistical concepts while not pandering in the quality of language overall, or occasions for clever asides. While many professors will end up using modern calculators for the problems, the text bases its lessons on the use of tables (normal, t, and chi-square). I found myself following both the professor and, electively, the text for a more full understanding of "old school" methods. Each chapter has enough embedded problems (with answers at the end of the text) that the reviews and other materials provided by my professor were often redundant. I wish I had access to the answers for each chapter review questions, but that can hardly be a criticism in my "student" copy of the text.

I'll be revisiting this book long after I've ceased being a student. It has helped me have more informed attitudes about statistical products in general, which I suppose was a point of the course and the text.

Great text for Statistics beginners

This text was used in an Introductory Statistics course I took at Western Michigan University. I found it to be a delightful book that was designed for students with no or little background in statistics. It attempts to take everyday events and show how statistics can be used to make inferences from them. The book does have worked out problems in the back and answers for selected problems in the text.

Not quite as good as others in series, Maybe Not great for kids scared of the dark

This is book 7 in the Magical Animal Friends series, modeled after the popular Rainbow Fairies books (same formula, two girls encounter a magic being that introduces them to a very "fluffy" version of a magical battle between good and bad). This book is my 9 yo daughter's LEAST favorite so far of the first 8. My 7 yo enjoys reading these series as well, but she has not read this one yet. My 9 yo reads at an 8th grade level and reads these books in ~20 mins, my 7 yo reads more at 3rd grade level and usually reads them over the course of two evenings at bedtime.
Parent Rundown:
+ It is not necessary to read the books in order to enjoy this one, so if you have a young girl who likes foxes, she can enjoy this story.
+ This is a beginning chapter book designed for budding readers, but can be enjoyed by girls through mid-elementary grades.
+ No potty humor.
+ This book actually teaches a little bit about foxes / nocturnal animals, which is more than some of the other books have from an educational stand point!
+ Books contain magic and fantasy as well as an evil witch, Grizelda. My 9yo comments that Grizelda never really does anything which eventually makes for anticlimactic reading.
+ Plot summary: The Fuzzybrush Fox family sees something strange in the sky in Friendship Forest just as the sun sets. This book features the third dragon sent by Grizelda the Witch since the introduction of the dragons in book 5. Smudge the dragon blocks the starlight from the sky, causing the leaves to fall from the Friendship Tree, which would prevent our two heroines from visiting Friendship Forest anymore.
+ No animals are actually injured, but the Fuzzybrush Fox Family is turned to shadows. Grizelda makes a brief appearance. The plot is resolved when the two heroines along with Ruby fox perform a dance and get Smudge to join in and reverse his naughty doings. It's a little ludicrous, but Smudge ends up as a friend.
+ This book ends with a cliffhanger for the finale in Book 8. So though your child doesn't have to read book 5 or 6, they will probably want to read book 8 pretty badly.
+ If your child is afraid of the dark, your child may not like this book as much. There's a lot of tripping around in the dark / animals being turned to shadows before the silly resolution.
+ Neat page or two of picture puzzles in the back.
+ Expect the content to be a tad vapid, as the Rainbow Fairies certainly were, but these books encourage children to read more when they need a mental break from school work.
