A MUST FOR STUDENTS CONSIDERING ALGEBRA
By A Customer
Being that I am 28 years of age and a freshman in college, I was placed in the remedial math class for which this text was required. I was terrified due to the fact I failed math in high school and even the WORD Algebra scared me. This book has great examples and it really helped me understand the concepts of Algebra. I have a 97% average in my class and when I go onto Algebra I next term, I won't be so terrified! :)

Buy this book now!
By Neal C
I am a 34 year old student that has struggled with math my entire life. I have failed many math classes in college because I just did not clearly understand how to do the math problems. I enrolled at Harbor College in Willmington, CA this fall 2003 and purchased this required book. To my amazement, this book is written in a way that a dummie like me can easily learn all the lessons. I now have a class grade of 95 and FINALLY because of this book, I can do algebra word problems, and I understand how to check them. I am even tutoring some of my classmates, WOW! thats not too bad for a dummie! I thank the author for creating the best prealgebra book I have ever seen. It is written STEP-BY-STEP and in the most basic format that can be explained. Please only purchase this book. You will not be dissapointed and you will pass prealgebra. All thanks to K. Elayn Martin-Gay, what a job you did putting the book together!

A Teacher's Perspective
By The Thoughtful Sehlat
This book has been a life-saver during my first year of teaching. Here's my basic summary of its myriad virtues:

1. The problems are beautifully authentic. They never try to take a basic concept and contrive a problem around it, like "What is the absolute value of the temperature of Pluto?" (I have had this problem with the textbook for my lower course quite often.)

2. Each lesson is full of examples showing fully-worked problems, and in the margins are similar problems. So if you want to highlight a certain problem-solving technique, you can walk the kids through the example and then have them try it on their own right next to it, even writing in the book.

3. Nothing corny. The images are helpful. No reference to manipulatives, but helpful diagrams in their place. There are also proofs of new ideas, often done informally through patterns. These are used to show why a negative times a negative is a positive, etc. You can really get the kids talking about the concepts in a meaningful way.

4. One of my favorite things is to pull one of the few writing questions out of the problem set and use it as an opening question for the lesson. These provide great concepts for debate, like "Why is this graph deceptive?" or "Why is this solution incorrect?" Sixth graders are at just the right age to play Sherlock and root out the fallacy, or engage in a good argument.

Use this book! It will not disappoint!

Regeneration, by Pat Barker

"The trilogy is trying to tell something about the parts of war that don't get into the official accounts" –Pat Barker

The first book of the Regeneration Trilogy and a Booker Prize nominee

In 1917 Siegfried Sasson, noted poet and decorated war hero, publicly refused to continue serving as a British officer in World War I. His reason: the war was a senseless slaughter. He was officially classified "mentally unsound" and sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital. There a brilliant psychiatrist, Dr. William Rivers, set about restoring Sassoon's "sanity" and sending him back to the trenches. This novel tells what happened as only a novel can. It is a war saga in which not a shot is fired. It is a story of a battle for a man's mind in which only the reader can decide who is the victor, who the vanquished, and who the victim.

One of the most amazing feats of fiction of our time, Regneration has been hailed by critics across the globe. As August 2014 marks the 100-year anniversary of World War I, this book is as timely and relevant as ever.

Amazon.com Review
Regeneration, one in Pat Barker's series of novels confronting the psychological effects of World War I, focuses on treatment methods during the war and the story of a decorated English officer sent to a military hospital after publicly declaring he will no longer fight. Yet the novel is much more. Written in sparse prose that is shockingly clear -- the descriptions of electronic treatments are particularly harrowing -- it combines real-life characters and events with fictional ones in a work that examines the insanity of war like no other. Barker also weaves in issues of class and politics in this compactly powerful book. Other books in the series include The Eye in the Door and the Booker Award winner The Ghost Road.

From Library Journal
In 1917, decorated British officer and poet Siegfried Sassoon wrote a declaration condemning the war. Instead of a court-martial, he was sent to a hospital for other "shell-shocked" officers where he was treated by Dr. William Rivers, noted an thropologist and psychiatrist. Author Barker turns these true occurrences into a compelling and brilliant antiwar novel. Sassoon's complete sanity disturbs Dr. Rivers to such a point that he questions his own role in "curing" his patients only to send them back to the slaughter of the war in France. World War I decimated an entire generation of European men, and the horrifying loss of life and the callousness of the government led to the obliteration of the Victorian ideal. This is an important and impressive novel about war, soldiers, and humanity. It belongs in most fiction collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
In this fact/fiction hybrid, Barker (Union Street, 1983, etc.) turns from the struggle for survival of northern England working- class folk to the struggle back to sanity by British officers unhinged by WW I trench warfare. Craiglockhart War Hospital, a grim psychiatric facility outside Edinburgh, is the setting. The framework is the arrival of Siegfried Sassoon at Craiglockhart in the summer of 1917, and his discharge back to France in November. Sassoon is treated by the eminent neurologist (and Army captain) William Rivers, whose job is to restore his damaged warriors to fighting condition. Sassoon is a relatively easy assignment. Despite his public statement protesting the war, Sassoon is no pacifist; this complex poet feels at home in the Army and is an exceptionally courageous officer, beloved by his men, to whom he feels a blood-debt that can be paid only by his return. For all the sparring between Sassoon and Rivers, only a hair separates them, for the latter is also a man of enormous integrity, profoundly troubled by the horrors his patients must endure. And it is these horrors (not the clipped exchanges of Sassoon and Rivers) that linger in the mind: Burns's vomiting nightmares caused by a mouthful of decomposing German flesh; Prior's being rendered mute after handling a human eye. At the center is Rivers, a model therapist, whose unstinting support may give even the wretched Burns a chance at a normal life. Barker has also provided some workmanlike off-base romance for Prior, her one developed fictional character; but the heart of the work, where the big fish swim, is Rivers's consciousness, his insights into front- line behavior enriched by his anthropological straining. Don't look here for the dramatic sweep of a war novel; instead, you get a scrupulously fair reconstruction of Craiglockhart, plus a moving empathy for both doctors and patients. The extent of that empathy earns Barker's work a place on the shelf of WW I literature. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A thoroughly moving book
By Joe Copping
Having just finished reading "Birdsong" I felt compelled to read more about a period of time that is moving out of living memory. I think "Regeneration" is a superb book that is well written, well researched and moving. I think books like this are so important because we should not be allowed to forget what the people of that time went through and we should not be allowed to trivialise what the First World War did to human beings and how it broke the seemingly Golden Age that had developed throughout Victorian and Edwardian England. I think the novel helps to honour the memory of the people who gave their lives in the war over something they did not understand or comprehend. The book is not just about war as it goes far deeper in helping to explain humanity, gender, class and truth. "Regeneration" is a disturbing and thought provoking book which people should read firstly because it is a good book and secondly becuase it will ensure that you do not forget what the people of the time and especially the soliders went through. They were caught up in a war of industrial proportions and were caught up in a war that they did not understand and we should forever hold them in high regard and in our memories. Afterall, in one month in 1917 there were 104,000 casualties in the war. Sacrifice like that deserves and should be remembered.
From a literary point of view, this book is superbly crafted and is an original work of fiction with a good story. It is energetic and highly readable and I recommend it to anyone.

A fine philosophical novel, but not for the average reader
By Dave Deubler
This first book in Barker's WWI trilogy is based on the real-life treatment of poet Siegfried Sassoon by psychiatrist and anthropologist Dr. William Rivers at Craiglockhart War Hospital. Sassoon has publicly denounced the war as a "senseless slaughter" and refuses to fight anymore. The powers that be assign him to Rivers' care as a victim of "shell shock" - a traumatic experience that leaves men unable to function. The hospital's aim is not so much to cure as to return men to active duty - an objective that leaves Rivers conflicted as doctor and a humanitarian.
In an era when treatment of mental illnesses was often barbaric, (as in a memorable scene near the book's conclusion), Rivers' treatment plan is to cure with compassion and respect for the patient. He allows these men the freedom to work through their experiences instead of repressing them. In doing so, he takes some of their suffering onto himself, and is changed in the process. The give and take between doctor and patient is the real meat of the story.
But beyond the plot, there's a lot to think about in this novel. In fact, the real genius of this work is not the plot or the characters or the setting, but rather the seemingly endless array of serious ethical questions that crop up as these men struggle with their situations. Was Britain justified in going to war against Germany? Can war ever be moral? Who is responsible for the actions of nations? Do soldiers abdicate their moral responsibilities when they don the uniform? How can a doctor cure a patient's infirmity only to send him back to the front lines to die? How does this apply to conscientious objectors? Is it enough to treat symptoms when the underlying causes are psychological? Barker doesn't provide answers, but wants us to look for them in ourselves.
This would be a terrific book for teaching an ethical philosophy course, and surely that's why this novel is so highly praised by reviewers. However, as an entertainment, this book is substantially less successful. One patient's brief dalliance with a factory girl provides almost our only glimpse of a woman, and even this episode seems tacked on, and is decidedly unromantic. And as one might expect, there is absolutely no trace of humor in this book at all - no one ever cracks a smile, let alone a joke. Less predictably, there's very little action in this book, either. The patients' tales of horrors at the front are powerful enough, but rarely run more than a page or two, and we don't get many of those. So while this is indeed a brilliant work of fiction, it should only be recommended to those who are deeply into ethical philosophy.

The callous complacence
By Linda Bulger
Regeneration is the first novel of a trilogy bearing the same name. In this book novelist Pat Barker tells the story of shell-shocked British officers receiving treatment in Edinburgh's Craiglockhart War Hospital under the care of Dr. W.H.R. Rivers. Barker chose to build the novel around real events and real characters: Dr. Rivers was a neurologist and anthropologist, and two of the principal characters are poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen.

Sassoon, a successful and decorated commissioned officer, became disillusioned with the inhumanity of the war and what he called its deliberate prolongation. Though not a pacifist himself, he was influenced by pacifist friends and wrote a statement denouncing the suffering imposed on the troops. The military establishment determined that he was suffering from shell-shock and sent him to Rivers for rehabilitation.

Rivers and his moral outlook are the centerpiece of Regeneration. The book takes its name from his groundbreaking work on nerve regeneration, and we follow his difficult work with the many physical and mental manifestations of war service among his patients at Craiglockhart. ''It was prolonged strain, immobility and helplessness that did the damage, and not the sudden shocks or bizarre horrors,'' Rivers wrote. Patriotic and supportive of the war himself, he faced the constant dilemma of treating men sent over the edge by life in the trenches and readying them to be sent back for more.

Regeneration emphasizes themes of social class, gender roles and homosexuality. The war experienced by those fighting it could never be known by those watching from home, and the bonds formed in service are shown to be complex. Emotional regeneration, through writing and talking about experienced horrors, reflects Barker's choice of Rivers as a central figure. In using real people and events, she shepherds us along ground already slightly familiar to the reader who knows anything about Sassoon's and Owen's poetry. She is a crisp and effective writer; with a trilogy in mind, she could have laid out the territory in pure fiction. I understand that the rest of the trilogy emphasizes the fictional characters. I look forward to reading The Eye in the Door and the Booker-winning The Ghost Road, because as good as Regeneration is, it is clearly an unfinished story.

Exposure and Understanding the Histogram, by Andrew S. Gibson

What does a histogram tell you about contrast, dynamic range, underexposure, and overexposure? Why does exposure differ for digital photography versus film photography? What happens when the exposure is wrong?

In this digital short, author Andrew Gibson answers these questions and more, showing how to use the histogram in practice to obtain optimum exposure. Going beyond simply focusing on how to achieve the "right" exposure for a given situation, he examines how the question of exposure is as open to creative interpretation as any other aspect of photography. By the end of this guide, you’ll understand how to take a photo that is correctly exposed using the tools provided by your DSLR camera.

In this ebook, you will learn about:

  • The exposure triangle: ISO, aperture, and shutter speed
  • Differences between exposing for raw files and JPEG files
  • Exposing to the right to obtain an optimum raw file
  • Shooting in automatic mode–when to do so and how to use exposure compensation
  • Shooting in manual mode–when to do so and how to adjust exposure

Interesting small book on Histograms
By Mike From Mesa
This review is for the Kindle edition of this book.

I had been looking for some detailed information about the histograms on digital cameras to help me determine if my photos were exposed properly. I had looked on the internet and not found anything sufficiently detailed or helpful. When looking for something about histograms in the Kindle store I found this book and, because of it's very low price, decided to buy it.

The book is interestingly written and the author takes time and care to make sure that the reader has enough background to understand what he is writing. He covers a good deal of helpful information without descending into too much technical jargon and I came away knowing much more about digital camera histograms than I knew before I started. There is no table of contents so I thought it would help if I listed some of the major topics covered by this book. This list should give an indication of the contents but it is not exhaustive.

Exposure modes
What is a histogram
Color histograms
RGB vs luminance histograms
Dynamic range and contrast
Tonal distribution
Clipped highlights
Specular highlights
Underexposure
Clipping
Overexposure
Highlight clipping
Exposing to the right
The exposure triangle
Automatic vs manual exposure

I wanted to give some information about how much information is contained in the sections since Amazon does not give any size details and, when I bought the book, I did not know if it was 5 pages or 500 pages. Giving page sizes for ebooks is tricky since ebook readers are different sizes and users can set their own font sizes. Nonetheless on my Kindle Fire, with the font size set to the second lowest, this book contained just over 50 pages of content (not including the cover page, title page and legal stuff). While it will not make you an expert it does have a lot of information and, in my opinion, is well worth the purchase price. Even so, I did not give it 5 stars because it failed to answer some of the questions that it raised. For example,

How can someone increase the contrast, as seen in the histogram, when taking a photo?
How can someone increase the tonal range (to broaden the coverage of the histogram) if it is too low?
How can someone change settings to correct histogram problems when shooting with an automatic flash?
What is the difference between "exposure blending" and HDR (since he recommends the first but not the second)?
What is the difference between "partial metering" and "spot metering" (since the definitions he gives for both are virtually identical)?

The ebook itself displays properly with no broken lines, misspelled words or embedded spaces. It has a good number of images to explain what is being discussed but the images are very small and it is sometimes difficult to see what the author is referring to. In particular Mr Gibson refers to "blinkies" and I was unable to find the (presumably blinking) indicator in the pictures 0f the lcd in the book.

Nevertheless I think the book is well worth its price and feel that I learned a great deal about digital camera histograms that I did not know before I read it and recommend it to others who, like myself, knew little or nothing about how to understand what a histogram is trying to tell you.

Amazon.com Review
The Extreme Teen Bible dares teens to crack open its pages and live up to the cutting-edge standard found inside. This New King James translation (thoroughly explained in teen-friendly language) is clad in funky purple print and snowboard-type logos, appealing to the thrill seeker by promising a life of "no fears, no regrets, just a future with a promise." Generous introductions, full-page profiles of faith-filled biblical characters, and a quick reference index covering subjects from abortion to worship guide the young reader into a more "extreme" relationship with God. "What's It Mean?" sidebars appear on almost every page, answering tough questions, pointing out God's promises, and directing teens into the will of God for their lives. By portraying Christ as the "truest revolutionary of all time," the Bible becomes a survival guide to the world that teens live in. The editors assert that "It's all here--truth, inspiration, bottom-line actual reality." The only questions left is, "Are you up for the challenge?" --Jill Heatherly

DSDM is about people, not tools. It is about truly understanding the needs of a business, delivering software solutions that work and delivering them as quickly and as cheaply as possible. The Dynamic Systems Development Method provides a framework of controls and best practice for Rapid Application Development. It was created by a consortium of organisations and it has been proved, since its publication in January 1995, to be extremely effective in delivering maintainable systems which match the needs of the business better than those produced using traditional lifecycles. This book, commissioned by the DSDM Consortium and written by the chairman of the Technical Committee which developed the method, explores the day-to-day realities of implementing the method. It is a practitioner's guide, dealing with issues such as how to get people from different disciplines to work together as a team, how to gain commitment and how to manage projects within normal business constraints. Do you want to cut the development time and increase the fitness-for-use of screen based business applications, by orders of magnitude? This book will enable those in organisations which develop or purchase tailored IT systems, to gain a clear understanding of the benefits of the incremental and iterative approach embodied in the DSDM.

Background

For 40 years the business community has looked to the automation of clerical processes both for efficiency and to gain elusive competitive advantage. In that period, information technology practitioners have consistently failed to deliver the necessary solutions on time, within budget, or to provide the functionality needed by the business.

It has taken us this amount of time to understand that business requirements change rapidly and are difficult to define, and that the people who understand business processes best are the people who use them day-by-day. We have seen that development projects can gain a life of their own, and become enmeshed in their own complexity, but we have learned that applications development is not a black art, and is amenable to structure and discipline.

During the last two decades of the twentieth century, a number of serious attempts have been made to understand the application development process and to codify ways in which these failures can be overcome. In 1994, information systems professionals in the UK from large and small organizations in a wide variety of industries, came together with consultants and project managers from some of the largest companies in the IT industry to form a not-for-profit consortium. This consortium is dedicated to understanding the best practice in application development and codifying it in a way that can be widely taught and implemented.

The result is DSDM (Dynamic Systems Development Method), a project delivery framework that truly serves the need of the business: DSDM projects deliver on time, to budget, and they don’t cut important corners. Everything in the published framework has resulted from practical experience and successful application by the membership. This strongly practical approach leads many people to view the framework as being ‘just common sense’, but it is apparent to anyone trying to control agile developments just how uncommon ‘common sense’ can be.

Today, the framework is being used on a wide variety of projects, small and large, simple and complex, IT and non-IT, in many countries, and the consortium continues its work to refine the content of the framework. For instance, in June 2001, the consortium issued a version of DSDM specifically aimed at e-business projects where all the reasons for delivering quality systems quickly are possibly even more important. The basic framework underwent a significant update in the summer of 2001 and an incremental improvement was made in January 2002.

Given that we are predominantly building business systems with some IT content, the philosophy behind DSDM is simple:

u Development is a team effort. It must combine the customers’ knowledge of the business requirements with the technical skills of IT professionals.

u High quality demands fitness for purpose as well technical robustness.

u Development can be incremental — not everything has to be delivered at once, and delivering something earlier is often more valuable than delivering everything later.

u The law of diminishing returns applies — resources must be spent developing the features of most value to the business.

DSDM is about people, not tools. It is about truly understanding the needs of the business and delivering solutions that work — and delivering them as quickly and as cheaply as possible. The framework will not solve every project’s problems, but it will go a long way towards ensuring that the business gets the systems it needs in the twenty-first century.

What is DSDM?

The first questions to ask when coming to DSDM are what is it and why is it different? Despite its full name it is not a method in the accepted sense, but a framework of controls focused on delivering quickly, supplemented by guidance on how to apply those controls. It is a method in as much as it defines a process and a set of products, but these have been deliberately kept at a high level so that they can be tailored for any technical and business environment. There are no prescribed techniques but suggested paths are supplied for implementers of both structured and object-oriented approaches. It is different because it is possibly the only publicly available approach that covers all aspects of system development from the first idea for a project up to the final removal of the project’s solution. It addresses the needs of all project participants: business management, project managers, solution architects, solution developers, solution users, and quality assurance personnel.

DSDM describes project management, estimating, prototyping, timeboxing, configuration management, testing, quality assurance, roles and responsibilities (of both users and IT staff), team structures, tool environments, risk management, building for maintainability, reuse and vendor/purchaser relationships — all in a fast-moving, business-centered environment.

The purpose of the framework is to achieve rapid time to market: building what the business needs, when it needs it. If the system is to meet the business needs, then it must be sufficiently robust to be usable in the operational environment. Secondly, the immediate needs of the business can probably be met in the short term and allow for delivery of additional functionality later on.

A bit of history

Businesses are putting increasing pressures on their IT suppliers to deliver better systems, faster and cheaper. In today’s rapidly changing world, they are no longer able to wait for years for a system to be provided: the business may have changed radically during the years of development. It is imperative to find a different way of building IT systems. The technology that is now available to developers allows for more speedy production of systems but the answer lies not only in the use of tools. The whole process needs to change. The classical, waterfall lifecycle does not take full advantage of modern technology and does not facilitate the change that is inherent in all systems development. It has been around for about 40 years and is basically the solution to an old problem — that of not having a full understanding of the problem to be solved and not having a coherent approach to solving the problem before starting to code a solution.

The waterfall approach of a strict sequence of stages has been seen to be flawed for many years now. Several attempts have been made to move away from it, including Barry Boehm’s iterative style of development using a spiral model of planning, risk analysis, engineering, and customer evaluation. Though excellent, the spiral model did not achieve the penetration into IT practices that it deserved. The emergence in recent years of many ‘Agile’ methods proves the need for a different approach. While some, such as Extreme Programming, have gained wide acceptance they do not cover all aspects of a project and can leave an organization confused as to how to integrate the many solutions on offer. This provides one explanation for the less than optimal acceptance of agility as the way forward by the majority of IT solution providers. Another could be that, until recently, there has not been sufficient pressure from their customers.

In the early 1990s, the IT industry had become increasingly aware of Rapid Application Development following James Martin’s book Rapid Application Development, which gave some excellent pointers as to how to make the concept work, but did not provide the total solution. There are many tools on the market, but to use them often meant buying the vendor’s process as well. The founding members of the DSDM Consortium saw this as a block to the growth of successful and fast solution delivery.

The Consortium was inaugurated in January 1994 with the aim of producing a public domain, commonly agreed method which would be tool-independent. Ed Holt who chaired the Consortium for the first two years said that every organization that bought a RAD tool really needed a new process. DSDM aims to provide that process for building and maintaining systems that meet tight time constraints in a controlled project environment. The Consortium had 17 founder members who represented a mix of organizations that remains today: large IT vendors, smaller tool vendors, and user organizations of all sizes. The Consortium now has hundreds of members with established regional consortia in North America, Benelux, Sweden, France, and Denmark with interest growing in other countries, such as Australia, India, and China.

During 1994, the Consortium’s Technical Work Group put together the process and produced guidance material based on the experiences and best practices of Consortium members. A few components of the framework were original ideas from experts in particular areas, but most of them were tried and tested — but they had never been brought together as a cohesive approach.

After Version 1 of the framework was published early in 1995, an Early Adopter Programme was put in place to monitor the use of the framework in practice. After feedback from the Early Adopters and the addition of material that had been deliberately left out of Version 1 to get the framework visible as soon as possible, Version 2 was published in November 1995. Following feedback from the wider use of the framework, Version 3 was published in August 1997. Up until 2001 additions to the framework came via UK government White Papers on topics as diverse as using DSDM in data warehousing, component-based development and prototyping business processes. In 2000, it became clear that there was a need for a version of DSDM that was less generic in its definitions and specifically aimed at e-business projects. The technical work of the consortium continues: it is still collecting feedback from users of the framework, and addresses particular needs as they arise through the production of White Papers. A recent White Paper covers the use of UML in DSDM projects.

To ensure that the framework is well understood and applied correctly, a training and examination process was launched alongside Version 1 and continues to evolve. At the time of writing, over 20,000 people have been trained by accredited training providers and increasing numbers are going through the examination process to become certified DSDM Practitioners.

Overview of the framework

The whole framework is based on nine principles, which are discussed in more detail later on, but it is useful to list them here. The first four define the foundations on which DSDM is built and the other five provide the principles that have guided the structure of the framework.

1. Active user involvement is imperative.

2. DSDM teams must be empowered to make decisions.

3. The focus is on frequent delivery of products.

4. Fitness for business purpose is the essential criterion for acceptance of deliverables.

5. Iterative and incremental development is necessary to converge on an accurate business solution.

6. All changes during development are reversible.

7. Requirements are baselined at a high level.

8. Testing is integrated throughout the lifecycle.

9. A collaborative and co-operative approach between all stakeholders is essential.

All of these principles have been found to be necessary, if a quality system is to be supplied in the timescales required by the business.

The iterative and incremental process embodied in the fifth principle consists of five development phases. (There are two non-development phases: pre-project, which ensures that the project is set up on a sound basis, and post-project, which includes keeping the delivered solution operational.) The first two development phases are sequential: feasibility to assess the suitability of the system to the approach and to provide an initial view of the costs, etc., followed by the business study which builds the business and technical foundations of the rest of the project. After the business study, the first of the iterative phases is the functional model iteration in which the analysis started in the business study is done in more detail. The analysis is supported by evolutionary prototyping of functionality inside the system architecture that is also defined at a high level in the business study. When an area of functionality is well enough understood, the design and build iteration engineers the system component to sufficient quality to be delivered in the implementation phase. Implementation covers not only moving the system to the production environment but also training the users. At the end of implementation, the increment is reviewed and a business decision is made about what further work (if any) needs to be done in subsequent increments.

No process is complete without the people to enact it. The first principle states that the solution’s users must be closely involved throughout development: their regular input and feedback are essential to the framework. DSDM defines roles for the people involved in a DSDM project. These include both users and development staff. For example, one user role is that of Visionary. This is usually taken by the person who is responsible for getting the project started through their vision for IT support in the business area. A key IT role is that of Technical Co-ordinator, who is basically the system architect and keeper of the technical vision. The combination of these two roles ensures the business and technical foundations of the project are secure, but there are many more roles defined in both areas of specialism.

The aim of DSDM is to deliver systems to timescales that would be impossible using the waterfall approach. The impact is that the work processes have to be managed in a different way and the techniques used within those processes need to be honed down to reduce overheads as much as possible. The major instrument for controlling work is the timebox. The timebox in DSDM is a short period of time (a matter of days or a few weeks) within a project when something is produced to defined quality objectives, so satisfying the third, fourth, and eighth principles. By taking a product-based view rather than an activity-based view of process, DSDM allows the controls to be focused on what is produced rather than the method of production. This enables a flexible approach to be taken to the techniques used within the framework.

Application of the sixth principle of reversible change means that everything that is produced must be controlled sufficiently well in order to move back to a known state when any product proves to be wrong.

So DSDM is about controlling a style of development that is often viewed as a way of producing unmaintainable systems. It keeps a firm focus on satisfying the business needs rather than IT’s perception of them. The application of DSDM’s user-centered, iterative, and incremental approach results in many benefits. As has been proven on thousands of projects, these include:

u the users are more likely to take ownership of the system;

u the risk of building the wrong system is reduced;

u the final system is more likely to meet the users’ real business requirements;

u the users will be better trained;

u the system implementation is more likely to go more smoothly.

Why is DSDM more rapid than the waterfall?

DSDM produces ‘industrial strength’ systems that meet users’ needs and are fully extendible and maintainable over long periods of time — they are not one-off or throwaway. In business terms, they are the exact peer of good systems developed by the waterfall approach, but take a lot less time to develop.

There are two main reasons. Less is actually done. There is much less time spent in briefing people, and bringing them repeatedly up to speed. Little time is lost through task-switching by users or developers. Most importantly of all, only the features that are needed are actually developed.

The second reason is that problems, misunderstandings and false directions are identified and corrected early, so avoiding the massive rewrites often required late in waterfall projects. This has a further benefit. The resultant code developed under DSDM is consistent and of a piece, whereas waterfall code, by the end of the project, is often already patched and out of synchrony with its documentation. The result is that DSDM-delivered code is also easier to maintain.

About this book

While the online manual is obviously the first port of call when the framework needs to be understood in depth, it is necessarily focused on what the framework contains rather than stories and comments on how the framework has been used in varying environments. The first edition of DSDM: The Method in Practice was commissioned by the DSDM Consortium to provide a practical rather than theoretical view of the framework. It is now out of date since both the framework and the world in which the framework is used have moved on. Alongside the evolution of the framework, organizations are using it for many more types of project than it was originally designed, from business process change programs to advertising campaigns. This book will focus on application development projects but one case study shows the use of DSDM in a non-IT program.

Part I offers an overview of the framework as described in the online manual but more importantly it contains anecdotes and information from real projects. Part II contains some case studies that have been provided by participants in the projects described. They cover what their authors felt were important aspects of their projects. They are definitely a miscellany, being of varying lengths and of varying depth of description, but we hope that you will find something of value in each one. Part III provides information about how to contact the consortium, how to become a member, and how to access the resources of the consortium. In Part IV you can read about the birth of the Agile manifesto and find out where to go next.

About the Agile Software Development series

The Agile Software Development series highlights effective light, human-powered development techniques, based on two core ideas:

u Different projects need different processes or methodologies.

u Focusing on skills, communication, and community allows the project to be more agile and effective than focusing on processes.

Two books anchor the Agile Software Development series:

u Agile Software Development (Cockburn, 2002) describes the economic and psychological principles underlying agile development. It introduces two ideas, that a methodology is the set of conventions a development team agrees to adopt, and that systems and software development is fruitfully viewed as a resource-constrained co-operative game of invention and communication. From those views and principles, practitioners can select and personalize an agile approach for their local situation.

u Agile Software Development Ecosystems (Cockburn, 2002) describes the people behind the Agile Software Development Manifesto (http://agilemanifesto.org), the methodologies they developed, and experiences in using agile techniques.

The series has three tracks:

u Techniques to improve the effectiveness of a person who is doing a particular sort of job. This might be a person who is designing a user interface, gathering requirements, planning a project, designing, or testing. Whoever is performing such a job will want to know how the best people in the world do their jobs. Writing Effective Use Cases (Cockburn, 2001), Configuration Management Principles and Practices (Hass, 2002), and GUIs with Glue (Hohmann, in preparation) are technique books.

u Techniques to improve the effectiveness of a group of people. These might include techniques for team-building, project retrospectives, decision-making, or running effective meetings. Improving Software Organizations (Mathiassen, 2001) and Surviving Object-Oriented Projects (Cockburn 1998) are two group technique books.

u Examples of successful methodologies. Whoever is selecting a methodology will want to find one that has been successfully used in a similar situation. Personalizing that methodology will be easier than creating a new one from scratch and is more effective than using one that was designed for a different situation. This DSDM book and Crystal Clear (Cockburn, in preparation) are descriptions of tried methodologies.

You can find resources about DSDM and agile development on the Web. Specific sites and topics are included in the References at the back. A starter set includes these sites:

u www.DSDM.org is the home site for the DSDM Consortium, with news and leads to other resources.

u www.AgileAlliance.org describes the activities of the non-profit organization the AgileAlliance, and has links to agile development discussion groups around the world.

u www.Alistair.Cockburn.us/crystal holds a growing library of papers, sample work products and agile processes, and a discussion area for agile development topics.

Discovery at Rosetta: The Stone that Unlocked the Mysteries of Ancient Egypt, by Jonathan Downs

The gripping tale of the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, the artifact that opened up ancient Egypt and triggered a struggle for cultural supremacy. One fateful day in 1799, a unit of French army engineers made a discovery that opened the floodgates of history, rousing the gods of the Nile after two thousand years. In a crumbling castle on the banks of the Nile, the engineers found an unusual chunk of dark, chiseled debris. It was the Rosetta Stone, and it would change civilization forever.Discovery of Rosettais the first book to tell the story of the Rosetta Stone—how it fell into British hands, the battle over who would be the first to successfully decipher it, and how it came to sit where it is today, in the British Museum. The Rosetta Stone is much more than a rock—it is the key to an ancient civilization and a modern symbol of human discovery, conquest, and scholarship.

From Publishers Weekly
This latest recounting of the 1799 discovery of the Rosetta Stone—the key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics—focuses less on the decoding itself and more on the French invasion of Egypt that led to the discovery and the military and cultural battle with Britain that followed. British military historian Downs tells an engrossing story full of larger-than-life and sometimes simply wacky characters, led to Egypt by Napoleon. Among them were dozens of scholars, artists and scientists who produced an explosion of knowledge on both ancient Egyptian and later Islamic culture. The invasion itself ended in disaster when Admiral Nelson's armada destroyed the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile. Napoleon returned to France; his army, left to wither from heat, disease and deprivation, surrendered to Britain in 1801. Much of the book concerns clumsy French efforts to avoid turning over their artifacts, including the Rosetta stone, to the victors. Downs takes an original tack to this well-known story with a straightforward, dramatic account of the 1,500-pound stone from its discovery until its arrival at the British Museum, where it rests today. Making history sexy
By G. Carse
I was told of this book by a friend who kept raving about how brilliant it was.

However, being someone who absolutely hated history in school, I didn't imagine being able to share his enthusiasm. And so, I must confess I felt more than a little reticent when he then handed me the book and virtually demanded that I at least give it a go. Resigning myself to my fate, I began to read:

"Somewhere out to sea," the book began, "bearing down furiously upon the swelling coast of Egypt, came an invasion fleet sent by the greatest power in the East."

And from there I was hooked. This was clearly no dry history lesson like the ones I was forced to read at school, this was written in the style of a fast-paced and gripping novel, each chapter ending with a "hook" to drag you on to the next. And, again like a novel, it had its heroes and villains, only in this case nothing was being made up; all the facts presented had been meticulously researched and dramatically depicted. In short, this had all the elements of a Bernard Cornwell novel but with one added advantage - it was all true.

Without wishing to give too much away (and thereby depriving you of the chance to enjoy it for yourself), the book covers Bonaparte's invasion of Egypt in 1798 and how, amidst the smoke of the Napoleonic battles, came the serendipitous discovery of an ancient artifact that would later act as the key to unlocking the ancient language of the Egyptians. For it was in the small naval town of Rosetta that one of the greatest archeological finds since the discovery of Troy was uncovered, just a slab of basalt with strange writing on it, but writings that would ultimately lead to the opening of the floodgates of history, "reviving the gods of the Nile after two thousand years of their patient, megalithic meditation."

A highly enjoyable read. Well recommended.

Terrific story hampered by poor Kindle font
By B. Scott Andersen
This is a terrific story told about one of the most significant discoveries of our time. My trouble with the work is the non-standard font used to produce the book on the Kindle. (If you're reading this review about a version not on the Kindle, kindly ignore the commentary on the electronic formatting.) The font selected is thin and does not render well on the eInk display. It is probably the same font used for the printed edition, which probably looks great on paper, but it is frustratingly unreadable on the Kindle.

The story of the French adventure in Egypt, the English driving them out, and of the science and discovery is terrific. If not for the horrendous typography I could wholeheartedly recommend this book to anybody fascinated with hieroglyphics, Egyptology, or the state of science in the 19th century.

It is a great story poorly presented.
