Good Points: I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to be successful as a farmer in the long run. It is a book you will delve into again and again. It provides motivational material to inspire people to enter the noble profession of farming. It provides multiple viewpoints to explain how plant growth can be positively enhanced. It is controversial - in that it explains why today's farming is flawed and consequently why farmers are going out of business. While the concepts can be complex to understand, the book provides stimulating reference material to guide the willing agricultural professional to transform agriculture into a sustainable and profitable business. I am motivated to put into practice measurement systems advised in relation to crop and soil testing. Also to feed the soil system with the balanced minerals required to improve the quality of crops produced. This in turn transforms the economics of farming for the future.
Bad Points: Some of the science and theory is quite complex to understand. Nevertheless there is a good reference list provided for the earnest reader to fill these gaps.

Contains lots of completely inaccessible information

Teachers, why do you continue to choose texts that are this terrible? Do you want to drive students away? Are you trying to crush their spirits early because you think it will make them invulnerable to the drudgery of later life? Please stop. You're hurting us.

The review: The book itself is basically a collection of IC data sheets loosely strung together with the connective thread of digital logic. But it's just a thread. Accessible writing is about the last thing on these authors' minds as they happily fill page after page with circuit diagrams, often for no apparent reason at all. This book would be half the size and twice as easy to read if 90% of the data sheets had been omitted.

Concepts, even simple ones, are often explained poorly. Examples of these concepts are not always provided, but when they are it is often in a different part of the chapter. The book is utterly useless for independent study.

The questions at the end of sections are also largely useless because the solutions manual is only accessible to teachers. Why? Because I guess checking your work and comparing your methods to someone with more experience isn't the way engineering happens anymore.

There is only one positive aspect to this book: it actually works quite well as a reference. If your teacher is very good at explaining concepts (as mine was) and takes the time to go over many examples in class, then this book can act as an excellent reference for looking up particular design principles via the appendix. This makes doing independent lab work useful and gives the book some shelf life it wouldn't have otherwise.

If you're looking to learn from the book, to teach yourself or to even have something in a classroom that makes teaching easier then stay away. If you want a book that provides vast amounts of information to act as a lab reference manual for concepts and design principles, this might not be a bad choice.

Great Book!

I am second year student in Electrical Engineering. I used the book to prepare for my Digital Design exam last semester. Passed with almost 100% :)

Now I read the book for a second time, expecially the last chapters. I think this is a great book if you want to understand the basics of the Digital D&A.

You will find almost everything, from basic boolean algreba to CPLD and FPGA structure and functions. The explanations are very clear with a lot of graphics.

In conclusion: This is a TOP 1 Book for everyone who enters (and not only) the amazing world of Digital D&A. I can only recommend it.

An Okay Book

Good book for basic car repair knowledge but it definitely a little dated. For example, the section on replacing an air filter shows the circular compartment and filter although they do mention the "newer" air filters that are now very common. My favorite is the page on how to wash your hands.

I use this book more as a reference book to look up routine maintenance procedures. Book can be very technical; it is not for light reading.. This is a real good book for someone who is more knowledgeable/interested in auto mechanics (as well as physics).

A book that truly teaches -- Not just for Dummies

To start, I wrote an 11,000 line program several years ago in C/Carbon. It drew graphics to the screen, did a lot of math in the background, and had ample buttons and menus. It was clear to me about 4 years ago that I had to rewrite the program in Obj-C/Cocoa if Apple was going to support the underlying code. So I bought several Obj-C books, including the leading two, to learn the new language. I worked all of the examples and thought that I knew something about objective programming. My biggest disappointments occurred when I would put the books down for a week and then start again. I really didn't know what I was doing except memorizing the examples. I just could not see the larger context or advantage of Obj-C. Something wasn't sticking with me.

Mr. Goldstein takes a very different approach from other programming books. His first example is a program that keeps tracks of spending while traveling in Europe. It is a classical C-program with a single C-struct. From this easy starting point each chapter changes only 2 or 3 things to make this simple example more and more object oriented as an Obj-C code. Each change is carefully explained. The mathematics of the spending program never really change so that is one less complication. In the last chapters the simple example is expanded to an app just to show how simple things can be.

Along the way Mr. Goldstein introduces the whole collection of NSObjects. This time, however, I understood how each step toward an object oriented code increases the generality of the code so that it can easily be modified in the future. Finally, I saw the whole forest instead of individual trees, and I can remember learnings from week to week. Now I use the two leading Obj-C books as references, but the Dummies book is always opened first.

dont buy

a terrible book. Im am a novice at coding, but i could only make it to chapter 5. The book is not concise and clear most of the time. Its wordy for no purpose. It also seemed to have errors, such as talking about function and things that we never crated and using different names. The other thing is that all the variables he used have ridiculously stupid names that can allow you to get confused easily. Don't waste your money.

All-in-all great for those who have no or very little object-oriented programming experience. Regardless of what authors claim, some basic understanding of programming logic is essential.

However, with the release of Xcode 5, some chapters are getting outdated.

Young teen dealing with mother's illness

Diana Lopez's ASK MY MOOD RING HOW I FEEL tells about how Erica (Chia) Montenegro and her family cope when her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. Erica is a middle-school student, so she is certainly old enough to realize that this is a life-changing event for their family, whether her mother goes into remission, then cure, or not. However, she wants what "normal" middle school girls want, particularly fun times with friends and a boyfriend. Her "normal" friends don't understand these mixed emotions; hence, this work's title. Her father becomes very protective of her mother; Erica often takes charge of her younger sibling's care.

Erica and her family are from Texas, so they journey to a shrine in South Texas where many families like hers have sought help. She makes a promesa to the Virgin Mary that she will sign up five hundred people to sponsor her in a Race for the Cure event. Sometimes it seems to Erica that everything is going against her keeping this promise, but she keeps her courage.

Read and see whether - and how - Erica can keep her promesa and how her mother does! Granted, sometimes the answer to prayers and promesas isn't what we want, but at least Erica is making an effort to do some good - if not for her mom, for others.

I found this to be a very honest story of a young girl coping with cancer in her family. The actions, style and word choice are wonderful for the characters and the setting.

Teens who are in a similar situation and their friends will truly appreciate this book and say, "Yes! That's me!" when they see Erica's roller-coaster of emotions.

An excellent book for a preteen/teenage girl

An excellent book for a preteen/teenage girl. The idea behind it is that she's feeling so many emotions that she needs a mood ring to keep track of all of them. She experiences everything from happiness, to jealousy and even her mom being diagnosed with cancer. She makes a promise to God in exchange for her moms help and this book is a story of her journey to make sense of everything and make it through. Cute story, my child loved it!

A total surprise for me!

Ask My Mood Ring How I Feel was another book I wasn't sure I wanted to read. This wonderful book came with another book that I had requested and I wasn't planning on including it with the Best of 2013 Middle Grade reads until I read it ~ it wasn't at all what I was expecting.

This book opens with your typical, everyday 7th grade, hyper boy vigilent teen ager focused on what all little 7th grade girls are aware of. You have boy/clothes/when am I going to reach the "close encounter of the #1, 2, 3 or 4th degree (involving boys - but you already figured that out right?)" crazy girls (plus one boy in their group who is just starting to be aware of Erica and she hasn't a clue (of course).

But then Erica's life changes - her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. I was very pleased with how the author didn't brush over the subject, worked through Erica's emotions, her dad's worry about his wife and Erica's little sister's almost OCD counting and need to clean. There is a LOT of information, emotions and kids are given some tools they can use with major events in their lives. Most of all I loved how Erica stepped forward and helped around the house - taking care of the cleaning and her little brother as best as a 13 year old can. In many ways she took over much of the organizing of their home - and the resulting consequence would be eye opening for kids & their families.

I was very impressed with this book all around. The only thing I was a little un-impressed about was the parents in the book take the kids to a "shrine" where people make promises to the "Virgen de San Juan del Valle" in order to heal the people in their lives. The parents in the book take the kids there and have their kids make a promesa but of course don't do a good job of making sure the girls understand that nothing they do can heal their mother. Instead of putting their fear and trust in God they turn to promises, the Virgin Mary and works to hopefully heal their mom.

Parents should take the time to read the book first or at least read it with their daughters. Talk about how God is there to support us and while He can heal us sometimes he doesn't choose to. Talk about how we can help others, support and encourage each other and how we can let our friends know we are there if they need us. I would of LOVED to see a list of discussion questions with this book. It's outstanding and should be on each library shelf & in each school.

There is a strong hispanic presence in this book and you'll find some cultural references throughout the book, not just in language, but in religion and this provides a great opportunity to discuss cultural differences and different beliefs and thoughts as well.

About the Author
Bruce and Ju-Chan Fulton are the translators of numerous volumes of contemporary Korean fiction, including Trees on a Slope by Hwang Sun-wōn and The Dwarf by Cho Se-hui, both published by University of Hawai'i Press. Bruce Fulton is the inaugural holder of the Young-Bin Min Chair in Korean Literature and Literary Translation in the Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia.

Ju-Chan Fulton is, with Bruce Fulton, the cotranslator of The Dwarf by Cho Se-hui and Trees on a Slope by Hwang Sun-won.

compelling and creative story

This is a really excellent book, whether one thinks of it as a single novel or a connection of closely interconnected stories. The movement among different characters is subtle and imaginative, and the different perspectives are illuminating. One strength of the book is the interesting window it provides on Korean society in the midst of wrenching industrialization, but in my mind this is linked to the book's only real weakness as well: we don't really need the gross details of the degradation of the human and natural environment, or the soaring rhetoric of those defending the workers against the evil capitalists, rubbed in our faces quite so explicitly. Overall, though, I recommend this book highly. Related recommendations: The Old Garden, by Hwang Sok-yong, and Words of Farewell: Stories by Korean Women Writers, edited by Sok-Kyong Chi-Won & Chong-Hui.

It's really a great novel. In terms of style and structure

It's really a great novel.

In terms of style and structure, the things Cho Se-hui does are incredibly innovative (for the 80's) and compelling. This novel will hit you emotionally when you don't expect it. Some passages are dialogue heavy with terse prose, and some passages spend several pages giving detailed descriptions or explanations. A few pages are even written in the style of a script, as if for a play. Though the writing doesn't have one consistent form or voice throughout the novel, instead of distracting from Cho Se-hui's message, this usage of multiple voices creates a much more three-dimensional view of the story portrayed and enhances the story.

A must read for those studying Korean lit.for sure, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone else who likes good books.

An incredible document revealing decades of experimentation

While there have been many great, as well as illuminating, books on the subject of Polaroid technology, as well as the innovative culture that thrived within the company, this book is singular in that it sheds light on the years and years of artistic experimentation that put the cameras to excellent use. From the essays to the reproductions, you get a vivid sense of how artists utilized and exploited the technology to create and interpret. While not all the artwork is amazing, the book stands as a document of how art pushed technology into greatness, and vice versa.

Very Interesting Review of the Development of, Experimentation with and Foray into the World of Art

I was a Polaroid user for a number of years. My only regret is that I started too late, just after the SX-70, although I did use SX-70 film packs (with an exposure adjustment) in my Polaroid SLR600. I am also an amateur artist, and manipulated many instant prints to accentuate certain portions, and was saddened when I could no longer obtain the materials. In any case, I found the book fascinating, especially since the developments over the years, relying on chemical and mechanical innovations without the (not then available) use of advanced electronics and computers, managed to do what they did. And it was rewarding to read of the development of the large 20x24 and the very large "closet sized" cameras. I have seen the results of these mammoth devices and they are amazing. A very good read!
