Great linguistic book for teachers

Freeman & Freeman have hit a great niche with their book. I don't want or need, a complex linguistics book in the style of Chomsky. Freeman & Freeman take language research and package the relevant "real-world" findings so they will be of use for teachers. Although my interest is for English as a Second (ESL) teachers, I believe every teacher is concerned with literacy, and Freeman & Freeman's book covers what teachers need to know concerning phonics v. whole word instruction, spelling, and grammar. Freeman & Freeman seem to belong to the Stephen Krashen school of language and reading. This is a plus for me, but for Krashen-haters, it probably wouldn't be, and they should look elsewhere. This is "baby" linguistics book--you won't get a section on Chomsky's generative grammar here. I think it would be a good companion volume along with VanPatten's "From Input to Output"--which is a slim volume solely concerned with second language acquisition and has the same conversational tone--and--this is important--their teaching advice and philosophy meshes.

Good if you are a staunch whole language believer

I picked up this book from a university bookstore because I was interested in background knowledge in linguistics to help guide reading instruction. This book is a typical "we are right (whole language) and you are wrong (phonics)" debate. The authors refer to themselves as "sociopsycholinguists" which I took to be the new term for whole language teachers. I don't want to waste my time reading about the whole language vs. phonics debate anymore, I just wanted the research and background provided by linguistic study. This book just seemed to be a rehashing of whole language theories; and why they are correct and the phonics approach is wrong with little classroom strategies (which is what I wanted from the book). I wanted different ways I could use to help struggling readers no matter what the theory, I don't feel this was a good book for that.

This is a textbook?

Not really impressed with this book. It was a required text and I've been disappointed in it's content. When discussing the why we use sound to communicate, the best the authors could come up with is "..to talk in the dark and to talk around corners." The authors present stronger material in working with ELL students but weak on linguistics. As a textbook, this a bad choice as a teaching source. The up & coming ELL teachers should look for other material.

I recently finished reading Pick Me and really learned a lot from it. I am currently attending a school to build my portfolio in copywriting and felt that reading this book was like attending a whole new school, learning things that I would not have learned in my current school. I highly recommend this book to those trying to break into the industry. Although I'm not there yet, I feel like I'm that much closer after reading this book.

Brief insight to a complicated field

I'd give it more of a 3.5. Lots of practical advice about making it in the field. Only reason it scored lower is because it could've benefitted a little more samples and some more advertising resouces like the RedBook and such. Easy read.

About the Author

Alan Weiss, Ph.D., founder of the Summit Consulting Group, Inc., is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Press Institute and an inductee into the Professional Speaking Hall of Fame. He has also been named a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants. Hard to Top Alan's "Million Dollar Consulting"

These books are basically 2nd tier, in that they take points addressed in decent detail in "Million Dollar Consulting", "The "Consulting Bible", and "Getting Started in Consulting", books I have rated as 5 stars and still do, and expand upon them. This expansion seems more to get enough material to write a new book, than to provide a lot more value-added material. I don't view them as a waste of money, because the expanded information provides additional supporting information from the author's viewpoint. But most of us are able to arrive at similar conclusions by thinking about the points in his highly rated books above, rather than gaining any new or major benefits from "fill in the blank" excercises, added tables, charts and experiences. For the beginning consultant, these may fill more of a need than I saw.

A treasure trove of insights and wisdom to grow your business

I found "Million Dollar Referrals" incredibly helpful for my consulting practice. I've read several books by Alan Weiss, but I found this one to have a ton of new information not found in his other works. I implemented his advice and immediately saw results!

This book helped me realize why referrals are so valuable and how to secure them quickly, efficiently, and effectively. If your business is struggling to grow or you've hit a plateau, then you're probably not mining for referrals enough. Alan will show you how to rectify the problem, regardless of your personality type, customer base, or consulting experience.

One of the best parts about this book is how Alan provides a lot of sample language and scripts that you can use to gather referrals. You can use some of his language word-for-word, or adapt it to your specific situation. But, this information gets you moving faster and is worth the purchase alone.

Frankly, I find this book helpful not just for consultants, but for anyone in a service-based business. Get a copy today, because you will easily recoup the purchase price of this book many times over. I'm quite thankful that Alan made this important information available.

Newest Brilliant Work By Weiss. One Of The Best On Referrals

I teach salespeople how to sell. So I've read every book on gaining referrals and contacting them. The two I recommend are this book by Alan Weiss and Beyond Referrals by Bill Cates. Beyond Referrals: How to Use the Perpetual Revenue System to Convert Referrals into High-Value Clients The advantage I see in this book, is that Weiss gives you powerful positioning dialog, and shows you how to almost force referrals to take your appointment. Very professional, very ethical very powerful.. I strongly recommend this book to my clients.

Weiss is a consultant, and it shows in this book. His books on Consulting are even a more in depth read. And some of that information bleeds into this book. But you'll be using a yellow highlighter a lot, I guarantee it.
