Sanity doesn't stand a chance with Abel on your mind.. Perfect balance of dark & soulful..

From the first moment that I laughed out loud in chapter one, I KNEW this book will be one of those that I wouldn't be able to get over..

Have you ever started a book and felt straight away that the writing style was you? It just resonated so well with your own thoughts and POV that it was THAT easy to fall in love with it? Or that the story seemed to be heartbreaking, dark and sexy but funny at the same time? These are all some of the endless addictive qualities of READY, WILLING AND ABEL.

A girl that is too stressed and freaked out after she realizes what she thinks she isn't without a doubt not ready for: to become a mum. 13 pregnancy tests later she is at a breaking point of continuously telling herself that this could not be happening.. That it should not happen, least of all to her.. and just thinking about who was at the receiving end of this, only ever builds up a stronger headache..

Abel. A character that no matter what he says or does after his first chapter of being introduced to us, I will inhale every word that is his. It sounds weird I know, but just from seeing how he was describing Patience and his feelings for her, not to mention everyone else in his life, it kind of made me feel at ease with him? I felt like I could trust his own point of view no matter what. THAT type of connection with a fictional character is so damn hard to find, but Abel was just.. ugh.. I can't explain it but I loved everything that he stood for. I wont even start on his drool worthy sexy as hell looks or his dirty mind or even his bad boy attitude (mainly towards Patience) that I could only ever envy when it comes to those plain boys that find their way in my life. Sigh.. All those reality issues when getting engrossed with PERFECT fictional men.. Double Sigh.

The story is both dark, dealing with what happened with Abel's family and his extended family but also with how he always wishes that he would have been able to do something for the person who shot her.. It clearly wasn't a death shot but Abel still felt so much rage towards Tanner that he himself mentioned he would bring him back from his grave JUST so he could do some more damage.. That side shows an extremely important example in the way his feelings for her are anything but simple..

Patience regrets that night she spent with Abel 3 years ago but even worse she "hates" that she saw him once again a little while ago.

Now. She has no other choice but to live with her "mistakes".. though we do get to witness a relationship that grows so strongly, I could only wish that it was real. Abel doesn't know about Patience secret of their little one and once he finds out? There better be mercy for the wrath to unfold when a man claims HIS girl and is looking to repair the damage he caused..

Before, it was about them and only them. Their feelings, emotions, thoughts, desires.. NOW. Now they have another life that needs attention..

What will they do? What could possibly happen when 2 souls who are already too tainted to be fixed are brought back together?

Patience is anything but what her name suggests. Sassy, with an attitude, knows what she wants, isn't scared to stand up to him, and is now scared of what her life and the growing one she carries, will end up as..

Abel is the cocky, alpha male, with a sexy attitude to match his god like features but he has a heart of gold, especially when it comes to her.

She is his weakness, she always has been. But can he ever prove to her how much she means to him? Will she forgive and accept him?

There were so many twist and turns, so many bumps and even more emotional breakdowns. I loved every aspect of this gorgeous story. It was dark but that part was balanced out but the humor, it was also sexy as sin but heartfelt at the same time.. In few words, READY, WILLING AND ABEL was everything that you wish it was but more unexpected in only the best way possible!

Thank you so much Sarah O'Rourke for the ARC!! I haven't read the first 2 books in this series and even thought I know this particular one is a standalone, I am one clicking the others!!! I NEED more and more there shall be. Until next time, please create more Abel's... at least one extra so I can have my very own.. Uh yeah. You guys will understand my "normal self" once you see for yourself how sane you WONT be when delving into the world occupied by Abel.. You have been warned!

who unfortunately does not favour her namesake but is the ultimate bad girl with a heart

There were so many elements of this story that made me instantly recall all of those fabulous sixties Doris Day and Rock Hudson romances; the witty repartee, the aggressive banter that borderlines on overt flirtation, the comedic timing and ridiculous and hilarious circumstances or problems that occurred-except in Ready, Willing and Abel we have a very sexy, very dominant heterosexual hero in the form of attorney Abel Turner and an incredibly potty mouthed and fierce heroine in the shape of one Patience McKinnon, who unfortunately does not favour her namesake but is the ultimate bad girl with a heart.

Sarah O'Rourke is a pseudonym, comprised of two very talented and very funny authors who, not only manage to grasp the importance of sexual chemistry in their lead characters but also that a fabulous support system in the form of the McKinnon family women and their better halves can bring out the best in a story. They manage to bring forth some of the best sex scenes I've ever read in a novel and the next time the fair comes to town I DEFINITELY have to try my hand at the type of Ferris Wheel shenanigans these two get up to. Oh. My. Lord! Scorching.

The great thing about Sarah's books, is that they are consistently chock full of drama, hysterics, suspense, fantastic and imaginative sex scenes and that all important element of love and spark of passion. And what a love story this one is. One night of unbridled passion that has a startling and positive effect on the feuding Patience and Abel's lives. Patience was awesome and just as complex and fierce and independent as always and Abel was utterly incredible, he had so much passion and fight in him and love for his wee 'hellion'. I'm absolutely dying for Honor and Zeke's story and I hope there are a few other characters going to get their own book too but this is seriously one series that I have loved and admired and become addicted to.

This is the third book in the series but can be read as a standalone.
Patience is the complete opposite of her name, she's full of sass and mouthy. She is not at all patient for anyone. She falls for the sexy Abel but he screws everything up. Three years later Abel's still trying to prove and show himself to the one woman he cares about. To do that though he'll have to knock all the walls Patience has up and that's not going to be a easy job.They are complete opposites, so this leads to some fighting in this love hate relationship. After one night together their lives change forever and as a reader I was drawn in and couldn't stop reading!
This book has the perfect blend of laughter, drama, and will capture your attention from beginning to the very end. I recommend this as well as going to the other books in series as well. You will not be disappointed.

Joanne B. Ciulla is Professor and Coston Family Chair in Leadership and Ethics in The Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond.

Clancy Martin is Professor and Chair of Philosophy and Professor of Business Ethics in the Bloch School at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

The late Robert C. Solomon was the Quincy Lee Centennial Professor of Business and Philosophy and Distinguished Teaching Professor at The University of Texas at Austin.

Too academic

As I presume this reader is intended to be used in business ethics and related applied ethics courses, I have to say it simply tries to cover too much. Featuring 115 articles and 89 "cases" (which can be used either for the purpose of homework or in-class assignments), this book endeavors too provide an overview of ethical problems and dilemmas that students might face in their prospective work environments. Integrating new material on technology, hedge funds and derivatives, and the future of the free market, this third edition of "Honest Work" updates the previous one by adding 16 new readings and 9 provocative new cases. "Honest Work" may be used for undergraduate, graduate, and executive business ethics courses, and by anyone who wants to think about the challenges involved in being good and doing well in business; however, it will most likely be used in undergraduate courses. The readings try to cover seemingly ALL aspects of business ethics, some of which are rather esoteric (e.g., the hip section on ethics and technology that begins with Locke on property??), under a puzzling (because business people typically think of the good life in very different, more rigid terms than academic philosophers) overarching theme of the good life -- what it means personally, what it means for business, and what it means for society.

Here's what's new to third edition of "Honest Work": More discussion questions have been added to each article and chapter to help provoke further conversation in the classroom; Ch. 11 on international business has been updated to reflect emerging ways of thinking about globalization; Ch. 15 on the future of the free market has been updated with discussions on the nature of the market and fairness in light of the financial crisis; Ch. 1, on ethics in the workplace, contains several new articles such as Harry J. Van Buren's "Boundaryless Careers and Employability Obligations," which address the problems of employment in a difficult and uncertain job market.

Despite the large number of "cases", I suspect that the majority of business students will not get much out of all this material. This is because the book is pervaded by the current specialization fetish that is sucking life out of the humanities and the academy more generally. "Applied" philosophical topics have become "hot" in recent years, where "hot" means desired by a small, cloistered, ivory tower, elitist, student-hating, tenure-worshipping culture, and "applied" means a genre distinguishable only by this small group for the purpose of having a new category of publications which, despite its moniker, has little or no actual relevance to their subjects or arguments being applied outside the classroom. As an example, like many business readers that purport to be "practical" (whatever that means), "Honest Work" has a section on the morality of insider trading. Isn't the very notion of "the morality of insider trading" quite odd? I say it's odd because it seems to me that in reality anyone who deliberates about insider trading doesn't do so on the basis of morality. Rather, their deliberation and what they ultimately do will be based mainly on the consequences of, and the professional and social stigmatization that comes with, VIOLATING THE LAW. Indeed, it seems to me that in practice it isn't a moral issue at all, and that morality won't even cross their minds. However, from the point of view of an academic whose job is just to think and write about these issues from a distance, it may appear to be a real moral issue; and an academic may rationalize that it is in fact a real moral issue if they need to beef up their CV for the purpose of a merit or tenure, or if they just need something to do. Of course the relationship between law and morality is a real philosophical question; but it's a more abstract, more speculative, more traditional philosophical question which, because it has these qualities, always gets divorced from these "applied" discussions.

At the end of the day, so many specialized topics are covered and the book contains so much information that, instead of appealing to a wide readership in the business community, it seems to me "Honest Work" will turn business people away and again appeal mainly to academics.

About the Author
Mike Pearson is Professor of Performance Studies in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. From 1981-1997 he was Artistic Director of the Welsh theatre company Brith Gof (whose work was featured in Site-Specific Art, (2000)). Michael Shanks is Professor of Classics and Cultural Anthropology at Stanford University. He is one of the world's foremost archaeological thinkers, and author of many works including Experiencing the Past, Classical Archaeology of Greece (1996), and Art and the Greek City State (1999).

Whither Asean

Nariten has not written a well-balanced book on Asean especially with regards to solving its economic cooperation problems. He has tried to provide a good framework on what it takes for Asean to do in the face of the onslaught from India and China.
He might be too pessimistic at times regarding the future of the organisation. But looking back at the past achievements of Asean, he certainly cannot be blamed for this pessimism. Writing from an outsider point of view, Narine at times has depended too much on secondary material. He could have done better by interviewing the practioners of Asean economic cooperation, both the diplomats and businessmen in order to make the book even better.
On the whole the book looks like a PhD thesis that it was derived from and the chapters at times lack continuity.
The history of Asean economic cooperation have been better covered by others before and Narine rather than just simply condemning the Asean concept of cooperation could have come up with concretet proposals on how the problems that have engulfed Asean economic cooperation be resolved. A better comparative study will be how Asean compared to SAARC.
Narine should spent more time in SEA and see for himself how the economies that were in a mess just 6 years ago are once again as the dynamo of Asian economic growth.
Pessimism is well-placed at times especially with Asean economic cooperation but that must not deter away from the fact that a lot has been achieved Asean over the last 40 years when even the countries in the association were not even sure of the state of their nationhood.
Narine therefore failed on this score to highlight the achievement while at the same indulging too much on its weaknesses. The day when a similar third world grouping is at par with Asean then only a book can be written to rubbish this SEA organisation.

Excellent practical reference for the serious pilot

Mountain Flying Bible is not intended to teach you how to fly, but rather all of the things you will learn *after* you get your private pilot certificate. Think of it as an opportunity to leverage Sparky (his real name) Imeson's >10000 hours of experience flying small planes in the mountains. (And if that isn't enough qualification, Imeson's won the Northwest CFI of the year three times.) For flatlanders, when you see "mountain," substitute "extremes," because this is really what you'll get: flying the airplane at the corner of the performance envelope.
This is a terrific book because it's laid out in five sections representing the phases of flight: preflight, takeoff, en route, arrival and landings. Each section is divided further into logical subcategories of things one needs to know during that phase of flight.
Each page is chock full of information and there are hundreds of "rules of thumb." Also supplementing the text are some excellent photographs providing a visual picture often missing in other texts. For example, the En Route section shows you how difficult power lines across canyons are to see. Coming straight at it, you *can't* see the lines, but when you're right over them, you can.
The arrival and landing section shows how unusual some fo the runways can look. Included are sight pictures of Big Creek and Indian Creek(ID), Aspen, Mt Blackburn (one of my favorites in Alaska), and "Gros Ventre International" near Jackson, Wyoming. These pictures show the extremes, including extremely high altitudes, gravel, crooked strips, runways with varying slope, and very short fields.
You'll come away with new information each time you read the book.

Mountain Flying and Great Aviation Info !

Being a relatively new pilot ( 200 hours) I purchased this book to gain some insight into flying from my home base in coastal NC to the mountains of NC. I was greatly surprised that the text not only covered that subject in a very through manner but covered general aviation information just as well. I am preparing for my Instrument Rating and questions left un-answered by several Instrument Rating study guides were answered in a clear and concise manner, an unanticipated bonus.
For the new pilot,as well as those seeking information on mountain flying, this is a must read!

There is good content in this book

There is good content in this book, but it's so poorly edited it's hard to read. There are grammatical and various other mistakes all over the place. Further, things are repeated in a very annoying way. I often found myself asking myself if I'd accidentally misplaced my location in the book and was reading the same thing over again. Perhaps he's trying to reinforce concepts, but it feels like several attempts at writing about the same thing were just appended to one another.

Jan Ozer's new book, Video Encoding by the Numbers, is a wonderful resource for anyone doing video compression, from beginner to advanced.

The book packages up Ozer's deep knowledge and experience into a comprehensive review, with special emphasis on the latest technologies, including H.264, HEVC / H.265, and adaptive bitrate streaming.

That in itself would make this book tremendously valuable, but Ozer has augmented the text in two important ways -- by providing extensive examples of using FFmpeg to batch process videos, and by demonstrating the application of objective quality metrics to analyze the video and report its visual quality.

For too long, video compression has seemed to be a form of alchemy, with extensive folklore of mystic incantations required to produce video gold. Even if you could successfully penetrate the basic secrets (including formats and codecs and rates, CBR vs VBR, kbps vs bpp), you would only discover even more obscure deeper levels of parameters (including GOP structure, I-B-P, IDR, and adaptive streaming).

And even if you get the formula correct, how can you then package it up for use, and verify that it's working properly? Video Encoding by the Numbers attacks all these issues.

First, Ozer covers the basics of video compression and associated tools. He does not just provide advice, he backs it up by discussing the results of his extensive testing of compassion tools and options with real-world videos. This work is based on his background in video shooting and production, in reviewing and testing video tools, in consulting to build real-world solutions for compression pipelines, and then sharing his discoveries -- in articles, talks, on his Streaming Learning Center website, and in his books.

Then, to package up the compression process, Ozer demonstrates how to use the free cross-platform FFmpeg tool to perform batch compression, providing example scripts with each technical chapter, again tempered with discussions of his experience in experimenting with the various options.

And most importantly, Ozer grounds the compression process in science by applying objective quality metrics that analyze the video and report its visual quality. This is a huge advance driven by new metrics and tools, moving from simple PSNR to newer metrics including VQM and SSIM. Now you no longer need to sit and watch each compressed video you produce in order to check them (which obviously becomes impossible with multiple output formats and resolutions). Instead, Ozer shows how to use these tools to look for anomalies, and then focus in on the trouble spots.

As a further example of the exhaustive coverage in this book, the final section covers scaling up to streaming delivery, exploring adaptive bitrate approaches, discussing setting up your "encoding ladder" for streaming formats and resolutions, and then concluding by discussing the importance of per-title encoding, using these tools and metrics to find the best solution for each individual video.

It's hard to overstate the usefulness of this book, as a reference for understanding compression technology and trade-offs, as a checklist for best practices, as a guide to more effect batch compression, and as a path forward to a more scientific and objective approach to video compression.

In my case, Jan kindly provided an electronic copy of the book for review (available in PDF format), and I quickly purchased two more paper copies, one to keep and one to share. I was looking forward to this book, unfortunately this turned out to be disappointing. Anyone with a couple of semester from IAnimate or animation mentor under their belt will benefit little. This is a very superficial overview of a complex subject. The interviews added between the chapters are a nice filler. Keith Osborn described his workflow from step to spline, but too little for the non initiated and not enough for the somewhat experience animator. Of note the link to the companion files of the kindle edition is non functional. Furthermore, this text is 10$ cheaper if you order it directly from the publisher in a epub format. Oh well, there is no substitute for practice...

Great book that picks one subject and thoroughly explores it.

I really enjoyed this book. I've been animating for several years and have completed the feature course at iAnimate just last year so I guess I'm not a beginner or an expert, somewhere in between.

Regarding the content here's my take on it :
Since I've been studying animation intensively for a few years there's not a lot in the book I haven't already heard of (I've read ASK, Illusion of Life, Timing for Animation and lots of others), so parts like the discussion of the basic principles is stuff I'm already very familiar with. At the same time though - I really don't believe the basics can ever be repeated too often as this stuff is crucial to think about as much as possible! So I find having it repeated in different contexts by different books is a good thing.

The other side of it is that in most animation courses/books they talk about animation as a whole, and they don't dig deep into one style so much as cover many styles. But this book deals very specifically with very pushed cartoony animation in particular and for me that's very interesting and there's some great information in there that you can only learn with a lot of trial and error in many cases

It also covers a lot of stuff that's anecdotal, like the interviews, which I found was generally illuminating. I'm a freelancer and I work remotely so I'm always aware that one thing I miss by not being part of a studio is the chance to look over someone's shoulder while they work and to ask them questions about their thought process, workflow etc. I got some of that at iAnimate but I'm always hungry for more as every animator has their own tips and tricks to offer. So for me the interviews are definitely useful and had some great tips and insights.

Exceptional Transmedia Book on Applying 2D Animation Techniques in Maya

There are many books on animation available, some exceptional and some bin-worthy. What sets Cartoon Character Animation with Maya apart is that it discusses "from the trenches" theory while providing detailed tutorials and valuable resources. Osborn is able to get to the heart of how to transfer 2D character animation experience into 3D animation unlike any other book I've read or tutorial I've watched (and trust me, that is quite a few!). I'm a 3D animator with 14 years' experience and even I pulled out a few new nuggets of wisdom from this book to apply to my workflow. I also teach animation at the university level and this book will become required reading for my students. This is truly a transmedia project with great additional resources on the publisher's site.

If you want to learn how to animate in 3D with the feeling of Chuck Jones or Tex Avery, this is the book for you.

Brilliant, objective, thorough survey

This humble professor has given us a clear vision of what the majority of the first century Christians grew out of: their Hebrew, Jewish roots. this book brings Paul's analogy of the olive tree in Romans 11 alive. It is a wonderful reminder that the large majority of the early first century church were Jews who accepted and followed Jesus of Nazareth as their Messiah.

The book was a good summary of information

The book was a good summary of information. I bought it because it was "strongly recommended" for use by the professor. I passed the paper so that's a plus. The comments from the professor make me think the book may not be as "scholarly" as most students need.

Intertestamental Judaism & History.

This is an excellent book on the subject of judaism in the period between the OT and the NT.
Dr. Julius Scott covers a lot of ground regarding religious beliefs and how they changed over time.
There were different branches of judaism with similarities as well as differences.The author also details some contrasts between Samaritans,Pharisees,and Sadducees.

There is some helpful information on the Septuagint,it's source,and difference of translation between the hebrew OT and the greek OT.

Dr.Scott looks at Josephus and Philo and the value of their writings in the study of intertestamental judaism,with some understandable scepticism of Josephus.

He also details the priesthood and rivalry between families-Zadokites and Tobiads.The pollution of the priesthood is also discussed.

He covers the start of rabbinical judaism and the circumstances that led to the percieved need for oral law/tradition as a hedge around Torah.
There was some interesting information about Simon bar Kosiba(Kochba).

There is an "Intertestamental Calendar and Festivals Table" that is an excellent resource about the Biblical feasts.This period also saw the addition and alteration of some OT feasts.

The use of the sacred name is discussed.
"The Talmud and other rabbinical sources indicate that by the time of Simon the Just(c.200BC)the divine name was no longer pronounced,except by the high priest on Yom Kippur".
He also had an interesting perspective on the sabbatical and Jubilee years.
"The sabbatical year,occuring every seventh year and the Jubilee,every fiftieth year,prevented the accumulation of too much wealth and oppression of the poor".

There is a very good list of general sources,frequent footnotes and quotes.
I found a few minor points that I think are debatable in the book.That doesn't lessen the value of the author's work.
While not as comprehensive as Edersheim's "The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah", this book is a good choice for anyone interested in the diverse beliefs and Messianic expectations of the period.
