The book is a fascinating intermingling of different narratives (artistic, intellectual, autobiographical) and discourses (scholarly, polemical, visionary), and it begins at the end, which is of course a new beginning, with the outline of the academic programs that have emerged from their interdisciplinary collaboration.

About the Author
Mike Pearson is Professor of Performance Studies in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. From 1981-1997 he was Artistic Director of the Welsh theatre company Brith Gof (whose work was featured in Site-Specific Art, (2000)). Michael Shanks is Professor of Classics and Cultural Anthropology at Stanford University. He is one of the world's foremost archaeological thinkers, and author of many works including Experiencing the Past, Classical Archaeology of Greece (1996), and Art and the Greek City State (1999).

An intriguing contemporary account of landscape narratives and performance and an interesting look at how Deep Maps can provide a framework for narratives and performance. It will inspire readers to get out their walking shoes and discover the palimpsests of their own neighborhoods and favorite places. For anyone looking for interesting ideas for a theatre or conceptual arts project, this will be a stimulating read
