Bright funny and wildly romantic

I loved this book, it is one of the funniest and most wildly romantic of Hart's marriage of convenience-style romances. This is about Deborah who is travelling in Indonesia when her belongings are all stolen. She is in a bit of bind already but now is even more so! Luckily - or unluckily Gil, an engineer who is living and working there is passing at the time and reluctantly helps her out.

To cut a long story short his fiance Debi has refused to come out to stay with him and he needs someone to help him with the work, and due to circumstances she needs to be married to him, in short, he needs a wife - a sensible wife.

Deborah really is not a sensible wife at all but she is prepared to try, only trouble is she doesn't really do what she is supposed to, she is hopeless at office work and typing and filing and all Gil seems to dois look at her in a disapproving fashion.

However Deborah is an enormously agreeable character and very easy to like and enjoy. You can see how the love grows between them. This very much reminds me of a Georgette Heyer romance. It has bright sparkling dialogue and good fun characters.

This book was an enjoyable read. I liked that the relationship development between the main characters. It was not an intense attraction at first sight but it grew overtime. Particularly refreshing was that it took a while before the relationship became sexual although there were mild intimate moments leading up to the sex. The pacing of the story was good and the minor characters complimented the main characters in a balanced way. I would recommend this book.

This is a thoughtful, insightful book on China's energy security. In 248 pages, the authors succinctly describe China's energy dilemma and the public policies it enacted to mitigate the risks associated with importing crude oil from various regions around the world that are fraught with terrorism and political instability. One prominent feature of the book includes a detailed description of the corporate tactics China (NOCs, Government, Banks) employs to secure overseas O&G assets. IMHO, it is one of the best books available on China's O&G problems.

One of the Best Books I've Ever Read - Definitely a New Favorite!!

'While Beauty Slept' is the beautiful and tragic fairy tale reimagining of Sleeping Beauty. The novel follows main character Elise - now an old woman - as she tells her great-granddaughter what really happened behind the story of Sleeping Beauty. Elise should know it well - she was the princess' companion when everything happened. The novel is Elise's story - of her life before and while at court, the lives of several powerful women, and the secrets of the princess herself - and what really happened during that fateful time.

I'm rarely at a loss for words while writing a review, but this book has left me completely speechless. Nothing I write will do this novel the justice it deserves, but I'll do my best to share my thoughts and opinions. Where to start? The entire book is magical. I was hooked from the very first line and I didn't quit reading until I had literally read the entire thing - which happened to be all at one time. The cast of characters that we meet in the story is unusual - a haphazard mix of the poor and the incredibly wealthy, a blend of men and women who search for happiness but remain lost, while others find exactly what they were looking for - even if it means not having the life they thought they wanted. Each character in the story - mostly the secondary ones - have distinct personalities and quirks that make them unique. The author wrote about each one in such a personal way that I felt as if I saw them - knew them - even if it wasn't more than an acquaintance. I don't even know how to describe Elise along with the other major characters in the book. Elise is determined to make something out of her life by working as a servant in the castle. She makes her way there and eventually starts moving up the hierarchy. She's humble, smart, and devoted - to her mother and later to the princess and the other women at court she becomes a confident to. Elise matures completely throughout the span of the story - in the beginning of her tale, she is a mere girl, but by the end she is an old woman telling her story to her great-granddaughter. Elise grows and matures in all ways - emotionally, physically, mentally, and any other way possible. I loved watching her character grow and expand throughout the story.

The plot of the novel is phenomenal. It's said to be a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale, but it's so much more than that. It's a story of love, loss, grief, hope, dark secrets, fate, and friendship - just to name some of the themes that run throughout it's pages. Almost all readers know at least the basics of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale, so parts of novel do match up with the story we've known for so long. I liked it when the two synched up because it made me remember the old adage that says in every lie (or legend) is a nugget of truth. Those words are more than appropriate for the story and I think it made the book just a bit easier to believe - that what happened in the story may have really happened. The writing was phenomenal. The author used just enough detail and imagery to make me jump inside her world, but she didn't overdo it. There weren't overdone descriptions or flashy imagery that could mess up a story and the reader's experience. It was written with a simple beauty and a natural flow that carries the reader away on the journey with Elise without even realizing that it happened. The simplicity of the imagery and details only enhanced my reading of the book. It had a perfect balance of the two that kept the readers fully engrossed in the story without overstimulating their senses. As I mentioned above, I absolutely loved every aspect of this book. Every. Single. One. I can't find a bad thing to say about it at all. I got so caught up in the story and was so far into the world the author created, that I had major visceral reactions to situations that happen. I don't normally react so strongly to a book - very rarely do I actually cry or get so mad that I don't want to read anymore. When I come across a novel that can get that kind of gut reaction out of me - I know that it's something amazing. And this one had me on an emotional roller coaster of feelings - I was laughing at times, sobbing during others, and so mad that I almost flung the book across the room and started ranting at the characters. Even after finishing the book, I couldn't get it out of my head. The characters, the story, the world that they lived in - I couldn't stop thinking about them or certain parts of the story line itself. This is one book I know for sure I will be re-reading time and again because of it's magnificent writing style and enchanting story. I can't recommend this book highly enough! Every reader should give it a shot - even if you're not a fairy tale type reader - because the quality of the writing and the story itself will sweep you off your feet. Fans of fantasy, fairy tales, retellings, and historical fiction need to read this book NOW. I swear you won't be disappointed.

My review: I was so excited to read this book. Bracing for the second snowstorm in two weeks, I stocked up on supplies and we all planned on just hunkering down at home. I snuggled up and read the best retelling of Sleeping Beauty I could ever imagine. I'm not a fan of sweeping, sighing romances and too often fairy tale retellings are too sappy for me. The main character of While Beauty Slept is not the princess but instead a village girl who leaves her childhood farm to work in the castle. Beginning as a chambermaid and rising through the castle caste system to become the closest person to the royal family, Elise Dalriss is constantly questioning everyone's motives. This story has everything a great fairy tale should have: a castle, doting townspeople, and a loving king and queen, but also: twin sisters practicing herbal medicine and dark arts, womanizing knights, and betrayals. I compare this book to Mists of Avalon with an upstairs/downstairs theme because Elise is a servant but in direct contact with the royal family. 55 years ago, Disney adapted Grimm's Sleeping Beauty for the big screen and this year Maleficent releases in May. Blackwell's timing for this release is perfect. I read this book in paperback version and I suggest reading it in the same format if possible because this book begs you to cuddle up with it at night for a grown up bedtime story.

This is the version of Sleeping Beauty I want my daughters to read!

Since entering adulthood, it has been my strong conviction that much of what ails American culture in particular but perhaps on a more global scale are Disney movies. The idea that good always conquers over evil, and that the princess always gets her handsome perfect prince in the end is ludicrous. But we grow up with those notions. Cautionary folk tales have been morphed into unrealistic brainwashing fairy tales.

Thank God for authors like Elizabeth Blackwell who have the good grace and wonderful creative ability to weave a more complex tale more reflective of real life.

Now that is not to say that I don’t enjoy some escapist reading on occasion—I do. But Blackwell’s revisioning of this classic fairy tale story is refreshing and refreshingly honest. From page one through to the very last page, Blackwell kept me eager to read the next line. Most apparently Blackwell borrows from Sleeping Beauty but there are also elements of Cinderella. Blackwell skillfully tells her story through the eyes of Elise a servant of the royal household, instead of through the princess. This device allows Blackwell to add dimension and depth to the story, allowing the reader to see the royals as people instead of heroes or idols and allows regular people to have heroic moments.

There is pain and suffering in this tale—Blackwell sugarcoats nothing. But there is also a tremendous amount of hope and redemption here that reflects a life worth living even without the guarantee of a happy ending.

While Beauty Slept is a superb modern interpretations of the classics and a welcome addition to my library. For the Once Upon a Time and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland lovers, this should be an absolute hit. And if you love Gregory McGuire’s Wicked or Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister or the original Grimm’s fairy tales, this is a must read.

We're ALL on life's journey...

Life itself is a wonderful UNKNOWN to all human beings - and that's what makes it so wonderful.

No one has it "figured out"...and no one lives the life of another.

Our life experiences are our own, and no one can change or alter that. And...this makes life wonderful as well.

I grew up in a household with a loving Mother and Father and an older Brother. We all shared the same experiences as a family, and my Brother and I shared the same experiences as siblings.

However, how we INTERPRETED those life experiences is where our unique individuality comes into place. You see, although we share experiences...we interpreted experiences differently. And this, I believe, it what shapes us into who we are.

Let's face it. Life has it's "Ups & Downs". And, every once and while people need inspiration. When people need inspiration, they seek out others who they believe they can ASSOCIATE with...someone who they believe is SIMILAR to themselves.

I have no doubt in my mind that many people out there will be able to associate with Heidi herself and will be able to find this book as the inspiration they need to know that others out there have or are experiencing similar challenges...and have the perseverance to get through them.

I applaud Heidi for sharing her personal experiences so that others may benefit.

Read it at least once! Maybe twice?

This book is really hard to describe (especially without giving any spoilers...but I'll try my best). I thought it would be scarier than it was. The "Backward" at the beginning was a little spooky. But it was not really a suspense, horror, romance or thriller. At best I'd place it in the historical fiction category with time traveling. You need to pay attention while reading as it jumps around a bit, and time passes quickly in some sections. The story is split into three parts and I believe I liked the middle the least as I didn't like Rachel's character much. As a fact I didn't particularly like Shay or Brandy much either. I did like the secondary characters a lot though, especially Thora K. I would have loved it if Millhiser had gone more into the backstory of the mirror, more than what was described in the "backward." And why does it kill some people but not others?

This novel would be great for a book club. It's definitely discussion worthy. I might read it again in a few months to a year as I'll pick up on things that I may not have read the first time around.

The Mirror, what it takes it rarely give back.

I read this book years ago, and when I saw the title again, I remembered how good it was. So I purchased it on my kindle.
It is about a mirror, very old and very spooky, that has done damage to people for years. Various owners covered it up and hid it away over the years, but always when it was uncovered by some innocent person unaware of it's dangerous abilities, something awful happened.
In the case of Shay Garrett, she was completely unaware, and on the night before her wedding, she found herself, in front of the mirror. It warmed to the touch and a lightening storm outside cracked, Shay felt her world turn upside down and woke to find herself in the same house, but in the body of her own grandmother Brandy. From a fast car to a slow wagon, from one wedding to another, this time to a complete stranger, she had to learn how to survive in this different time period.
Marlys Millhiser wrote many good books. The Mirror is one of them.

If you like time travel you should like this book. It's not too involved and goes very fast. I read it over 30 years ago when I was much younger but I've read it since and still enjoyed it.

Quick Read, packed with useful ideas

This book was required reading. It was organized, thought provoking and contained many good ideas for the classroom. Suggested learning activities apply mainly to elementary age, but can be idea resources to apply to older students. Appropriate challenge Scripturally to consider and support the needs of all students facing learning difficulties.

Dr. Ackerman did a wonderful job of providing easy-to-read Bible-based information on reaching struggling learners. My favorite part was the multiple examples of differentiation she included, along with explanations on how to incorporate them and diagrams to illustrate them.

Simple read

Story-line: Interesting and different from the usual books belonging to the romance genre/ books on societal realties, ‘The Other End of the Corridor’ is not all about chasing one’s dreams. It is also not all about lies and deceit. Instead the author has cleverly woven the life of the hapless girl child forced into marriage at a young age, the crushing of her dreams and the apathy towards her state both at home and outside. There is all that’s anti-girl, anti- woman portrayed here like gender bias, domestic violence and the blame- game inflicted by society on the victim of rape and molestation.

The protagonist, a simple and dreamy girl wishes to soar high and make a career, a life of her own but that’s not to be. Her wings are clipped even before she can prepare to take-off. She finds herself tied down by a loveless marriage that offers her nothing but pain. But even in the face of adversity her eyes search for a glimmer of hope at the end of the dark tunnel only to be disappointed. She lives each day believing that tomorrow will spell a change only to be disappointed.

Her patience tested to breaking point, she finally decides to walk to the other end of the corridor though it’s fraught with obstacles. Does she make it or does she stumble and fall down? To know that one must read the book.

The story has its fair measure of twists and turns but there are also several such instances that one can foresee much before they unfold.

All-in-all, there was times I felt let down, especially when the protagonist kept on pinning for the man of her dreams not only to be let down once but again and again. It felt demeaning and I couldn’t help feel angry with her. I wished she knew how to keep her spine erect. In fact that’s where the author wins. She is able to involve the reader totally.

A story that touches upon a sensitive subject in a sensible direction

A story set against the backdrop of a typical Indian household where the woman is expected to “obey” the man of the house – should make an interesting reading. This story was of course interesting enough albeit minor clinches which sort of reduced the levels of enthusiasm that I would normally have while reading such a book.

The protagonist, Leela, a dark skinned average girl is labeled unlucky thanks to “manglik” planetary alignment in her horoscope. Her parents favor her brother over and she fights for the recognition that she deserves. She dreams of being an RJ but parents force her to get married. When a handsome boy from a wealthy family comes knocking in the form of a proposal, Leela envisages her dreams taking flight. Sadly life has other plans for her, her dreams are shattered even before they actually take flight. Delving into previously traversed path, Leela embarks on a journey to discover herself, this journey is all what the story is about.

I bet that for any seasoned Indian reader, the above paragraph would have probably contained about a handful of clich�s and stereotypes. Yes, this story had a lot of that – dark skinned and meek girl, abusive relationships, parents who believe the husband is the god. These very stereotypes are what made this book fast paced and kept me hooked. I was waiting for a point where all that changed and that didn’t exactly happen the way I expected, so score one for the writer for putting a good twist! The characterization was pretty much above level for what is expected from a rookie writer. Nevertheless, I felt there was an overdose of the protagonist. With a bit of fleshing for other characters, like her parents or her maid who was also played a vital part in the story could have certainly helped. I also felt the writer ended up modifying the core traits of a couple of characters to suit the ending that she wrote. May be she intended for those characters to actually repent for their acts, but it wasn’t really convincing.

The writer, however, must be lauded for taking on the serious issue of domestic violence and tackling it in an almost appealing manner. Not every new writer takes on such a complicated subject!

MY SAY: A story that touches upon a sensitive subject in a sensible direction.

This one is a must read for all those who believe in women empowerment

I wanted to read this book from the moment my eyes fell on the cover. It’s simply gorgeous. Yeah, I am like that. I so fall for an eye-catching cover. I filled the form with alacrity when the book came up for blog tour via The Book Club, without even checking out the blurb or genre.

When I started reading the book, I couldn’t understand the first page at all. After finishing the book, I feel it’s been placed wrongly, not giving the right impression of the book. It’s important that the book begins in an interesting way.

The moment I started reading the second page I was hooked. But...

Spoilers galore from here on... STOP READING if you haven’t read the book yet

I could so relate to the beginning, the people from the guy’s side coming to view the girl, she being a manglik, the astrologer insisting on being a know-all, the parents desperate to get rid of the girl, a duty to be performed for the sake of society and more.

As I read more and more, I started feeling depressed actually. Wasn’t there an end to Leela’s woes? What’s a story that can’t make her a heroine? were the questions that came to my mind. I trudged on and am I glad I did!

The language is flawless and the proofing perfect. This is a major plus for me when I read a book. So a special kudos to the author and publishing house on this!

Here is this girl – yeah, Leela is a girl who’s not even out of her teens when she gets married to Vishal – struggling to lead a life, smothering all her dreams. She treated so badly by her husband and also by her highly educated, educationist mother-in-law. Vishal is a spoilt brat who doesn’t have a job to go to. He’s a chain smoker and a wife-beater. Leela is shocked with the turn her life has taken and doesn’t know how to get out of it. Her parents wouldn’t hear of her woes. They are not interested. Her elder brother is too selfish and doesn’t want to listen to his sister’s problems.

Vishal getting a job based in Bangalore appears to be a relief. But away from Delhi and her mother-in-law, it’s not funny for this housewife of barely twenty to manage the household, especially on such a tight budget that her husband gives her.

Leela happens to meet two other women who used to live in Patiala during her school days. Priya is an airline pilot who’s confident and doesn’t need men in her life. She’s got a career and has adopted a girl-child, bringing her up all by herself.

Harleen is married to a super-rich guy and has a posh life. She and her friends are ready to befriend the middle-class Leela.

It brought tears to my eyes as I watched Leela finding some fun in life when she gets to have a makeover at Harleen’s home; gets to wear some of her classy clothes. This is a kid who doesn’t have a life. Why wasn’t I surprised when she tries her hand at smoking and drinking and a bit of flirting? Facebook comes to her rescue at one point. I couldn’t blame her for creating a fake account. Come on, who doesn’t want appreciation? She has no life with her son-on-a-bitch husband.

Even as I felt depressed reading the book, I couldn’t help being fascinated reading the way Leela’s life unfolded in front of my eyes; how she bounces back again and yet again, never giving up on her life. She scored a major point in my eyes as not once did she think of committing suicide.

I waited and waited for someone to rescue her. Nobody did. For a few pages, I thought it was Jai who’s going to be her knight in shining armour. But no!

In the end (okay, I won’t go into the details; please read the book to find out what happens), it’s Leela for herself. Okay, she has her girlfriends who help her out.

What for me was a moment of triumph as a woman was when Leela comes up aces, landing on her feet after all the abuse she undergoes.

My hats off to the author for penning such a touching book! Yeah, I shed a lot of tears on this one.

Congratulations Sujata Rajpal! This one is a must read for all those who believe in women empowerment.

Ross Bentley is the author of the popular Motorbooks Speed Secrets series. He is a racing coach, race car driver, author, and speaker. Bentley grew up in a racing family in Vancouver, British Columbia. He raced in the CART Indy Car series in the 1990s before moving on to endurance racing, where he won the 1998 GT3 United States Road Racing Championship and the 2003 SRPII Class Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Amazing book on high speed driving and racing. Love it.

This is a great book on high performance and race driving. I've participated in about a dozen HPDE's (High Performance Driving Event) with amazing and knowledgeable instructors. I learned a ton at all of the HPDE's and got to practice some of what is discussed in this book. However, I learned more about the physics, techniques, explanations and secrets to driving fast within the first 150 or so pages of this book than I did at all those events combined. That statement isn't to diminish how much I learned either from my drivers at these HPDE's.

There is very little substitute for getting behind the wheel and feeling and practicing all this book discusses but it gives you all the knowledge you need in order to KNOW how to be a faster and safer driver. I think the instructors in the one or two-day events I go to can only cover so much and can only get so deep into the specifics of what this book discusses. Digging deeper into all the physics of driving on the edge and how that applies to your available inputs (steering, braking, accelerating) is extremely helpful.

I look forward to reading the remainder of the book but if I only had the first 150 pages I feel like I already got more than my money's worth from this book hence the early review.
