Very poor translation

This is a translation of the dhammapada from 1921, and not a very good one. It's very clear that the author had difficulty trying to find equivalent words for Pali terms. In addition it seems like the translator added their own interpretation to the text, completely obscuring the meaning. For free it's not bad, and if someone has a different copy of the dhammapada it might be an interesting addition to their collection. However for someone who doesn't know much about Buddhism or the tripitaka I would definitely avoid this version. There are much better translations that you can get for the Kindle. I highly recommend The Dhammapada by Ananda Maitreya and Thich Nhat Hanh.

This is by far the worst translation of a very poetic Pali script

This is by far the worst translation of a very poetic Pali script. It turns poetry into a ham-handed, clumsy, mess. Not only is the poetry gone-the meanings (according to other translations I have seen) are totally changed. This should be removed from the market.

But sometimes the past casts long shadows, and Fronto is about to come face to face with enemies old and new; enemies who will bring him to the brink of destruction and force him to confront personal demons long buried.

Straight and True As A Spear

Fronto is indeed back, and as with all Turney's Marius' Mules novels, Fronto is the focus of a larger, fascinating world that rests lightly but firmly on history. This book has two main features that compliment each other to devastating effect: a spare and intense story of the simplest kind, the unrelenting pursuit of one man by another, and the larger story of these men's past.

Turney weaves his characters into history so well that it seems that he has invented the whole of the ancient world just to support and surround them. It's always a surprise to me that something that seems so inevitable in the story's circumstances is actually true. The chase that Fronto is trapped in is so fierce and horrifying that it contrasts completely with the wide surrounding world that is this series' specialty.

It's one of the most fast-moving and suspenseful novels in the series, and the most deeply personal and heartbreaking. Oddly, the very fact that this novel in the series holds much of Fronto's early history seems to make it a natural stand-alone novel, and a good entry point for a reader new to these wonderful books.

Fronto's Past Catches Up Yet Again.

Yet another adventure for Marcus Falerius Fronto and his Remi friend, Galronius. This novel leads Fronto and his Legion of veterans into the territory of the Aquitanii, where they meet with many rather gruesome scenes, as they try to settle the veterans in these lands. Since the history of Caesar's visit to Aquitania is not well recorded, the novel is a fiction based on the premise of an Aquitanii revolt. The author readily acknowledges this, however has still written a suspenseful novel that keeps the reader guessing. I even went back to earlier books to see if I could find out the identity of the Smiling King. I couldn't. The plot unfolds in such a way that the reader has difficulty in putting down the book. The Smiling King's survival is not realistic, but by glossing over that and going with the plot, the reader is kept on tender hooks. Thus a novel with Fronto and Galronius overcoming many rather difficult challenges, fills a period in Roman history when nothing much happens. Only a few typos, which causes you to reread the sentence. A well written and thoroughly enjoyable novel.

A great addition to "Marius' Mules"

Pax Gallica is easily one of Simon Turney’s best books. It is relentlessly paced, the characters are well developed and the plot is thoroughly engaging, therefore all of this is likely to raise the price of his books, something that I am willing to live with. As Turney states, there is quite a bit of artistic license in this novel, but it is not gratuitous as it indeed “plugs the gaps” and we are left with a better understanding of Marcus Falerius Fronto, the primary protagonist in the “Marius’ Mules” series, as this book really delves into the events that served to shape Fronto. While I still feel that Turney’s characters drink far too much to come through as truly Roman, it is a flaw that I can live with. I will also add, with hope that my history professors don’t hold this against me, that the “Marius’ Mules” series is much more fun to read than Caesar’s “De Bello Gallico.” I happily recommend this book to any fan of historical novels.
