What a great book. I will admit he has a way of making me feel like my progress in yoga is not progress at all...but that is the point. One must be ready to read this book, and be ready for the feelings that will come up. It is well written and pretty easy to understand but don't expect it to be a cake walk. Some of the chapters are very short but are filled with such information you need to read more than once. I can honestly say that I have grown tremendously from reading this book and my asana practice has also grown. There a If you're ready to grow your yoga practice then GET THIS BOOK.

Beautiful meditations on practicing and teaching yoga
By Craig Shoemake
While I find I enjoy and benefit from anything Iyengar writes, I was actually more impressed by this book than I had expected to be. I did not go into it with any particular expectations--perhaps that helped--except the very positive reviews on Amazon. It is not an asana book, and Iyengar not being a scholar (he does not even have a high school degree he says on page 28, and was a "dumb student"), it is not a "learned" tome of any sort. This book is, rather, a subtle, gentle, at times revealing, and quite elegantly written series of reflections on the practice and teaching of yoga. Mr. Iyengar may not have been much of a student (what does this say about schools, I wonder?), but this book is clearly the product of an intelligent, discerning, and dedicated life.

It is divided into five parts: (1) "Yoga and Life," with essays describing generally the traditional Hindu view of the life process and how yoga fits in with that; (2) "The Tree and Its Parts," where the eight limbs defined in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are described; (3) "Yoga and Health," which is pretty self-explanatory; (4) "The Self and Its Journey," examining the higher practices of pranayama and meditation leading to samadhi; and (5) "Yoga In the World," which has only two essays, the first about yoga as an art form, the second about the requirements and responsibilities of yoga teachers.

Although Iyengar does quote a bit of Sanskrit here and there, I would not say any of the essays are particularly "technical," though this is certainly not to say they are at all superficial. Quite the opposite--this book could not have been written by someone who was anything less than a master of his field, with long years of experience and reflection. Which leads me to say that although anyone can read this book--beginner or advanced, the merely curious to the hardcore--what you get out of it will definitely be determined by the depth of your own practice. Many rereadings, particularly when one is at different stages of development, or when one has perhaps crossed the line from student to teacher, will no doubt yield new insights and understandings.

I'd like to share a few points of what, for me, were highlights. Mr. Iyengar has a way with analogies, and a brilliant one is found on page 17, where the four original castes (peasant, merchant, warrior, priest) are compared to attitudes or states of mind. His essay entitled "Childhood" (20) was simply beautiful, and I found the description of some of his life contained in "Family Life" (27) very inspiring. The second part of the book is an excellent overview of yoga practice as a way of meditation and illumination; I thought in particular the notion of the Eight Limbs (ashtanga) of Patanjali as a hologram (see "The Roots," page 50) to be nothing if not brilliant. There are, in fact, many very insightful and illuminating passages in this section, things I never thought about in quite that way. His discussion of yoga as a healing art (especially from p. 93ff) was very interesting--I wish he would write a whole book devoted to his experiences in this regard. I could go on, as there are many excellent passages, but lastly I will cite p. 117ff as a brilliant evocation of why the Buddhist practice of mindfulness is so easily in accordance with the practice of asanas. Iyengar writes:

"Conciousness is always present in our finger, but most of the time we are not aware of it, so the consciousness of the finger is dormant. You should know the difference between consciousness and awareness. Consciousness exists everywhere in the body. When you are walking, if a thorn touches your foot, what happens? It pricks, and you immediately feel the pain, so you cannot say that consciousness was not there. But until he thorn pricked you, you were not aware of your foot. The consciousness in your foot was dormant, but the moment the foot was pricked, it was brought to the surface. To awaken that dormant consciousness is awareness. Your consciousness is six feet long, or five and a half feet long in your body--it is as long as your body is tall. But awareness is small. Awareness may extend two feet, one foot, one inch or half an inch. The yogi says that by practising asanas, you can bring awareness to an extension equal to that of consciousness. This is total awareness. This is meditation."

Mr. Iyengar is of course a hatha yogin, and while practicing asanas may take you a long ways, I do not feel it is a substitute for a hard-core sitting practice. This may be the area where he comes up short, and indeed, the only passage of the book that I thoroughly disagreed with revealed this. On p. 139 he writes:

"If you work diligently on asana, pranayama and pratyahara, you will receive your reward of dharana, dhyana and samadhi, which are the effects of that practice. They CANNOT BE PRACTISED DIRECTY [emphasis added]. If we say that we are practising them, this means that we do not know the earlier aspects of yoga. It is only by practising the earlier aspects that we can hope to arrive at their effects."

I don't agree with this at all. In fact, as a statement of the reality of meditation practice (especially in the Buddhist tradition, pick your yana), it is patently false. All over the Buddhist world (not to mention the Christian, Muslim, Jain, Hindu, etc), people come to meditation without ever having practiced asanas or pranayama, and many of them do just fine. Might they benefit from asanas? Of course! But, as Iyengar showed quite eloquently, the Path can be approached and the Goal attained through any of the limbs of yoga (though some are more direct and less time-consuming). While I do not wish to make overmuch of this one little misstep in an otherwise superb book, I do think it points out a shortcoming in Iyengar's approach, which appears marked by an imbalance favoring asanas over direct meditation practice.

This aside--which is just my nitpicking--I cannot recommend this book enthusiastically enough to anyone exploring the world of yoga. Read it, practice, reflect, and reread it. Do not read it for information, rather for grounding, seasoning, maturation. If yoga is a tree (and since Mr. Iyengar says it is, who are we to argue?) then read it and learn to think like a tree--to make my own unworthy stab at a different sort of analogy!

Wonderful reference book that explains the philosophy of yoga in simple terms. It helped me to understand why the symbol of the tree is so helpful to my practice and gives me something to aspire as I continue learning.

Lullabies for Little Criminals, by Heather O'Neill

[Read by Miriam McDonald]

A new deluxe edition of the international bestseller by Heather O'Neill, the Giller-shortlisted author of Daydreams of Angels and The Girl Who Was Saturday Night, featuring an original foreword from the author, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the coming-of-age story that People describes as ''a vivid portrait of life on skid row.''

Baby, all of thirteen years old, is lost in the gangly, coltish moment between childhood and the strange pulls and temptations of the adult world. Her mother is dead; her father, Jules, is scarcely more than a child himself and is always on the lookout for his next score. Baby knows that ''chocolate milk'' is Jules' slang for heroin and sees a lot more of that in her house than the real article. But she takes vivid delight in the scrappy bits of happiness and beauty that find their way to her and moves through the threat of the streets as if she's been choreographed in a dance.

Soon, though, a hazard emerges that is bigger than even her hard-won survival skills can handle. Alphonse, the local pimp, has his eye on her for his new girl; he wants her body and soul -- and what the johns don't take he covets for himself. At the same time, a tender and naively passionate friendship unfolds with a boy from her class at school, who has no notion of the dark claims on her -- which even her father, lost on the nod, cannot totally ignore. Jules consigns her to a stint in juvie hall, and for the moment this perceived betrayal preserves Baby from terrible harm -- but after that, her salvation has to be her own invention.

Channeling the artlessly affecting voice of her thirteen-year-old heroine with extraordinary accuracy and power, Heather O'Neill's heartbreaking and wholly original debut novel blew readers away when it was first published ten years ago. Now in a new deluxe package it is sure to capture its next decade of readers as Baby picks her pathway along the edge of the abyss to arrive at a place of redemption -- and of love.

Amazon.com Review
A down-and-dirty debut novel, a harrowing recital of a young life, a funny, innocent, streetwise telling of life on the street--all of the above describe Heather O'Neill's Lullabies for Little Criminals. In an autobiographical essay included in the book, O'Neill, whose own childhood parallels rather closely the life of Baby, her book's heroine, says, "In Lullabies, I wanted to capture what I remembered of the drunken babbling of unfortunate twelve-year-olds: their illusions; their ludicrously bad choices, their lack of morality and utter disbelief in cause and effect." She accomplishes all of the above and more.

Baby is born to two 15-year-olds, and her mother dies a year later. Her father, Jules, is not a bad man, but he is a perpetual kid, without money, education, purpose, moral compass, or any idea of what being a parent is about or how ordinary people live. When the novel begins, Baby is almost 12, and her 12th year turns out to be a very big one indeed. She smokes pot, shoots heroin, loses her virginity, and lives in foster homes, a state detention home, and one seedy, squalid apartment after another. She comes under the spell of Alphonse, a neighborhood pimp, and is so hungry for male affection that she mistakes what he offers for love and care.

Baby and her equally neglected and abused friends long for adulthood, whatever that means. They look up to sophisticated druggies and efficient thieves. Baby says, "I don't know why I was upset about not being an adult. It was right around the corner. Becoming a child again is what is impossible. That's what you have a legitimate reason to be upset over." Baby is matter-of-fact about her predicament. She knows that other kids have lives very different from hers but says, "It never occurs to you when you are very young to need something other than what your parents have to offer to you." This poignant story is beautifully written, sprinkled throughout with humor, pathos, unbelievable privation, and, in the end, the hope of redemption. At least we know that Heather O'Neill grew up to be a writer of no mean accomplishment. --Valerie Ryan

From Publishers Weekly
In her debut novel, This American Life contributor O'Neill offers a narrator, Baby, coming of age in Montreal just before her 12th birthday. Her mother is long dead. Her father, Jules, is a junkie who shuttles her from crumbling hotels to rotting apartments, his short-term work or moneymaking schemes always undermined by his rage and paranoia. Baby tries to screen out the bad parts by hanging out at the community center and in other kids' apartments, by focusing on school when she can and by taking mushrooms and the like. (She finds sex mostly painful.) Stints in foster care, family services and juvenile detention ("nostalgia could kill you there") usually end in Jules's return and his increasingly erratic behavior. Baby's intelligence and self-awareness can't protect her from parental and kid-on-kid violence, or from the seductive power of being desired by Alphonse, a charismatic predator, on the one hand, and by Xavier, an idealistic classmate, on the other. When her lives collide, Baby faces choices she is not equipped to make. O'Neill's vivid prose owes a debt to Donna Tartt's The Little Friend; the plot has a staccato feel that's appropriate but that doesn't coalesce. Baby's precocious introspection, however, feels pitch perfect, and the book's final pages are tear-jerkingly effective. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Baby's mother is dead; her hapless father is a heroin addict; home is a series of tiny, increasingly squalid apartments in Montreal's seedier precincts; her boyfriend is a pimp; and--about the time she turns 13--she becomes a prostitute. Not exactly the stuff of Sweet Valley High--more like the worst of the teen problem novels of the 1970s--on steroids! And, yet, first-time-author O'Neill somehow infuses her troubling story with a kind of heartbreaking innocence, thanks to her central conceit that Baby, her father (who was only 15 when she was born), and her friends are only pretending to be criminals to get by. The question of whether they will get by adds an element of suspense to this sad, almost wistful story, which occasionally strays dangerously close to sentimentality. O'Neill is a wonderful stylist, though, and the voice she has created for Baby is original and altogether captivating. Michael Cart

her boyfriend gives her presents like rocks and paperclips
By S.K.
I didn't get on with this book for a few reasons. One, Baby's characterization was unrealistic. I remember being twelve and thirteen, and did not recognize Baby or her friends: they were a false mixture of childish and adventurous, clearly exemplifying their lack of supervision and the line between innocence and experience, but it didn't ring true. Her boyfriend gives her presents like rocks and paperclips. She plays with dolls and sticks her tongue out at people.

Two, the book is full of beautifully poetic comparisons and turns of phrase, but it doesn't work when *everything* is described this way, and when all the characters sound the same. A pimp says a prostitute's sweater looks like 'watching TV with bad reception.' Jules' friend says he never drinks milk 'because cows don't exist.' Alphonse says his mother 'thinks he has turned into a cat.' Baby's school friend says she never writes in cursive because 'it looks like pubic hair.' On and on. These are sometimes intriguing and vivid ideas, but characters should be more than just vessels to fill with the author's voice.

Three (this is actually an extension of two), when everything is described fleetingly and with strange juxtapositions, the reader is blocked off from getting to know the character of Baby or the reality of her experiences. She says a friend gives her a tattoo of the moon on her knee, in a throwaway sentence, then never mentions it again. When she injects heroin she says 'A white pigeon sat next to me and began flawlessly conjugating French verbs.' It's not a realistic description of the drug's effects, even discounting the overused style of surreal metaphor.

Finally, the ending was very abrupt and didn't come to any kind of meaningful conclusion.

I came away from this book not knowing Baby, not feeling like she was a real character, and not feeling fully immersed in any of the scenes.

Sad, but worthwhile...
By Billie Zahurak
This was sad. A very, very sad read. Heartbreaking. I cannot believe this narrator was 11 and then 12 years old. Child prostitution is an ugly, ugly thing and our narrator, Baby, made it like a commonplace event she was participating in. I was so angry at her Dad for allowing everything in the story to happen to her. I was angry at her for not being stronger. I was angry at the author for making me look so deeply into this story.

With that said, it was a very worthwhile book. The writing style got a bit tedious at times - way too many similes and metaphors - there's no way that this 12-year-old girl could put into words the "pictures" she saw in everyday life.

Like many other reviewers, I question the cover. It does not fit the sadness of the story - or the characters.

I'm glad I read this book; it just had some issues.

Eye-opening
By RoyaN
it really opened my eyes to the imagination vs reality of a child expulsed prematurely into the vicious realm of the adult addict and life of poverty.
Not mention, it made me realise, looking back, that there had been a lot of troubled kids in my elementary school who i now see have all the signs that they were going through a similar situation.
I also really enjoyed how much you really feel like you are in the caracters mind, you really begin to see things like her even when you put the book down. Very enthralling. It allows you not only empathize with her decisions even though they are ones you know are wrong and ill-advised, but it allows you to sympathize with her as well. Just becuase you are so deeply entwined with her thoughts that they being to seem clear and thought out. Very interesting book. I wouldnt recommend your children read it however, some situations were taken a bit too lightly, and i think it requires the analytical and rational mind of an adult to reflect on and digest with a grain of salt.

With the help of his family Chris started selling audio cassettes out of his rigging bag at rodeos, just as a way to help pay his way down the road. Little did he or anyone else know that after he hung up his bareback rigging and stowed the rigging bag, that he would become a country music sensation, Gold Buckle Dreams: The Life and Times if Chris LeDoux tells not only of Chris's life growing up and on into rodeo, but is has been expanded to include his life after rodeo.

Chris LeDoux: Awesome Read
By Justin Case
Chris was one of a kind. I had the good fortune to interview him for an article I wrote 20 years ago. He was so gracious and full of life. Being a working cowboy myself, we hit it off and remained friends. He was not only a great singer, great cowboy, and a great family man, but a great person, humble yet confident and gracious to anyone he ever met. Mr. Brown does a phenomenal job in presenting Chris LeDoux as he truly was. The writing is exceptional and at many times, one feels like they are actually there sharing the moment. Up and coming rodeo fellas will be inspired. This is a book for anyone interested in learning more about a really good human being. ~R. Justin Case

The Best Rodeo Biography on the Market
By Fred Baker
This is by far the finest rodeo related true story I've ever read. The writing is clear, concise, and to the point. Equally important, Chris LeDoux and the author pull no punches when it comes to saying it like it is. Triumph? Sure, but they included a few embarrassing parts, too, the times when Chris realized his ignorance was costing him during his "learning curve" early years in the sport. Example: Spend the time and money to fly all the way to California from a rodeo in Florida, only to find out the hard way that the bronc he'd drawn in the Golden State was a runaway waste of an entry fee? No problem; the reader gets to learn about that, including the part about the veteran cowboy who laughed at Chris's foolishness before he even got on the plane.

Such things are important for a biography to contain real red meat...and there is plenty of red meat between the covers of this book..

Those who have never paid the high price required to chase the gold buckle are sometimes stunned to realize just what it does take to become a World Champion in any rough stock rodeo event. During my contesting years (which predate Chris), it was not uncommon for the elite "wolves" of the sport to compete in more than 200 rodeos and cover more than 200,000 miles (in the air and over the highways) in a single calendar year. Gold Buckle Dreams does not identify the effort in those specific terms, but it's clear to any reader that only those who survive the crucible become the best in the business. As Chris makes clear, it's also about rodeoing "...smarter, not harder". Add to that the fact that bareback bronc riding is the most "jolting" event of all, and it's not something many of us are built to handle, either physically or psychologically.

Throw in the love of his life, the endless struggle to make a living both during and after his active rodeo years until the first Garth Brooks single mentioned "...an old tape by Chris Ledoux" and made all country music lovers aware of the musician we in rodeo already appreciated. Mix well with Chris's later health struggles, stir in plenty of humor and grace, and...yeah. This book definitely deserves a five star rating. I'd give it ten stars if they were available.

Most of all, if you're a reader who knows absolutely nothing about rodeo but would like to learn a bit, Gold Buckle Dreams is the one to read. You'll learn plenty...and if your heart is not touched by the end of the tale, you're not human.

By Opal Krout
Bought this book when it first came out and was thrilled to find it for my kindle. Now not only do I have his music to listen to, but also the story of his life....could it get any better? I don't thinks so.

Neat Book - Just a Few Editing Issues!
By Donna C.
First, let me say there are many positives to this book. These are absolutely the cutest little amigurumi dogs that I've ever seen (and I own several amigurumi books). They are beyond adorable and the dog breeds are very true to reality; the photographs of the completed projects are beautifully styled as well. This author is obviously a very talented crochet artist. The book includes a 10-page section which shows, in clear step-by-step photographs, how to create one of the dogs in the book; this is definitely a positive. Plus, the book is priced very reasonably. I would not, however, recommend this particular Amigurumi book for a beginner, and here's why.

The book might be confusing to beginners because the terms sew, knit and crochet are used pretty much interchangeably throughout. I did some research and found that in the original Japanese, the word for knit is the same as the word for crochet. So that would certainly explain why a crochet book has a chapter called "Basic Knitting Techniques" that includes the following sentence: "Basically the same sewing method is used for all the crocheted dogs in this book. If you can knit a Japanese Shiba, you can use the same technique for the other types of dogs....". Confusing sentence, isn't it? There's also another chapter titled "For beginners of sewing knitted dogs". Again, very confusing for a beginner to crochet or to Amigurumi, and probably the result of translation by a non-crafter who has little knowledge of crochet or knitting!

Another reviewer pointed out that there are no written instructions; this is true of most Japanese books, which present designs solely in symbol form. There is, however, in addition to the symbol charts, a little table of instructions for each design that lists the rows and what is happening in each row (decreasing, working even, etc.). It's a bit different from American-style written instructions but is pretty readable once you get used to it. One glaring error does occur in the very beginning of the instructional section of the book. It says each design should be started with the highest-numbered row; in fact, each design should begin with the lowest-numbered row.

The book was published in Japan in 2008, and then republished by Harper Design in the USA, with a fairly recent release date of 02/08/11. No errata have been published by Harper on their website as of the date of this review, but hopefully the publisher will consider doing so at some point, as well as clarifying the language in future editions to refer to crochet throughout, not knitting or sewing!

For a beginner who wants to learn this art form, I highly recommend The Complete Idiot's Guide to Amigurumi by June Gilbank. Ami Ami Dogs is a wonderful book for more experienced crocheters.

Enchanting designs, good step by step instructions
By Jean Leinhauser
Yes, the individual pattern instructions are given in Japanese symbols, but if you are a symbol reader (and if you crochet you should be learning these by now!) you'll have no trouble with these.
Excellent photo demonstration for making the Shiba, even including stuffing and sewing on parts.

One page shows photo of all the individual parts for the Shiba, which lets you see how much is involved in making these little cuties. The real trick is in joining the parts to give each
animal its own personality.

Patterns are for specific breeds:Chihuahua, Welsh Corgi, Shiba Inu, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Mini Dachshund, Siberian Husky, Labrador Retriever (currently the most popular breed in the USA), Maltese, Mini Schnauzer, French Bulldog, Beagle and Pug.

Also tells how to adapt each pattern into an attachment for a cell phone or a key ring.

If you want to learn how to make amigrumi, this is a great how-to book.

Very bad directions
By 3dogs1cat
First and foremost the directions in this book are horrible. The words sewing and knitting are interchanged for the word crochet. All of the patterns are charted. There are mistakes within the charted designs. There is a numerical list starting in reverse but it is not complete. The directions want you to start on round 5 and crochet down to round 1. At the end of the numerical list there is a total stitch count. The few dogs that I have attempted to crochet have been extremely difficult. I have been crocheting for 10 years and doing Amigurumi for 5 years. The author is extremely talented. The directions in this book need to fixed. The crochet dogs are cute but you need to have patience and dedication to finish crocheting. I can only give it 1 star because of the bad directions. If you are new to Amigurumi and crocheting this book it not for you.

Indonesian Economic Decolonization in Indonesia in Regional and International Perspective (Verhandelingen van Het Koninklijk Instituut voor

This collection of essays provides insights into the complex process of economic decolonization in Indonesia from a variety of perspectives. The emancipation from Dutch colonialism in the economic sphere is linked to the unique features of the new nation-state emerging in newly independent Indonesia. This included a key role in business for the military. A key part was also played by indigenous Indonesian business firms that were shaped by the Japanese occupation and the Indonesian Revolution. The analysis embraces two types of comparisons. Different experiences of economic decolonization across regions are illustrated by events unfolding in the agricultural estate areas of Deli in North Sumatra and Jember in East Java. Here the focus is on confrontations between private Dutch capital and Indonesian labour unions. In addition, the overall experience of Indonesia is offset against similar processes at work in other former European colonies in Asia, in particular neighbouring Malaysia. The international comparison shows how dramatic and difficult economic decolonization was and also how profound its consequences were. With contributions from Tri Chandra Apriyanto, Anne Booth, Jasper van de Kerkhof, J. Thomas Lindblad (editor), Daan Marks, Peter Post (editor), Bambang Purwanto and Thee Kian Wie.
