About the Author
Donna R. Causey, native of Alabama, spent many years in the classroom teaching students with learning difficulties. Once she retired, she finally had time to follow her passion for discovering little-known or forgotten gems of history. Donna developed the websites www.alabamapioneers.com and www.daysgoneby.me to share and preserve the treasures she found. These websites led to publishing books with her compiled information.� She ventured into the world of historical fiction with her first series, Tapestry of Love. The family's destiny continues in the second series, The Cottinghams, with Discordance. She states: "Facts provided snippets of information into the daily lives of our ancestors and while writing I often imagined and recreated their lives in my mind. After I made a research trip to the Eastern Shore of Virginia and stood on the ground where my first ancestor, young Mary Wilson settled with her husband in 1638, I felt compelled to tell the story of her life. Historical fiction seemed to be the perfect genre since I could use my imagination to fill in the gaps." O, The Stories I Have To Tell...

This fourth book in the Alabama Footprint series is the best so far.

Stories are still disorganized with no cohesion or thematic approach to presentation, but the author does a better job of telling these often interesting and dramatic stories. Could it be that she is improving with age and writing/publishing experience. It appears so.

Still a lot of typos and unattributed quotes but the series is getting better with each volume--so much so that we can look forward to the two new volumes in the series.

Overall, this series is beginning to remind me of Clarke Stallworth's "A Day in the Life of Alabama" series which was good, very good.

(A side note: Can't help but wonder and be amused about how future historians and storytellers such as Ms. Causey will describe the political events and climate of Alabama today, at the beginning of the 21st century: crisis and scandal in all three branches of state government, legislative, executive and judicial. Interesting and juicy times for someone to relate and tell about in years to come. One almost wonders if folks of that day will even believe that something like this could even happen.)

Ghosts in the Fog

Having a grandfather who was a POW of WWII, I grew up with hearing a lot of stories about the war, and that fueled my desire to learn more about the war the older I got. I was really quite shocked when I sat down to read this book, as I hadn't heard anything about Japan's invasion in Alaska during June of 1942 through August of 1943. Quite honestly it made me angry to learn that this invasion could have been voided, and also was covered up by our own country. I thought Samantha Seiple's account of the invasion, and what happened before, during and after this time was well done. I felt she did a great job showing all sides of this story not only from personal accounts, but all recorded accounts as well.

War is not pretty, and often times the enemy is viewed as this horrid monster, but what I found fascinating from some of Seiple's personal accounts that were used in the story is some of the guys on both sides of this war knew each other, and went to school together. Even more surprising is that two of the men who fought against each other ended up becoming friends after the war. While this invasion took lives, and virtually wiped out villages, there were people who arose about the horrible circumstances they were placed in and forgave those who did them wrong. Not only that, Seiple humanized those who fought for Japan, and allowed me to realize that just like some of those who fought for the US, there were man who were forced to fight for Japan, that did not believe in the war.

Those that survived during this time were resilient, courageous American men, and women who did what they had to do to live. I am shocked over what some of them had to endure, not just as the hands of the Japanese, but the brutal elements as well. The heart of this story is of course those Americans who one, didn't know what was happening when the Japanese invaded their islands on the days of June 3rd- 6th, and who virtually had no help from the outside, since the government at that time didn't want the word to get out that Japan had in fact invaded the US. The accounts of those who survived this ordeal are amazing. Their will to survive and sacrifices to save their families, their home and country are amazing.

Sadly it took 15 months for the US to win back the Alaskan islands of Kiska and Attu. Many lives were lost, and homes destroyed. What were once peaceful villages and beautiful islands where decorated with blood shed, fires and bombings.

I felt that Samantha did an amazing job on educating me about this invasion. It was evident to me that she did a lot of in-depth research in order to tell this story for all sides. As a reader, I liked that she was able to make this personal to me by introducing to me a new person during each chapter of this book by given their account from the war, and how their role tied into this invasion. Samantha's use of personal stories, in-depth research, historical records, maps, photographs brought out a wide arranges of emotions for me while I read this harrowing account of the war. Samantha didn't miss a beat with her vivid and often times, harsh descriptions of what the Japanese soldiers did to their American captives, the cruel, and often times unbearable Aleutian weather, how American POW's were treated and the bloody battle that ended Japan's invasion. Not to mention how America ended the war.

Over all this is a story I'd recommend to those who are interested in learning more about WWII. This non-fiction story is educational and very informative. It's a well written, well researched book that gives a detailed account about an invasion that never should have happened, and the consequences that followed it years and years later not just for American's, but for those in Japan and through out the world.

A Riveting Account of Forgotten Bit of WWII History

I was amazed that I'd never heard about this bit of history-- that a U.S. state was occupied by the Japanese during WWII. Did you know that?! Samantha Seiple does a great job at making the history come alive. I found her accounts of the Alaskan citizens who were taken prisoner during this time to be especially riveting... and her account of the battles that took place across Alaska's tough terrain. Overall, a really great read. It's listed for Young Adults and would make a perfect book for a High School history class-- or for anyone, of any age, who is interested in WWII history.

A heart-breaking story powerfully told.

I had no idea that Alaska was invaded by the Japanese during World War II until I heard about this book. I was aware that the weather up there is pretty harsh and just getting to some of the Aleutian Islands is a challenge. I found the book both fascinating and heartbreaking. Books like this are a clear reminder that humans make some really foolish decisions sometimes, like ignoring intelligence that Alaska was a target of the Japanese. Decisions like sending the evacuees from the Aleutians to old abandoned villages that have fallen to pieces and not bothering to take care of them. Here are some things I learned from this book:

The value of maps (lives would have been saved if the U.S. troops had known what they were facing and where they were going)
The value of good intelligence (if the U.S. had had better intelligence and paid better attention to the intelligence they did have the whole thing could have been prevented)
How poorly the Aleuts were treated by both the Japanese and the United States, some of them spent three years in captivity in Japan, where over half of them died, the others were sent to old abandoned settlements that had no clean running water or electricity, where many of them got sick and died, reparations weren't made until the 1980s, to add insult to injury when some of the Aleuts got home they found their houses completely plundered by the American soldiers.

This is what good nonfiction does, opens the reader's eyes to things they didn't know or didn't fully understand. Seiple does a great job of this while making her account clear and easy to read. I highly recommend this one.

Series of pieces tend to be linked by the instruments for which the composer writes, but this is a series in which the pieces are linked instead by the variety of instruments for which Berio composed. The varied approaches taken by the contributors in discussing the pieces demonstrate the richness of this repertoire and the many levels on which Berio and these landmark compositions can be considered. Contributions are arranged under three main headings: Performance Issues; Berio's Compositional Process and Aesthetics; and Analytical Approaches.

I bought this back when it was first released as an ebook, so I can only speak to the content in the book. The information isn't anything new or groundbreaking, and if you are subscribing to any of the video training sites then most of this information should be familiar to you. What the book does well is driving those points home with a ton of well thought out examples.

The bulk of the book is part 2 (beating 200NL) and it does a very good job of breaking down the basic skills you need to beat aggressive 6 max games (stealing, value betting, isolating, 3/4/5 betting, ranging, etc.). I personally found the chapters on value betting and handling opposing aggression to be the most useful chapters in the book. The third part of the book (7 easy steps...) is mostly fluff, but its not very long so its not too bad. Part 4 (beyond 200NL) is good as well, particularly the sections on overbetting and underbetting the flop. Overall I would say I was pleased with the purchase, and I would definitely recommend it to others.

Well written (as are all Ed Miller tomes), clear and concise. You wont' get all the info on your 1st or even 5th read, but you will become a much more proficient no-limit poker player if you learn this material.
Written for online 6-Max games, but just as easily adapted to live full-ring games. Mainly you are taught how to be aggressive to keep up with current no-limit trends.
One of the top 5 poker books I have ever read (own 60+).

Great Thoughts About NL Cash Game Poker

This book really gets you thinking about the fact that you must either have the best hand at showdown or be ready to be aggressive and steal pots. We all know that aggressive play works, but this book hammers the point home. The book focuses on online 6-max play, but the concepts apply to live full ring no-limit hold 'em games.
A great read!

Math for CBP

I bought this book expecting alot from it. Yes, it did help alot, but there were some downs. This book had many mistakes, both arithmetic and grammatical. Sometimes the answers did not match their corresponding letters ( ex: A, B , C, D). And sometimes the answers were as confusing as the questions because it was missing explanations for the answers. Overall, I think it is a good book, the author and publisher should have made a better job of reviewing it before publishing it.

No lo compren. / Do not buy it.

El libro tiene demasiados errores. Tienes la oportunidad de practicar algunos ejercicios pero la mayor�a tienen respuestas err�neas o las opciones que tiene como respuesta correcta no es la misma. En vez de aprender lo que vas a hacer es confundirte. Yo le� los reviews y me arriesgue al comprarlo pero me arrepiento. No lo recomiendo.

The book has too many errors. You get to practice some exercises but most have wrong answers or options whose correct answer is not the same. Instead of learning what you're going to do is get confused. I read the reviews and I risk it to buy it but I regret. Not recommended.

I'm no math wiz but...

...but I was surprised (and a bit disappointed) that some of the solutions were wrong (the numbers weren't the same, math rules had been ignored). While that didn't help my confidence any in the credibility of this book, I gave it 3 stars because if nothing else it is practice. I wish the book had also had a section of rules and equations but that wasn't anything I couldn't look up online or on the official cbp study guide.
