And old hand at this...

I've been keeping freshwater fish (and just about everything else that ever tooled about the freshwater environment at one time or another) for a long, LONG time, and I've found this text to be as authoritative and reader-friendly as books can get. Simply stated, the novice can learn all he or she needs to about a species or genera of fish in order to successfully keep that species in captivity, while the advanced hobbyist has at his or her fingers an unparalleled resource text in this book. As an expert whose knowledge is certainly limited, I've found this book to be a sort of catch-all text that answers most any question I might have about the freshwater species of fishes. More so even than that, I consider this book a reference text in that when I go to the local fish shop and I see something I've never seen before, I can come home, reference my Encyclopedia of Freshwater Fishes, and come away with a solid understanding of the species that I just encountered for the first time; I don't have to rely on the "guess and pray" information given me by the pet shop's clerk, I can simply rely on this book to fill in the gaps and bridge the information-gulfs that stand between me and my chosen species of captive fish.

While the above information is simply my amateur opinion on the information the text provides, the following is my professional take on the book as published work. My name is Phil Purser, and many of you may have read my books on Moray Eels, Green Treefrogs, or Garter & Ribbon Snakes. I've been writing on fish & reptiles/amphibians for over a half-decade, and I know what is good and what sucks when it comes to the pet trade. I've read myriad books by "authors" who couldn't find their noses in the dark, and I've read authoritative books by the leading minds of the field, and I can honestly say that, after reading this book from the front cover to the back, this text is one book that will stay one my personal shelves for years and years to come. The information in it is up-to-date, accurate, and timeless (of course nomenclature can change, but the care of each species is pretty well fixed). When you've got all the information you'll ever need in one book, why would you ever reach for another?

The authors of this book are some of the best in the field...better even than myself. Despite my decades of experience studying and writing about fishes, I still defer my questions and inquiries to men such as Glen Axelrod and Brian Scott. Any hobbyist who keeps his or her fingers on the pulse of the freshwater aquarium hobby will attest to the expertise of these scholars; they know their stuff!

I guess what I'm saying is that if an old expert like me can enjoy and reference a book so much as I have this text, then ANYONE who is even remotely interested in the keeping and understanding of freshwater fishes can certianly learn from and relish a book like this one. I honestly believe that a book to rival this one in scope and depth of knowledge will be written for a long, long time to come.

Disappointing

I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.

Best in a long time

I've been anticipating the release of this text for a while, and, now that I own a copy of it, I can say without reservation that it is one of the best encyclopedias to freshwater fosh that I own; and I own MANY such texts. In the old days of fish books, the publisher would simply recycle old information and slap a new cover on it in order to sell it as a "new" title. This book breaks that mold. It's authored by renowned fish experts Axelrod & Scott, and the range of information it provides is AWESOME!! Most books on this topic give scant coverage to a broad range of species, but this text gives you a double-handful of information on a LOT of species. Everything fro Bichirs to Cichlids, from Characins to Corydorias, from Poecilidae to... You name it, it's here!

The point is, this book is a solid text from cover to cover. It has a few typos in it but, hell, I just read Stephen King's latest book and I found more than a few grammar mistakes in it, too. So anyone who is a devout fish hobbyist, and who can overlook one or two grammatical mistakes, will definitely be patting themselves on the back for purchasing this book. In the few weeks that I've owned it, I've already used it as reference material more than all my other fish books combined. You cannot go wrong with this atlas of freshwater fishes.

Death comes like a thief in the night, as anyone can attest. One of the saddest consequences of the demise of a loved one is having to settle his or her affairs. Invariably, it is in the hour of our deepest grief that we discover our loved one's personal failing when it comes to having everything organized for the executor. As Good as you'd think it would be

I was so happy when I heard she was coming to Power 105 as I was not the biggest Hot 97 fan and was equally excited for this book to come out. I'm a fast reader and as soon as this downloaded to my kindle,I dove in head first. Admittedly though I'm not done with it but I can tell you that this book is great & easily gets 5 stars. A real hip hop fan will love this memoir.And truth be told,I think any fan of radio personalities and music in general will love this. I'll be done with it in a day or so,it's that good. Simply put,great read by a great person and even greater icon in hip hop. Buy this,you'll love it!

I grew up in the era where Hot 97 started as a freestyle station and went it went hip hop I was like Oh noooo where will I hear Judy Torres again??!! Anyway. A Jersey girl who grew up in the same era as Angie, Im SO happy I read this, bc Ill be honest - her move to Power made me question her loyalty....

What can I say? She seems as loyal - ethical - and kind as they come...This was the feel I always got from her on 97, and I could tell any artist on air had an upmost respect for her.

Loved to hear her upbringing in NY her time down in Florida jamming to Miami Bass (haha) and her growth from child to woman, despite the BS. She dabbled as we all did was so honest, and real...and I didnt put the book down til I got to WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED WHEN SHE WENT TO POWER...and it all made sense..

She is beautiful, smart, not a girlie girl and high maintenance. And I relate to her so much....I guess alot of us in the tristate may - but seriously - funny parts, sad parts, just real parts (Tupac interview got to me) and anyway...all of it. Loved it....The Voice of NYC - Love you Angie!!! Congratulations on your success with this memoir. You are loved by us, too. Besitos!!!

I'm a really big fan of biographies and I love the "overcoming" factor. This book for me was only ok though. Although there were some great moments in the hip hop culture discussed, overall Angie's story didn't really fascinate me. Not to take anything from what Angie has achieved and what she represents, obviously she is a "big deal", but the story itself didn't really leave an impression.

A book for a lifetime

There is a famous sketch by Henry Fuseli called "The artist moved by the grandeur of ancient ruins." It shows a tiny mortal figure weeping beside the fragments of a colossal statue. The reader of Sewall's life of Emily Dickinson will find himself in that mortal's place.
This is a book to buy and keep and turn to again and again. Whenever you need to remind yourself what the English language can do, open a page at random and ED will show you. On her own confusion: "I am out with lanterns, looking for myself." On youth: "when I was but an unsifted girl, and you so scholarly." On Shakespearean partings: "I read them in the garret and the rafters wept."
Sewall's scholarship is impeccable, his writing graceful, his sympathy and critical engagement exemplary. If you don't own any volumes of Dickinson's poetry, this biography can serve as a "selected works" since it contains many of the poems and letters in their entirety. Don't deny yourself the pleasure of possessing this book.

Not really a biography

I have just read this book and enjoyed it thoroughly. However, the title is somewhat misleading, as this is not a conventional biography. Other than a few chapters on her childhood and early education, the book is arranged in "theme" chapters, each focussing on a particular person or aspect of her life, illustrated, and heavily annotated, with letters and poems related to that theme.

I ended the book with more questions about her life than I had at the beginning. Many of them are barely addressed in the book, or just hinted at. Perhaps the book was intended for readers who are already very familiar with the biographical details.

Just as one example, the author mentions several times the eye problem that led to one of Emily's rare trips away from her home for treatement in Boston. I kept thinking that sooner or later some further details about this eye problem would be revealed, but there was never more than a few widely scattered sentences about it. Perhaps there isn't enough evidence to be able to conjecture as to the nature of the problem, but the author doesn't even seem to think it's an important enough detail to require a weighing of the evidence.

Likewise her mother's long illness, which played a role in Emily's withdrawal from the world, is mentioned but its nature is not discussed, other than a mention that she was paralyzed near the end of her life. Did she suffer a stroke? Was she lucid? Since Emily was her primary caregiver, it would seem that these details might bear on her own emotional state during the years of this illness and would warrant at least some speculation.

Even Emily's own final illness remains a mystery. We learn that her sister blamed it on the ill treatment received from her sister-in-law, and that her doctor attributed it to "nerves". However, from other hints, it seems to be a progessively debilitating illness. There is never as much as a paragraph in the entire book which speculates on the nature of this fatal illness or how much she might have been incapacitated between the first attack in June 1884 and her death in May 1885. "Nerves" seems to me to be an insufficient explanation for the death of the poet after an illness of eleven months. Are we sure the fainting spell was related to the final illness? Was she ill for the entire eleven months? For how long was she bedridden? The author doesn't even pose these questions.

In a book of 821 pages, there is no index entry for "illness". "Death [of ED]" has 7 widely scattered and brief entries, one of which is a footnote, one of which is a 13-sentence entry on how her death affected her brother, one of which is the text of her obituary and three of which describe her funeral(on pages 273, 575 and 667, to show how scattered they are). The seventh entry refers to her obituary, but seems to be a mistake, as I find no mention of her death or obituary on the page cited.

The book is especially good on the life of her brother Austin, and is also good on her father. Her mother and sister remain mysterious, probably because they were not much more exposed to public scrutiny than Emily herself was. It is obvious that her sister was nearly as much of a recluse as Emily, or at least was perceived as such by their neighbors.

In such a scattered book, there is inevitably a good deal of repetition of details. The three mentions of Emily's funeral cited above, for example, are mostly identical. Poems are also quoted in part or in their entirety multiple times.

There is an index of the poems and the pages on which they are discussed, which is useful for understanding the context of some of these, although the author acknowledges that the dating of the poems presents many problems.

There is a chronology at the beginning of the book, which really is the closest there is to a temporal ordering of the poet's life. I would suggest photocopying it and using it as a bookmark, because there is little chronological ordering, even within chapters at times. I found myself asking such things as, "Was this before her brother's marriage or after? Was her father still alive when this happened?" As a matter of fact, because I didn't have the chronology in front of me, I was surprised to realize, when I had almost finished the book, that Emily's father was still alive during the period of her most intense literary activity. After the early chapter devoted to her father's life, he is not often mentioned again, and I had somehow remained with the impression that he had died much earlier in her life.

Much as I enjoyed this book, I am left wanting another book to fill in the gaps. However, I learned enough about the partisanal nature of her biographers to be wary of choosing one.

A juicy mammoth of a book!

Although I haven't yet finished reading Richard B. Sewalls mammoth saga, I fully expect to one day, and I've certainly read enough to realize that this is the single most important biography of Dickinson that we have, and unlikely ever to be bettered.
One thing that strikes me is Sewall's wonderful knack of bringing the various actors in this strange domestic drama vividly before us, and making them real and believable. The marvelous collection of illustrations in this book also help make the world of Amherst real to us.
The book is comprehensive and a mine of interesting facts about anything and everything to do with Emily Dickinson, and is happily free of the unctuousness of Thomas H. Johnson's earlier biography. Besides being richly illustrated with an abundance of photographs, it is also well-written, incredibly well-researched, and is a pleasure to read, being well-printed on excellent smooth paper.
In other words, Sewall's prize-winning biography is essential reading for all students of Dickinson, and is no doubt destined for a wide readership in its compact new paperback format which conveniently gives us Sewall's two volumes in one.
