Arrived earlier than expected!

Not user-friendly as a textbook

I expect a textbook to be easily usable as a reference tool, and the format of this book did not meet that criteria. Overall, I found this book very challenging to use as a textbook. There are no chapter summaries or chapter indices for vocabulary introduced in each chapter. When a new word is introduced, the text is merely italicized, not bold-face, so it is difficult to find when searching for a reference. The paragraphs are also rather long, and the material is a bit dry and tends to ramble. On the positive, there are a lot of external sources inserted at the ends of the chapters (excerpts from books and movies) that give more "real-life" examples of the concepts in practice.

A great book which deals with Ethics and philosophers.

I read and studied this book during my third year at UCO. This was our text book for the semester. The class was called "Contemporay Moral Problems" dealing with philosophers and their beliefs in ethics and morals. Religion, women, and right and wrong is covered in this book. This is a great book for anyone who wants to know more on ethics and philosophers

A Mess, Biased, and Mediocre

I recently came across this unfortunate mess of a textbook. A couple of observations:

In an effort to be 'all things to all people' this textbook ends up doing nothing well.
It tries to take a topical approach, but mixes in ancient, modern, eastern, and western views in an almost incoherent way without rhyme or reason to the order of the chapters.

It also includes lots of material that aren't properly part of ethics. Plato's theory of the forms and such. It's good background material, but it really breaks up the continuity of the book.

It tries to be 'relevant' by adding some film analogies at the end of each chapter. A few of these are well done, but others are completely off. For example, The Truman Show is compared to Plato's Myth of the Cave. This completely misses the point of the movie since it is an existentialist metaphor designed to show the thought of Jean Paul Sartre (one of the main characters even dresses like him). Furthermore, something like 'The Matrix' or 'The 13th Floor' would have been infinitely more effective for this illustration.

Along the same theme, there is some rather mediocre 'philosophy of narrative' given early in the book. While I love using stories to make ethical points and illustrations, this section again detracts from the continuity of the book. If you want to teach ethical theory, find a better book. I prefer The Moral Life by Pojman.

There are also some blatantly biased sections. For example, in the chapter on 'Virtue Ethics' two Anti-Christian stories from the fifth century are shared and presented as examples of religious terrorism. What this has to do with virtue ethics is beyond me. Furthermore, these tragic crimes are misattributed to 'Christian Fundamentalists' (bizzare since fundamentalism is invented in the early to mid 20th century as a response against "liberal Christianity'). Clearly the author has an axe to grind.

About the Author

Shannon Sanders McDonald is a practicing architect, and author of The Parking Garage: Design and Evolution of a Modern Urban Form. The book was the basis for an exhibit "House of Cars" at the National Building Museum. McDonald is a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture, where she was awarded a Business and Professional Women’s Scholarship. She is an assistant professor of architecture at Southern Illinois University.

Ms. McDonald has written numerous articles on various aspects of parking, architecture, planning, energy, sustainability, the environment, and transportation.She has given presentations at the meetings of a number of organizations, including the Library of Congress, The National Building Museum, The Congress for New Urbanism, Advanced Transit Association, The American Institute of Architects, Smithsonian and the National Transportation Research Board.

The Parking Garage

This is a very thorough look on much neglected aspects of architecture, transportation, and urban planning. I come from the transportaion world and found the book quite helpful in many areas from the havoc autos (and of course the where to park them problem) encountered in every urban core especially those that were built pre-auto. Given the sheer cost and land needed for providing parking in an auto dominated America this is a well timed book. It relates to congestion, sprawl, quality of living, city aesthetics, and indirectly with energy and pollution issues. It's estimated that parking costs as much as the US defense budget, but the costs are almost entirely hidden. The book gives a great blend of bringing these elements together. Not only is it an eye opening read but I recommend it as reference source for those invloved in urban planning, transportation, and urban architecture in both the light of the history, the current status, and assisting in envisioning better ways in the future.

This book is an amazing overview of the parking garage typology and it is the architectural compliment to the several excellent more engineering and planning books oriented books on the topic. Vividly illustrated with over 350 images, 312 pages, most in color, the amazing evolution of the typolgy is explored and throughily discussed within architectural concepts showing visions never seen before. Ten chapters cover all the key issues related to architectural typolgies and the final chapter presents amazing ideas and visions of the future. Highlighting sustainable ideas for new movement machines - car and transit, from the past and into the future and how they will be parked begins to present transformations to our urban environment for the future. Ideas are postitioned within solid reasearch and architectural intellectual discussions of man and machine. Many other books are referenced and the endnotes and further readings provide an extensive source for all students, architects, engineers, and planners.

And old hand at this...

I've been keeping freshwater fish (and just about everything else that ever tooled about the freshwater environment at one time or another) for a long, LONG time, and I've found this text to be as authoritative and reader-friendly as books can get. Simply stated, the novice can learn all he or she needs to about a species or genera of fish in order to successfully keep that species in captivity, while the advanced hobbyist has at his or her fingers an unparalleled resource text in this book. As an expert whose knowledge is certainly limited, I've found this book to be a sort of catch-all text that answers most any question I might have about the freshwater species of fishes. More so even than that, I consider this book a reference text in that when I go to the local fish shop and I see something I've never seen before, I can come home, reference my Encyclopedia of Freshwater Fishes, and come away with a solid understanding of the species that I just encountered for the first time; I don't have to rely on the "guess and pray" information given me by the pet shop's clerk, I can simply rely on this book to fill in the gaps and bridge the information-gulfs that stand between me and my chosen species of captive fish.

While the above information is simply my amateur opinion on the information the text provides, the following is my professional take on the book as published work. My name is Phil Purser, and many of you may have read my books on Moray Eels, Green Treefrogs, or Garter & Ribbon Snakes. I've been writing on fish & reptiles/amphibians for over a half-decade, and I know what is good and what sucks when it comes to the pet trade. I've read myriad books by "authors" who couldn't find their noses in the dark, and I've read authoritative books by the leading minds of the field, and I can honestly say that, after reading this book from the front cover to the back, this text is one book that will stay one my personal shelves for years and years to come. The information in it is up-to-date, accurate, and timeless (of course nomenclature can change, but the care of each species is pretty well fixed). When you've got all the information you'll ever need in one book, why would you ever reach for another?

The authors of this book are some of the best in the field...better even than myself. Despite my decades of experience studying and writing about fishes, I still defer my questions and inquiries to men such as Glen Axelrod and Brian Scott. Any hobbyist who keeps his or her fingers on the pulse of the freshwater aquarium hobby will attest to the expertise of these scholars; they know their stuff!

I guess what I'm saying is that if an old expert like me can enjoy and reference a book so much as I have this text, then ANYONE who is even remotely interested in the keeping and understanding of freshwater fishes can certianly learn from and relish a book like this one. I honestly believe that a book to rival this one in scope and depth of knowledge will be written for a long, long time to come.

Disappointing

I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.

Best in a long time

I've been anticipating the release of this text for a while, and, now that I own a copy of it, I can say without reservation that it is one of the best encyclopedias to freshwater fosh that I own; and I own MANY such texts. In the old days of fish books, the publisher would simply recycle old information and slap a new cover on it in order to sell it as a "new" title. This book breaks that mold. It's authored by renowned fish experts Axelrod & Scott, and the range of information it provides is AWESOME!! Most books on this topic give scant coverage to a broad range of species, but this text gives you a double-handful of information on a LOT of species. Everything fro Bichirs to Cichlids, from Characins to Corydorias, from Poecilidae to... You name it, it's here!

The point is, this book is a solid text from cover to cover. It has a few typos in it but, hell, I just read Stephen King's latest book and I found more than a few grammar mistakes in it, too. So anyone who is a devout fish hobbyist, and who can overlook one or two grammatical mistakes, will definitely be patting themselves on the back for purchasing this book. In the few weeks that I've owned it, I've already used it as reference material more than all my other fish books combined. You cannot go wrong with this atlas of freshwater fishes.

Como matrimonio se radicaron en la ciudad de C�rdoba, donde fueron activos en la iglesia y luego pastorearon una congregaci�n en aquella ciudad durante 16 a�os.
