Studies of Civil War maps usually focus on handsome, postbattle maps of battlefields. . . . While these maps explain how a battle was fought, they do nothing to help us answer the questions about why a battle or campaign was conducted as it was." I was expecting maps I could read and use...they're not

I was hoping and expecting to see some great maps I could use in my Civil War reading and study. They are not that. The maps are so small (can we say font size 2 or even less) for the most part, so faded, and so crowded with detail that I find them essentially unusable for what I wanted. I live in Yorktown, Virginia, for instance, and had a hard time trying to figure out what was what on that map when I know all the landmarks. The text is mostly about the history of map making during that era. Interesting enough but not a high priority on my reading list now. There are a number of nice period photographs which are fine. Still, with what I was needing and expecting, I am disappointed. I would not recommend the book unless you want to know about making maps during the Civil War rather than using Civil War era maps as maps.

An artifact as well as a tool

Even though the maps are copies, you have the feel of owning and holding critical tools of this period of American history. The map descriptions are much more thorough than just giving the date and place where the map was used. The method of binding is good. This is one of my favorite Civil War volumes.

Although he breaks no new ground, Lockwood (a Harvard professor emeritus in music and a leading Beethoven scholar) does offer an extremely cogent account of the works as they relate to the well-known three phases of Beethoven's remarkable creative life. It's appropriate that the title places the music first, because it is Lockwood's highly observant account of the composer's musical development that will strike readers most forcibly. There is nothing much new to say about the life, and here Lockwood only goes through the motions, pausing only to observe that despite all the speculation, it is doubtful that Beethoven ever enjoyed the physical love of a woman, notwithstanding his many infatuations and sometimes passionate letters. On the music, however, he has many fine insights, particularly into Beethoven's very conscious and determined development of his skills, and his often-neglected splendor as a melodist. A regular Beethoven listener could do worse than use Lockwood's accounts of the works, particularly the middle and late ones-he's inclined to give scant shrift to anything before the Opus 18 quartets-as concert or record notes, written at exactly the right pitch for knowledgeable music lovers who don't have a score in front of them. Lockwood is also thorough regarding the impact of such previous masters as Handel, Bach, Mozart and Haydn on Beethoven's art. Many illustrations not seen by PW; in an unusual extra, about 100 musical examples linked to the book are available on a dedicated Web site.

A recognized authority on Beethoven, Lockwood (music, emeritus, Harvard) concentrates primarily on his subject's music and development as a composer before dedicating separate chapters to biography and the historical, political, and cultural milieus. This particularly refreshing approach, modeled on Abraham Pasis's "Subtle Is the Lord": The Science and the Life of Albert Einstein and Nicholas Boyle's Goethe: The Poet and the Age, differs from other recent studies that focused more on Beethoven's life (e.g., Barry Cooper's Beethoven and Maynard Solomon's Beethoven). All of Lockwood's narrative, including the discussion of specific compositions, will be accessible to serious music lovers with only a modest technical background. This results partly from an interesting innovation, especially pleasing to specialists-100 additional musical examples are available on a companion web site (www.wwnorton.com/ trade/lockwood), allowing the author to be far less technical in his discussion. Lockwood's study offers a new and authoritative interpretation of a prodigiously gifted and complex man and artist who saw himself as Mozart's heir. Beethoven linked the Classical and Romantic periods in music. His early compositions reflected Mozart's influence and the example of the mature Haydn's work. Creativity, imagination, an acute mind, and a musical ear led Beethoven to explore new formal and harmonic structures, and his middle period includes most of his string quartets, piano sonatas, and symphonies--vehicles of his exploration. In his last period he produced his most romantic and grandest pieces. Lockwood relies upon Beethoven's sketchbooks, diaries, conversation books (used when he was very deaf), and letters to show how Beethoven developed his music. He provides background on historical and political events, including the French Revolution and rise of Napoleon, that influenced Beethoven. Along with some 50 music examples that are available on a Web site, Lockwood analyzes Beethoven's major compositions and shows how his musical thought grew. Coherent and eminently readable, this is a book that will complete anyone's understanding of one of the most innovative composers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, who remains influential and popular today. it's a great book.

4.5 Stars - Very insightful book. A must read for anyone interested in classical music. Tells you everything you need to know about Beethoven. Lockwood writes with clear and informative prose. The book is also very well researched and organized. The only reason I have to knock off a half star is because I wish Lockwood would have spent more time talking about Beethoven's personal life. The book is about 75% music, 25% bio. Personally, I would have preferred to have more biography, and less music analysis. But that's just me. Overall though, it's a great book.

About the Author
Jo Sprague is professor emeritus of Communication Studies at San Jose State University, where she also served as associate director of the Center for Faculty Development and Support. In addition, she is a former president of the Western States Communication Association. Her research focuses on critiquing, teaching, and the scholarship of speech communications.

Douglas Stuart is Vice President of Technical and Marketing Publications at FirstTel Systems Corporation.

David Bodary is a professor of Communication at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, where he teaches public speaking and coordinates the Service Learning office. He belongs to both the National Communication Association (NCA) and the Central States Communication Association. Dr. Bodary has served in a variety of roles for both organizations and is pleased to have participated in the NCA Learning Outcomes in Communication project. He earned his bachelor's from Eastern Michigan University and a master's and doctorate from Wayne State University.

Good Gift For the Neighbor Kids Who Are Going to Church Camp

[[VIDEOID:6f6426c0897b150c7f17f12d03244275]] Too many adult coloring books that I've tried -- and there are many of them on the market now -- can hardly compare to regular coloring books. By this I'm not referring to the potty-mouthed nature of adult coloring books, but to the actual page designs. A good coloring book is defined by bounded regions, firm lines, and clever patterning. This book the first "adult" version that absolutely has that combination. It's funny and a good coloring book.

As for the neighbor kids, I think they'd love this coloring book. Or just cut out a page and insert it into any regular coloring book. That's always fun.

A way to have fun and to relax

There are many dozens of books like this one. The idea, I think, is two-fold. First, lots of people feel it is fun to deal with swear words, either to say them or see them, or to read them in novels. Second, psychologists have discovered that articulating swear words can be relaxing, release tension.
This book has twenty-five swear words, including words I never heard before. Each is surrounded and part of a design. If people take the time to color the design, it is likely that they will find the activity relaxing.

Nice floral designs around filthy words!

This book offers a nice variety of designs with swear words ranging from simple designs centered on the page to full page designs that will take more time to complete. Most of the designs are floral, and a few have little animals around the words. I used Caran D'ache colored pencils to color the page I uploaded.

Overall, I like the designs, but the reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of the quality of the line art. Some of the lines are so tiny, fuzzy, and close together that there is no way you could color between them. Also, quite a few designs are pixelated as if they were scanned in at a low resolution. And a few designs have speckles that almost look like dirt in the image (see my photos). This may not bother other people, but I have spent my career in the graphics/publishing industry and it really bothers me to see poor line/image quality.

-25 down-right dirty swear word designs are printed on the front of the page only--nothing on the back
-Bright white paper (same as all the Amazon Createspace publications)
-Pages are not perforated
-Designs are suitable for markers (some pages will require a fine tip), colored pencils, and gel pens.
-Markers may bleed through, so use a blank page as a "color protector page".
-Glossy front and back covers

Pretty good

This is a pretty good book. It showed me another view of the recovery industry. Which is my area of work, but on the skip tracing side. Definitely a good read if you're starting out in the recovery business.

Alan Sears is Professor of Sociology at Ryerson University, Toronto. He is the author of Retooling the Mind Factory: Education in a Lean State (UTP, 2003) and co-author with James Cairns of The Democratic Imagination (UTP, 2012).


James Cairns is Assistant Professor in the Contemporary Studies Department at Wilfrid Laurier University, Brantford. He is the co-author, with Alan Sears, of The Democratic Imagination (UTP, 2012).
