About the Author
David Abraham Adler (born April 10, 1947) is the author of nearly 200 books for children and young adults, most notably the Cam Jansen mystery series, the "Picture Book of..." series, and several acclaimed works about the Holocaust for young readers. Adler was born in New York City, New York. He graduated from Queens College in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics and education. For the next nine years, he worked as a mathematics teacher for the New York City Board of Education, while taking classes towards a master's degree in marketing, a degree he was awarded by New York University in 1971. In that same year, a question from his then-three-year-old nephew inspired Adler to write his first story, A Little at a Time, subsequently published by Random House in 1976. Adler's next project, a series of math books, drew on his experience as a math teacher. In 1977, he created his most famous character, Cam Jansen, originally featured in Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Stolen Diamonds, which was published that year. Adler married psychologist Renee Hamada in 1973, and their first child, Michael, was born in 1977. By that time Adler had taken a break from teaching and, while his wife continued her work, he stayed home, took care of Michael, and began a full-time writing career. Adler has three children and one grandson. He lives in Woodmere, New York.

Robert Casilla was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to parents from Puerto Rico. Like many children, Robert always loved to draw. As the new kid in his second grade class, he recalls doing a drawing of two birds with colored chalk on construction paper. His teacher noticed the drawing and then told the class, "We have an artist in the class!" Robert is thankful to her and all the teachers that motivated and helped him realize he had talent as an artist. Although he grew up in New Jersey, he did get to attend school in Puerto Rico as a fourth grader.

His formal training in art took place at the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he earned a BFA degree.

Since 1984, Robert has worked as a freelance illustrator for magazines, book publishers, postage stamps, educational publishers and others.

He has illustrated over 25 children's books, many of which are picture book biographies of people such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks and John F. Kennedy. He has also illustrated many multicultural children's books such as Jalapeno Bagels, The Little Painter of Sabana Grande, The Legend of Mexicatl and First Day in Grapes which won the Pura Belpr� Honor Award.

Robert visits many schools to talk about the visual journey a story takes him through to come up with the illustrations for his books. He also teaches art to young gifted artist one day a week.

Robert lives and works from his home in New Fairfield, Connecticut with his wife and two children, 3 cats and his feisty shih tzu dog.

Great for special education!

My husband is a special education teacher. He bought this to present to his students. It does a great job at giving special education students access to the content that other students will get from longer stories about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is very easily readable, and it has great illustrations to depict the way Martin Luther King's life was during the time of the civil rights movements. His students really enjoyed the text and illustrations, and the book also provided them with a very convenient timeline of the important dates of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. My husband and I will be added this book to our daughters' book collection for when they are older.

My daughter loves this book

My five-year-old daughter was fascinated with this book even though it didn't include fairies, animals, or dinosaurs. I was very happy with the information they presented which gives some basic information about Dr. King while not treating his death in such a way that might overly upset sensitive children like mine. The illustrations are wonderfully done and my daughter looked them over carefully for a long time. It is a wonderful opportunity to launch more discussions about racism and the way we treat other people because of their gender, race, or religion.

Excellent first biography

The entire "A picture book of..." biography series byDavid Adler is outstanding. Perfect for lower elementary studentsdoing their first real report. Makes a great read-aloud for non-readers as they are easily completed in one sitting. They are loaded with information including a timeline of important dates. The illustrations in this book are not cartoon-like as in his other biographies of Washington or Lincoln, but are appealing to young children.

About the Author

Rhys Bowen is the New York Times bestselling author of more than thirty mystery novels. Wonderful World War 2 story

This is the best Kindle First book I have read. Rhys Bowen’s Her Royal Spyness series is so much fun to read, and I read the newest book in the series as soon as it comes out. Accordingly, I was so excited to learn she had written a stand-alone novel that takes place during World War 2 (which is one of my favorite eras). Bowen did not disappoint – In Farleigh Field was a delight from beginning to end. I hesitated slightly when I first opened the novel because she includes a list of all of the characters upfront. I have generally found that means there are too many characters for me to keep up with, but that was not the case at all for In Farleigh Field. The central plot of the novel involves the ancestral home of Lord Westerham, Farleigh Place, which is serving as headquarters for one of the British armed forces groups. Lord Westerham has five daughters, three of whom play large roles in the story, Pamela, Margot and Phoebe. Pamela works at Bletchly Park breaking German codes, Margot is in Paris working for the French Resistance, and Phoebe is at home (she’s only 12) and discovers the body of a soldier whose parachute failed as he tried to land near Farleigh Place. There are various subplots that develop with these and other characters as the story progresses and eventually a number of them tie together very effectively. The resolution of each plot line was very realistic and convincing.

Bowen’s exhaustive research is evident, and the tidbits she includes really add to the storyline. I loved learning about the group of aristocrats that supported Hitler and created a group to try and make peace with Germany (she calls them the Ring in the novel; in actuality she explains in her Author’s Note that they were called the Link). The MI5 and Bletchly Park details were fascinating too. I highly recommend this novel and was so glad I got the chance to read it.

I always am excited about the first day of the month and what the Kindle First program will offer. I chose IN FARLEIGH FIELD because I felt it was time to read some historical fiction. While I enjoyed it and there was no question there was a great deal of research that went into the book, I must say it is not an easy read. Inspired by events of World War II, this family saga draws the reader into the dreadful days of the war with believable characters, a riveting plot and what was surprising to me - non-stop action. The plot involves the family home of Lord Westerham, Farleigh Place, which are the headquarters for a British armed forces group. Lord Westerham has 5 daughters, three of whom play a large part in the novel, Margot, Pamela and Phoebe. Margot is in Paris working for the French Resistance, Pamela works breaking German codes and the youngest Phoebe discovers the body of a soldier whose parachute failed when he tried to land near Farleigh Place. As the body arouses suspicion - MI5 operative and family friend Ben Cresswell is confidentially asked to investigate who the deceased is as he has no identification and work out whether he is in fact a German spy... and this is where the action seriously begins. There are many subplots that develop as the story progresses and they weave together well. The first half of the book is filled with characters’ individual stories which were interesting, but does require intense concentration however it is the last 100 pages where everything takes off and were totally action packed. It has a bit of romance as well. Overall, a good mystery that takes the reader down an action packed path. It is unputdownable and quite unique - a great Kindle First choice. 4.5 Stars from me.

Enjoyable read. A look into the lives of the English upper crust and how they and even their daughters helped the war effort. Involves some spying and a look into code breaking. Refreshingly devoid of vulgar language, graphic sex, and graphic violence. Could be classified as Historical Fiction/Mystery, as there is a traitor in their midst.

An Expensive Mistake

Please do not waste the money that this book costs. It is EXTREMELY basic, it is your typical large font, basic book. Money would be better spend on an Accounting for Dummies book. It doesn't elaborate on anything. Let me give you an example. The taxation of depreciation recapture section is HALF a page long and it can be misleading/bordering on wrong, if you are relying on it in any sort of way. Large section of the book is dedicated just to talking a generalized overview of GAAP accounting.

The book contains a lot of useful and accurate information on Real Estate Accounting and Taxation without being overly technical.

Another "Must Read"!

I devour Westerns, cowboys and just about anything Lisa Mondello writes so choosing to read “Wild Dakota Heart” was pretty much a no brainer. Let me preface by saying I’ve read . . . and loved . . . ALL the titles in the Dakota Hearts series. Did that make my expectations higher for "Wild Dakota Heart"? Perhaps … but only because Lisa has yet to disappoint me. And she still hasn't.

"Wild Dakota Heart" is one more example of how this talented author has perfected the contemporary western romance for short novel addicts like myself. Let’s start with the opening line.

Ten years of doing right didn’t erase one moment of stupid in the course of a man’s life.

That sentence just resonated with me. Funny, witty and on target. But that's part of what makes Lisa’s novels so addictive . . . her characters are realistic and her stories sizzle.

So far, the Dakota Hearts series has used Rudolph, South Dakota as their geographical North Star, and featured men from the McKinnon family, all alpha males. Reading about this group of hunky men is like opening a box of fine chocolates . . . each one is delicious in its own way and offers a very unique flavor.

So back to the story. After serving 8 years as a Navy Seal, Ethan McKinnon decides to return home and start over. He would like to repair the relationship with his best friend’s kid sister, Maddie Newton and hopes repairing her brother Denny's motorcycle might lead to a reconcilliation. But Maddie holds him responsible for Denny's death years earlier. She wants nothing to do with Ethan. Like all McKinnon men, however, Ethan can’t . . . or won’t take NO for an answer, and uses Denny's last wishes of taking the bike to Sturgis as emotional blackmail.

The sexual chemistry between these two is undeniable and unavoidable. It takes a bit of doing to overcome the grief and regret on both sides, and once the unraveling begins, it creates a few more issues to be resolved. All part of the wonderful angst that Lisa Mondello threads so effortlessly into each of her novels.

"Wild Dakota Heart" is a must read for fans of The Dakota Hearts series. If this is your first sample of the passionate McKinnon men, then you're sure to love the rest of these short, spicy, delectable novels.

After a tragic Accident took the life of his best friend Denny's, Ethan left to join the Navy and ended up becoming a Navy Seal.

Maddie, Denny's sister blamed Ethan for her Brother's death. At the funeral she slapped Ethan, making a scene accusing him of leaving Denny to die alone after the accident.

Years later, Ethan is now the Sherrif and comes upon Maddie after she has an accident. She still blames him for Denny's death and wants nothing to do with Ethan. However, Ethan has kept a secret all these years about what really happened the day Denny died. He struggles with this secret as his feelings for Maddie grows.

I really enjoyed this book. I think it was my favorite of all the books so far. I thought I had guessed the secret but was shocked when I learned what it really was once Ethan finally told Maddie the truth.

Very good read.

A short but sweet tale of wonderful romance. In book #1, Her Dakota Man, we met Logan, then in #2, Regis and Hawk. Then we see Sam and Summer, and here, Ethan and Maddie, very sweet. There is huge sadness in this short story as Maddie has never settled about how her brother, Ethan's best friend, died. Ethan moved on to be a Navy Seal and then cop, to fill his grieving heart. These two are meant to be together. Enjoy.

If you want to think about life and appreciate its nuances, then this is a book you will enjoy. If you're looking for a page turning, plot driven beach-read, this isn't for you. This book is so rich in vividness and thoughtfulness that I can't read a lot at one time. I read a chapter or two or three and then put it down and ruminate for a couple of days (while reading something a lighter). Sometimes the life in these pages seems more vivid than the one I am leading. Here is a girl discovering, with passion, what it is to be alive. And, here is a book that can remind you what that discovery felt like and put a bit of it back in your life.

Like looking through someone's picture window at night

The first time I read An American Childhood I was so thrilled I wanted everyone I knew to read it too. It is one of the handful of books that I will keep on the bookshelf by my bed for the rest of my life. (That shelf also includes Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.)
An American Childhood was an eye opener for me and gave me pause to look back at my own childhood to see what I could see. I reread this periodically and enjoy the clarity with which Ms. Dillard writes about her memories of the start of life, the beginning of thought, the thrill of realizations when first made, and the excitement of knowing that life is ahead and it's up to the one who is living to get on with it. She sets up a scene and relates her feelings as she was living through it. A vivid memory for her is running with a friend through the backyards of her neighborhood chased by a man who was furious with them for thowing snowballs at his car. "It was an immense discovery, pounding into my hot head with every sliding, joyous step, that this ordinary adult evidently knew what I thought only children who trained at football knew: that you have to fling yourself at what you're doing, you have to point yourself, forget yourself, aim, dive." She seems to have learned lessons early that it takes many of us several decades to internalize.
One day she ran down a busy sidewalk, arms flailing, pretending to herself she might just be able to take off into flight. "I was too aware to do this, and had done it anyway. What could touch me now? For what were the people on Penn Avenue to me, or what was I to myself, really, but a witness to any boldness I could muster..."
Her use of language is unexpected and sparkling and her ability to listen to how others sound, most notably her parents, allows you to be there in the room with them all, listening too. She is able to capture a person's look with a few careful words. "Father snapped his fingers and wandered, tall and loose-limbed, over the house." And the chapter on learning to tell jokes is perfect at showing the private life of a single family - not to mention, it's just plain hilarious! "Our parents would sooner have left us out of Christmas than leave us out of a joke. They explained a joke to us while they were still laughing at it; they tore a still-kicking joke apart, so we could see how it worked...People who said, 'I can never remember jokes,' were like people who said, obliviously, 'I can never remember names,' or 'I don't bathe.'"
This book takes you to a specific place at a specific time, and also into the heart of childhood at any place or time. You read it and you can, for a while, throw off the sentimentalized vision of "youth" that you have drawn over the past, and instead remember how it actually was to grow up as a human being.

There's a glory in the mundane.

The furiously curious Annie Dillard! From her very earliest years she has a profound awareness of the mystery of life, nothing is without wonder, everything worthy of further scientific investigation. She HAS (she POSESSES) what Abraham Maslow called a "freshness of appreciation" meaning not only that nothing escapes her notice, but also that she tends to find some positive result out of all of her experiences. I find this to be an enviable trait.
The book, her childhood, takes place in Pittsburgh in the 1950's. She is afforded much freedom and affluence in her somewhat eccentric and hilarious family (her mother didn't like the taste of stamps, so she didn't lick stamps; she licked the corner of the envelope instead). Dillard wonderfully paints a picture of a world that is charged with wonder, and gives us a sense that this electrified world is not just hers, but also the world of the reader.
Her writing is best when describing her great love of nature. I could swear I HEARD the following sentence... "The waves disintegrated on the big beach; from the high cliff where our house stood, their breaking sounded like poured raw rice."
It's true that one has to be patient with Dillard's disconnected vignettes... there are diversions that seem to bust up the chronology of events, but overall, the book is great in that it makes the reader feel that perhaps they too have never lived an insignificant day.
She says: "...it is not you or I that is important, neither what sort we might be nor how we came to be each where we are. What is important is anyone's coming awake and discovering a place, finding in full orbit a spinning globe one can lean over, catch, and jump on. What is important is the moment of opening a life and feeling it touch - with an electric hiss and cry - this speckled mineral sphere, our present world."
She seems to be saying that there is a glory in the mundane.
