Born in 1866 the daughter of a Union civil war veteran, Susie Jones and her husband John struggled to prove up their homestead. At the same time Nathan McAlister, who grew up in Texas, brings his family to Oklahoma to file a homestead. Using pictures and letters from family records and other historical documents, the author brings the story alive with descriptive dialogue and personal details assumed by reading between the lines of historic accounts. The picture he paints of Oklahoma homesteading is of a gruesome existence for those pioneers who knew little about farming. Susie Jones, the feisty mother of four children is the main character throughout the story. She leaves the homestead where she and her family live in an eight by twelve hut with a dirt floor, to live in a small town where her children can gain a proper education and meet people. Susie trades her mule for a town lot and finds a way to build a house with a wooden floor. Susie lives to the ripe old age of 109 and when asked her secret to a long life she said, “prayer, a simple life, and don’t worry.” As her story reveals, she prayed often for better times. She certainly had a simple life and it was hard. Instead of worrying, she was usually prompted to action. She set a wonderful example for her dozens and dozens of living ancestors who migrated to other states such as Colorado, California, and Wyoming. Her story is a true lesson in history.

About the Author
William E Jones, PhD, was born in Stillwater Oklahoma. Both of his parents' families homesteaded in Oklahoma. His family moved to Colorado in 1936. Dr. Jones is author of a dozen books and numerous magazine articles.

Into and Out of Oklahoma

This nonfiction work is a detailed history of two families. The story begins at the close of the Civil War and continues until World War II. One of the families was from the North, the other from the South. In search of better lives, members of both families ultimately established homesteads in Western Oklahoma after that territory was opened up to settlement. That also is where their paths eventually crossed.
The story of these settlers and the difficulties they faced is presented in detail. Their challenges included poor soil for farming, drought, dust bowl conditions, and eventually the economic hardship brought on by the Great Depression. Ultimately both families moved out of Oklahoma and on to Colorado, and (in some cases) even further west to California.
Their story is presented in narrative form, accompanied by a rich variety of anecdotes, photos and documents. The author had access to these materials because he (like me) is a descendent of the two families. His father came from one of the families, his mother from the other. Many of the themes that emerge from this ambitious work are illustrative of more general characteristics of American life and culture. Not least of these are optimism, self-reliance, hard work, and a strong religious faith. Also clearly present was an ability to enjoy life even in extremely trying circumstances.

Reading takes on meaning when the written word evokes in the reader feelings of "having been there." For those of us who lived through the Great Depression and the tumultuous years that followed, OUT OF OKLAHOMA is such a story as it happened to those who lived it.
Dr. Jones was fortunated to have in his possession letters, diaries, pictures and first-hand accounts from several generations of family members. Those he skillfully wove together to portray the history of both his paternal and maternal families, including the most intimate accounts of trials, triumphs, joys, sorrows, and life in general. The saga is one that can be well understood on an emotional basis by all who lived during the unfolding history of the 20th Century, as well as the unfolding progression of each life written about. It is like watching it all take place before you as you read it.
The magic of America is displayed in the way those he wrote about were a part of the westward movement into Kansas and Oklahoma, Colorado and California, and how they met the challenges of the Depression years, WW II, and all that followed. It tells how the descendants of the original families continue to display the ability to dream, as did their ancestors, and to become the success stories of the family members of today.
A truly enjoyable and worthwhile read!

This is a great book ! Full of history information about Oklahoma and about my ancestors, the Jones family.
Bill has done a fantastic job of linking history with great story telling.
