About the Author
Frantisek Korbel is a Zend Certified Engineer and his work includes programming, video editing and web design. In 2004 he created a First Aid Basics freeware using Macromedia Flash and since then he often works with animations and video. Using Adobe AIR in 2009 he developed a Learning Periodic Table of chemical elements. Big part of his activities is devoted to the volunteering, mainly for educational and community projects in developing countries (Africa – nkolfoulou.org, oyoko.org), India (kidedu.org), etc. He participates in various projects by UN Volunteering and on WaterWiki.net website design coordinated by United Nations Development Programme. For this book he created a supporting website ffmpeg.tv.

Great Book!

In general, this is a very detailed description of the use of ffmpeg, accompanied by many examples, charts and diagrams.
I found this book an easy read and I am actively using it as a reference for ffmpeg capabilities.
chapter 1) style is a walk thru tutorial. nice description of ffmpeg and related tools, executables and underlying libraries.
Author also mentions the various key developers of ffmpeg and their particular expertise;
I thought this background added to intro chapter nicely.
Another nice touch is mentioning environment settings and alternative cmd prompt programs that can be used in place of the basic 'DOS' prompt.
The author then dives into command line use of the ffmpeg tool in regards to output formatting,transcoding basics and the various media streams.
chapter 2 continues the introduction theme and describes the help and features of ffmpeg.
This is a fairly indepth overview of help syntax and usage of the help syntax;
There is a complete list of the video and audio codecs, filters and formats and a very nice caterogization of each;
Command line usage is discussed, offering tips for controling the output with utlities such as the 'more' cmd and output redirection.
Chapter 3 starts to get into the meat of video and audio handling. in regards to frame rate, a good description is
given of frame rates for the most popular standards, followed by examples of frame rate handling from the ffmpeg command line.
chapter 4 thru 10 go into resizing, scaling, cropping, padding, overlays and adding text to video, going into details of algorithms such as the nyquist
sampling algorythm. The author has a good knack of expressing the details in understandable terms, usually ending with ffmpeg command line examples.
chapter 11 is where the most common usage of ffmpeg is discussed; conversions between formats. Multi-colored charts and tables present the vast collection of containers (formats) and codecs. Discussion of the most popular codecs are given including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AC-3 audio, etc.
Chapter 12 thru 14 discuss other features such as time operations, math and metadata. The basics of starting and stopping streams servers as a good starting point for stream manipulation.
Image Processing is delved into in Chapter 15. Ffmpeg offers tools for creating images, conversion of video frames to image files (.bmp, png, etc.); for instance, a specific frame number can be targeted for conversion to any of the support image formats. These images can then be padded, cropped etc. The usual ample number of ffmpeg
command line examples are used to illustrate the purpose of these ffmpeg tools.
If Audio is your thing, Chapter 16 addressed the basics of audio, as well as ffmpeg tools for processing audio.
Chapter 17, 'Preset for Codecs' addresses the packaging of the many options for a particular codec.
The remaining chapters discuss Interlaced video, a discussion of FFMpeg libraries and the interesting integration with the host computer's
webcam, microphone and speaker system.
All in all, a great book bursting with many examples, charts and sample output. A must book for anybody interested in the FFMpeg tool.

Excellent book!

I bought the pdf version of the book (on the official website), and though I haven't read it all, I know that this book is currently the best guide/book on learning ffmpeg. The author does a really good job in keeping things organized and using plain English to describe how to use ffmpeg.
The only thing I wish there was more of was more examples or "projects" to reinforce the material learned, but this can easily be done by testing out the material on your own with the examples already provided.
Overall, I enjoy reading this book and think that anyone wanting to learn ffmpeg should start with this book.

Must have for beginners

If you compress a lot of video, sooner or later you're going to have to get familiar with FFmpeg. This book does a great job organizing the information in a very extensive table of contents (though there is no index), and provides simple command line arguments for all configuration options that you can easily integrate into your own encodings.
Sure, all the information is on the Internet, but for $20 this book will save you a bunch of time and provide much better answers.
