Great book!

We're very particular about our child's spiritual education. This book is excellent to teach preschoolers a straightforward synopsis of the Bible's Easter story and its significance. It's written on a child's level, but doesn't get caught up in cutesy stuff that would detract from the gravity of the story. It even includes scenes not usually covered in children's books, like Palm Sunday, washing the disciples' feet, praying in the garden, and appearing to the disciples after resurrection. I love that it 1. teaches who Jesus is and what he did, 2. pairs nicely with sermons/lessons leading up to and after Easter, 3. doesn't shy away from talk of death, but isn't scary, 4. devotes several pages to the resurrection and new life (that is the point, after all).
I'll be looking for more from this publisher. I'd love suggestions for similar books.

Perfect Introduction to the Easter Story for Toddlers

I wanted an Easter story to read to my 18 month old son that wasn't overly complicated or frightening, and this book fits the bill. It's got very pretty, colorful illustrations and sturdy board book pages, so there is no worry about his ripping or damaging it. The story is simple, as it should be for such a young child, and when discussing the crucifixion you just see three crosses in shadow in the background. It was a great way to introduce the Easter story to my son in words he kind of understands and to at least make him realize there is more to Easter than just egg hunts and the Easter bunny. This has been put away on his book shelf for now, but I'm looking forward to bring it back out around Easter of 2017, when he'll be about 2.5 and able to understand a bit more of the story.

Great Summary of the Real Meaning of Easter, But For Younger Kids

I teach second grade at a Lutheran school and I got this book so I could use it as part of my lesson about Easter, but now that my daughter is 3, I plan on reading it with her this upcoming Easter so that I can explain what Easter is really about, not just the Easter bunny, chocolates, and Easter baskets. I love that the author keeps the text short on each page and quickly summarizes the Easter story in a way that is understandable to children and is suitable for their attention spans. It touches on some miracles Jesus did, how he chose his disciples, that some people didn't want to hear about God, the events of Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, Jesus' arrest, and crucifixion. I like that it states Jesus was sent to die, but doesn't get into gory detail that would be frightening to children or graphic. It explains how Jesus rose on the third day and that who believes in Him has eternal life. Understand that it's a quick summary and is more intended for children 3-7 years old, so older children would probably like more detail than what is given here.

The illustrations are beautifully done in what looks like watercolor and have a lot of details in them. I highly recommend this book for parents to explain the real meaning of Easter in a summarized, kid friendly way to young children!

Awesome. I couldn't find some of the information I needed from my other a&p book, marieb 9e, and this one had everything I needed. I like the graphics in this book & find them to be very helpful. I couldn't figure out what phagocytes were involved in the innate immunity & this book has a graphic that organized everything so I wasn't just assuming. I also like the histology graphics, there's an animated photo & an actual photo pictomicrograph for most tissues. I ordered this book after we did the cardiac chapter, but I think the graphics are far better than in the marieb book. I was struggling to try and match the mechanical & electrical cardiac events & this book shows it in a graphic, which would have been very helpful. Wish I would have ordered this book in the beginning of the semester. I first came across this book on their website (it's available for free as a pdf) & I kept printing off pages. I figured I'd rather just buy the book than have a bunch of loose pages all over the place. I looked on amazon to see if it was available in a printed edition & it was. Thanks to this book I passed my a&p 1 final with a B. I've attached pictures of some of the graphics I found to be very useful.

The picture he paints of Oklahoma homesteading is of a gruesome existence for those pioneers who knew little about farming. Susie Jones, the feisty mother of four children is the main character throughout the story. She leaves the homestead where she and her family live in an eight by twelve hut with a dirt floor, to live in a small town where her children can gain a proper education and meet people. Susie trades her mule for a town lot and finds a way to build a house with a wooden floor. Susie lives to the ripe old age of 109 and when asked her secret to a long life she said, “prayer, a simple life, and don’t worry.” As her story reveals, she prayed often for better times. She certainly had a simple life and it was hard. Instead of worrying, she was usually prompted to action. She set a wonderful example for her dozens and dozens of living ancestors who migrated to other states such as Colorado, California, and Wyoming. Her story is a true lesson in history.

William E Jones, PhD, was born in Stillwater Oklahoma. Both of his parents' families homesteaded in Oklahoma. His family moved to Colorado in 1936. Dr. Jones is author of a dozen books and numerous magazine articles.

Into and Out of Oklahoma

This nonfiction work is a detailed history of two families. The story begins at the close of the Civil War and continues until World War II. One of the families was from the North, the other from the South. In search of better lives, members of both families ultimately established homesteads in Western Oklahoma after that territory was opened up to settlement. That also is where their paths eventually crossed.

The story of these settlers and the difficulties they faced is presented in detail. Their challenges included poor soil for farming, drought, dust bowl conditions, and eventually the economic hardship brought on by the Great Depression. Ultimately both families moved out of Oklahoma and on to Colorado, and (in some cases) even further west to California.

Their story is presented in narrative form, accompanied by a rich variety of anecdotes, photos and documents. The author had access to these materials because he (like me) is a descendent of the two families. His father came from one of the families, his mother from the other. Many of the themes that emerge from this ambitious work are illustrative of more general characteristics of American life and culture. Not least of these are optimism, self-reliance, hard work, and a strong religious faith. Also clearly present was an ability to enjoy life even in extremely trying circumstances.

Reading takes on meaning when the written word evokes in the reader feelings of "having been there." For those of us who lived through the Great Depression and the tumultuous years that followed, OUT OF OKLAHOMA is such a story as it happened to those who lived it.

Dr. Jones was fortunated to have in his possession letters, diaries, pictures and first-hand accounts from several generations of family members. Those he skillfully wove together to portray the history of both his paternal and maternal families, including the most intimate accounts of trials, triumphs, joys, sorrows, and life in general. The saga is one that can be well understood on an emotional basis by all who lived during the unfolding history of the 20th Century, as well as the unfolding progression of each life written about. It is like watching it all take place before you as you read it.

The magic of America is displayed in the way those he wrote about were a part of the westward movement into Kansas and Oklahoma, Colorado and California, and how they met the challenges of the Depression years, WW II, and all that followed. It tells how the descendants of the original families continue to display the ability to dream, as did their ancestors, and to become the success stories of the family members of today.

A truly enjoyable and worthwhile read!

About the Author
Alireza Bahadori, Ph.D., is a research staff member in the School of Environment, Science and Engineering at Southern Cross University, Lismore, NSW, Australia. He received his Ph.D. from Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia.During the past twenty years, Dr. Bahadori has held various process and petroleum engineering positions and was involved in many large-scale projects at National Iranian Oil Co. (NIOC), Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), and Clough AMEC PTY LTD. He is the author of 250 articles and 14 books. His books have been published by multiple major publishers, including Elsevier. He has served on the editorial board of a number of journals and is a member of Engineers Australia.

Dr. Bahadori is the recipient of the highly competitive and prestigious Australian Government's Endeavor International Postgraduate Research Award as part of his research in oil and gas area. He also received a Top-Up Award from the State Government of Western Australia through Western Australia Energy Research Alliance (WA:ERA) in 2009. Dr. Bahadori serves as a member of the editorial board and reviewer for a large number of journals. He was honored by Elsevier to be an outstanding author of the Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering in 2009.He is member of Institution of Engineers Australia and a chartered engineer (CEng) member of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE,) London, UK.
